I went through this section a few weeks ago now. I spent the night at Big Bear. I left before sunrise in the morning and hiked in the dark and thick fog. There were a couple of points where I had trouble figuring out which direction the trail went. I had been through there once before, but the last time I was in the summer and the morning light started earlier.
I just picked up a hammock kit. I've only spent one night in it so far. There is a definite learning curve, but I'm enjoying it. I have Hwy 7 to Pinnacle to finish the OT and I hope to use my hammock for those last sections.

Yeah, I got misdirected several times. There's just too many little roads in this section. Good luck with the hammock system! They take more fiddling than tents but are sure comfortable.

Scooter was the trail maintainer’s cat. The whole section from Hwy 298 to Hwy 7 was the first portion of the OT built by the Forest Service. You noticed how the trail was dug out of those rocks.
