  • In the premiere episode of Being in the Way - an Alan Watts podcast - Mark Watts and Raghu introduce a dharma talk on Taoism, the interdependence of nature, and dropping out of karma.
This series is brought to you by the Alan Watts Organization and Ram Dass’ Love Serve Remember Foundation. Visit Alanwatts.org for full talks from Alan Watts.
Discussion with Mark Watts & Raghu Markus (0:00)
Eastern Philosophy: Taoism & Confucianism (10:40)
Mutual Arising: Polarity, Nature, & Interdependence (24:32)
Dropping Out From Karma: The Way Through Now (33:16)
"The world is a system of interrelated components, none of which can survive without each other. Just as in the case of bees and flowers, you will never find bees around in place where there aren't flowers, and you will never find flowers around in a place where there aren't bees. What that tells us secretly, is that although bees and flowers look different from each other, they're inseparable. To use an important Taoist expression: they arise mutually." - Alan Watts

This happened to me this year.
I had gotten pretty bad with day drinking and had basically given up trying to stop.
Started taking small doses of mushrooms in the morning, for a fun experiment at first, but it quickly blew up into a glimpse of awakening.
Stopped habitual drinking in one day, an instant I guess.
Set off on a path to inner peace and outward love, the complete opposite as to how is been living for my entire adult life.

Listening to Alan Watts has transformed my perspective and overall perception of life.
The final quote is simple yet profound.
    59:26
“To the naive man, mountains are mountains and waters are waters.
To the intermediate student, mountains are no longer mountains and waters are no longer waters. In other words they’ve all dissolved into the point of kashana.
But for the fully perfected student, mountains are again mountains and waters are again waters.”
They are being, they are here, they are NOW.

So true that in your early years of life you push and move yourself through a maze of some kind of success. Then there comes the time when Taoism works it’s peace into your life and is the salve to the bruises you acquire getting to that beautiful time of your life.

Ah, my dear interlocutor, you have stumbled upon the cosmic dance floor of existence, where the humorous melodies of life twirl and tango with the absurdity of it all. So, let us embark on a whimsical journey into the realms of existential hilarity.
Imagine, if you will, a cosmic jester with a twinkle in his eye, merrily skipping through the ethereal dimensions. He whispers secrets to the stars, chuckling at the seriousness with which we humans ponder our purpose. With a mischievous grin, he asks, "What is the meaning of life?" and promptly bursts into laughter.
You see, my friend, life is the ultimate cosmic prank, a never-ending game of hide-and-seek. We chase after meaning like a dog chases its tail, only to discover that it was within us all along, wagging with laughter. We strive for success, fame, and fortune, thinking they hold the key to happiness, only to realize that happiness dances in the simplest moments-a good cup of tea, a belly laugh, or the sheer absurdity of existence itself.
But do not fret, for in this cosmic circus, we are all clowns in the grandest of shows. We put on masks and costumes, playing our parts with gusto, unaware that the audience is also part of the spectacle. We chase after goals and achievements, desperately clinging to the illusion of control, while the universe chuckles, knowing that the punchline is in the impermanence of it all.
So, my dear seeker of wisdom, if you find yourself pondering the meaning of life, take a step back and join the cosmic laughter. Embrace the delightful uncertainty, dance with the absurdity, and remember that the joke is on all of us. Life is not a riddle to be solved but a cosmic comedy to be enjoyed, so let us have a good laugh and savor every moment, for the punchline is always in the here and now.

Our emotions are triggered when our desires are not met or satisfied. Intellectuals avoid social gatherings due to fear of being out of control. Meditation has its limitations; enlightenment is possible when our mind is awake, its desire is to understand the causes of our emotions. Freedom from hate and anger is possible when we understand them. The teachings of Spinoza’s and Gurdjieff’s will help develop a deeper meaning to your life.

Hey Mark, and All! Something interesting a few months back, I had a dream that your dad came to me in a dream and essentially said the following “Don’t try to look for a difference between you and brass, seek what you have in common and that’s what it is(the secret).” I’m not confident it wasn’t purely my conception of him or his soul essence, I think it doesn’t matter too much anyways. And not sure why brass was the example given but I know brass has important meanings to certain people but anyone feel free to give suggestions. Either way I think it’s obvious what he’s getting at but thought it was kind of a cool encounter if you can call it one. I figured might as well share it Incase it could have any significance to anyone else too

Another thing I wrote one time is “I am followed in here, I am fellowed in here, but Out There no self disguise is necessary.” The “skin” as you said is the bubble wrap of illusion that keeps us separated. An image I like of psychedelic trips or very awakened states of mind is, take us as a solid and upright, but in those states, we become liquid. When around others, if they both melt, they will be one continuous puddle on the floor. No separation to be seen(not that there ever was anyways)

Mature way is..I have nothing to teach you! You learn from your own experience!

Wisdom is...knowing you have nothing to teach.
Confucianism is..do you naturally and you will be nature.

If you'd just cut off or remove the foreword of you two and let the great philosopher speak of his insights to us. Your voices are irritating and sound like a bromazepam effect kind of an audio sample clip. Leave the scene for good order' sake and look for your directions elsewhere. You have already contributed a great deal by posting a part of his marvelous speech. Thanks and don't take it personal.

What a great thing that we do not have to hear your irritating voice. Just type or write down everything you do and don't talk at all.

Dao or Tao as another word for Brahman...Chi as another word for Shakti...never mind....as there is no God in Absolute as there is nothing to create there....A U M.... Absolute Universal Mind...A U M ..

To go to college and live an alternative lifestyle requires being born into the middle class and higher . And ever since President Ronald Reagan and the dominance of the so called free market system , even those born into the middle class cannot afford the outrageous artificial high cost of university education

Hilarious to see these wise men speak of God yet always based on the religions and teaching of men and not in Holiness as it is written in spirit and in truth
This is why it is written The wisdom of men is but foolishness Yes very smart everything when speaking of the world and it’s flesh and how we shouldn’t be but when speaking of God the man always returns to the bases of flesh doctrines Christianity Islam Bushism Etc Note Not one those religions is of God nor does it provide the info written in spirit in Holy Scripture Not one is holy or of God

Alan's charisma and word smithery definitely didn't pass down in the genes. At least though he focuses mostly on Alan or the topic at hand.
The other guy definitely wants to come across as an expert and show off his own benign thoughts as profound ones.
