Ajahn Brahm muses about a famous old saying coined by Thomas Gray: ignorance is bliss. Ajahn also looks at whether running away and ignoring the world brings peace and happy.
"just put a banana in your ear. (a banana in my ear?) put a ripe banana right into your favorite ear. its true (says you) so true. once its in your gloom will dissapear, the bad of the world is hard to hear, when in your ear a banana cheers. so go and put a banana in your ear"
Re-phrase; "Laying it on thick" is not praising, it's giving the person in question a false sense of confidence. In the long run it just holds off any genuine healing.
@Shadowmib haha I didn't know about that before. Very clever, but funny as long as they have not ironed out the bugs yet. ....next Tuesday I go to Singapore ...next Tuesday cursing the poor ....you have to actually praise for a full 15 seconds only after 15 seconds does the praise get received ...You have to pray the full 15 seconds only after 15 seconds mister pratt is getting to see it ...I admire your spirituality and your kindness ...of my spirituality in your prime minister
Ignoranace may be bliss but stupidity is another root to evil. When you praise someone for doing the right thing you don't "lay it on thick" they just might smell the insincerity and you end up wondering why the person is so "hard to reach".
Ajahn Brahm taught before that we should do our best to not allow ignorance result in negligence because it results in unskillful kamma right? I understand in meditation we can let all go and be grateful for what we find there, but during every day matters, how do we not let knowledge get in the way of truth if wisdom is not the method of doing things in most business? How do we have truth in sales for example when we can't be sure if a salesman has your best interest in mind or his commission?
If someone tells you they are thinking of killing other people, don't tell them very good, you had better report that person to the police. Otherwise you could be charged with being an accessory to the crime for having knowledge of it.
One comment, I don't appreciate the way Ajahn talked about Catholic nuns' clothing in this video, nor the slams he makes on Catholics from time to time, we get enough of that from the fundamentalist Christians. I am Catholic, I know my religion has faults, but I'm disappointed to hear these comments from Ajahn Brahm. It doesn't matter if he's friends with Catholic monks, Catholic monks wouldn't even make such comments about Buddhists. Nuns are at the bottom of the hierarchy and have it hard.
gigicats6 , in many of his other talks he would teach people about relaxing, being cheerful and taking things lightly.... Those talks might help you on this matter.
Ajahn Brahm, please keep that peaceful way of speaking. It is very therapeutic.
AB .... you’re so right. I do this “trying to leave the world” thing with my friends. But the world does follow you. They won’t leave me alone.

If you want a good laugh, turn on the "transcribe" feature. It gets about 25% of the words right, and translates the rest with some real random words.
Thank you.
Good talk

It's probably a glitch with your browser. Try watching it with a different browser (Chrome, Opera) and see if that helps.
