    We rescued a dwarf miniature horse, he was bred during the mini horse show era. He wasn't expected to live and he just celebrated being 30! Our little Toady!

    The size of those teeth compared to Koda's skulls was mindblowing! I've never seen the full extent of a horse tooth before and I had no idea they were that long!

    • @BattleBladeWarrior
      @BattleBladeWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yea that was damn nuts! now I'm curious how often that actually occurs, too. I imagine shetland ponies probably are descendants of of horses with birth defects (I.E, dwarfism) so I wonder how many other issues, on average, these little horses have?
      Like, is this a common occorance? I hope not. . .
      They're so cute!

    • @BattleBladeWarrior
      @BattleBladeWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@CalmoOmlac Oh ok, that makes sense. And yea, thats what I was thinking of, was dogs. Because some were bred for a certain look (I.E, pugs & bulldogs) but because of that, a lot of dogs in that breed have breathing and respiratory problems.
      And that seems to be a running theme, with animals specifically bred for certain traits, theres quite often a tradeoff, as you mention.

    • @rosehawke2577
      @rosehawke2577 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BattleBladeWarrior As far as I know (someone correct me if I'm wrong,) Shetlands weren't originally *specifically* bred to be small, but more the result of a "survival of the fittest" and best horse for the job kind of thing in the Shetland islands. It's when you start breeding for size - runts to runts or dwarfs that the problems start. Presumably the breed is over 2000 years old.

      One has no perspective of the size of teeth in general. When they took my wisdom teeth out, I could breed trough the hole of one of them that was all the way up to the sinuses it was crazy

I have taken care of 3 dwarf people, and have found their strength, resilience and just plain stubbornness to bend to 'normal ' attitudes, and expectations. The youngest was 7 yrs and the oldest was in his fifties, and they were about the same size. But oh boy, don't think size matters, they both wanted to be just treated normal, just with some health problems. This horse has the same IDGAF attitude he will do as much as he can, as long as he can. Thank you to all the vets that help him do so.❤💕💙

    My horse Big Red went through something like this, but colic, which was a death sentence for a horse like him and that was almost 17 years ago.. my family was incredibly kind and thankfully able to financially provide this care. But if it had progressed beyond the surgeries he had, we would have been in a dark place and a life would’ve been lost that could’ve been saved. Dr Chris is a pioneer and a godsend. I was the age of those children and my horse/baby got to live because of medicine like this. Please continue this work, it changes more lives than you know.
