    Police and Villains are two teams cheerfully playing a game they understand well and have played for a long time. They respect each other’s tactics and know the rules inside out. The public however, especially victims, are an unwelcome intrusion into their game, a disruptive annoyance.

    • @JamesandRibble
      @JamesandRibble 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@ReturnOfWilderness I think my logic has escaped you. Living in a better house gives you greater amenity, it's warmer, there is more space, it's a more pleasant place to live. These things can be objectively measured and subjectively felt. A £3,000 Tudor, when measured for its actual function, i.e. telling you what time of day it is, is every bit as capable as a £50,000 AP. You may prefer the look of the AP, and you may like the thoughts about what it says about you as a person (successful with good taste etc), but this is entirely subjective. Other people may quite legitimately think the Tudor scores better on both points. Anyway, that's my opinion, I just don't accept the house analogy.

    • @JamesandRibble
      @JamesandRibble 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thinking about it, you are correct to an extent of course. Otherwise I would wear a Casio F-91 which I don't. However I do acknowledge that my watches, although costing considerably more than the Casio, don't do any better job of actually telling the time than the Casio. I guess it's all a question of degree. If you are wandering around London wearing a Rolex Sub, you just have to be aware that it makes you a target, sad though that is.

    • @bobby9741
      @bobby9741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Think we need to remember the primary reason most people buy expensive watches, is to flash. Not all, but the majority of Rolex owners for example. If posing is the objective then you have no option and you take the risk of being mugged. If you're interested in and appreciate nice watches, you can get really great ones from brands no one has heard of to wear when you go somewhere where you might get targeted.
      I've got a GTM Master ii and an Explorer, and I won't wear them if I'm going somewhere, where I might be at risk. It's just not worth it and personally I think a Casio looks way cooler these days!

It was also a brave act to share this, further putting you in the police crosshairs, or perhaps the path of their aimed baton in the UK. Thank you for sharing this. I have traveled to many countries of varying degrees of civility, but now realize the precautions that need to be made before and during a visit to the UK. It is basically the same for a country like Morocco. Not third world, but not exactly a place to wear a gold wedding ring. This isn't meant to talk down on the UK in general or its people, only the criminal aspect and selective enforcement of law. God be with you Mr. Thorpe. It is very possible your message will save a few from a similar fate, if only to avoid the locale and better prepare themselves when going out in the UK.

    Moving story and really hope things have stabilized and you are more at ease with life. A long time ago I was friends with David Duggan ( now a very well established watch dealer) and he often travelled from his home in Lytham down to London and the Police informed him that they had viable evidence that he would be attacked & robbed whilst on one of these journeys but they were not sure where or when he would be done. Thankfully the police got the gang before they got to David but it stuck in my mind how much it troubled him prior to the arrests. Anyway good luck with whatever you are doing now.

    Such powerful, moving and maddening stories. I am glad you have your life yet feel for you deeply for having gone through so much. The stress of not knowing if you were going to be charged must have been like absolute torture. I try to train myself to give up a watch I am wearing but even though they are insured, there remains a chance if I don't guage the robber or robbers correctly and think I can defend myself or escape, I worry I might have a sad end. As a result of stories like yours and so many more in my big city, I rotate my collection more often and wear lower key models whenever i feel it's higher risk. That being said, since I won't stop wearing high end watches, a robbery can happen most anywhere. Sorry for your loss of feelings of any pride. Truth is you are stronger than ever and gained insight into your own strength, which is side by side in realizing how vulnerable we all actually are. God bless.

    Having watched your videos and listened to your experiences I no longer want one.
    It seems, that simply by wearing a nice watch makes me a target, together with the way Rolex behave as a company, I want nothing to do with any of that.

    This is so emotional, Paul. Is there any other avenue that you could take legally. To gain access to CCTV cameras as a victim and use private Investigators or your self and put infront of the courts? Or does it always mean that every criminal event has to be investigated by the Police at their whim ?

Sorry that you have had to give you job and passion up for it but I can also understand why . This could be a film it’s just so unreal ,keep strong

    And here’s the thing. One can accept the notion that the Police may not have the resources or budget to pursue every crime. But surely as criminals are allowed to walk free and continue to commit crimes unchecked, whatever resources and budget is available is under even more pressure. Absolutely astonished how short sighted the met are.

    I am sorry to say I have had similar treatment at the hands of the Police. The first time was a great shock and I began to wake up. The second time I knew. Whilst I am sure there are good Police Officers out there, the institution is ruined, just like the NHS and other once highly respected institutions. The England of my youth is gone. The World perception of England is no more.

    Hi, Paul, We live in Scotland and have just watched your video this morning and it reminded me of the day a guy I worked beside was at a night out in Glasgow, and was walking back to his hotel along Sauchiehall Street. He was approached by 2 guys who demanded he hand over his watch. As he stepped back, they stepped forward grabbed his arm and one guy tried to get behind him. Unfortunately for them, he gave both guys a good pasting as he was a martial arts expert. He phoned the police and an ambulance and HE was arrested and spent the night answering questions until they retrieved the cctv which confirmed his story (thankfully) as they said that they were attacked. They also said they got what they deserved and charged them. We found your video very upsetting and disturbing and as a watch lover we’ve sold our expensive watches as it’s getting to be a pandemic in this country. We agree with your thoughts and follow your new vlogs with interest as we have a 🤡 as an FM but hopefully that will all change. I’ve even got to be careful what I say as I don’t want a chap at my door and the thought police turn up. We watch Craig Houston on you tube (a funny activist) who gives a funny factual 10 minute moan about how incompetent the snp are. Worth watching. Take care Paul and all the best to your family. 👍

    When you have to plead with the police to examine the evidence from a violent robbery and they say "we can't cos it costs 500 quid" ....... I'm lost for words. It seems the moral of this series is, if someone violently robs your watch then your own your own. If you defend yourself and try and stop being robbed, then your looking at being arrested yourself..... Thank you Paul. Iv found this 3 video series fascinating and very eye opening. I applaud your courage

    I have watched Paul’s robbery videos here in Canada and I am shocked at the UK’s lack of police follow up in these matters. Here in Canada we have adopted British common law. The police and courts here are modelled after the several hundred year old British system. This destroys my view of the UK as a civilized first world society based on rule of law. I have never heard of such police disinterest in a violent crime here in Canada. As a citizen I have a direct and personal connection with my MP and I thought such avenues are open to you in the UK as well. We also have police ombudsman services, and the Provincial Justice Minister. I would be camping out on their doorsteps to get action if I was Paul. I am sad for Paul, and I am sad for the UK.

    Paul its a shame we have people like this in society, When I was 18 I got set up by two old 'friends' and jumped and robbed by 6-7 guys just for a phone...its pathetic.
    Anyone can get these things, with a low paying job, finance and patience...but they resort to these acts.
