Often when I go backpacking, I have to stop somewhere overnight along the way to the trailhead. I don't want to hassle with setting up and tearing down camp when I just want to get to the destination. On previous trips I've found that sleeping in the cab is just too uncomfortable. Most of the videos I've seen on truck conversions involve full toppers but mine has a Tonneau cover which is a flat...

    I knew this area in the mid 1990's ....Hummingbird Saddle was one of my favorite places to rest and let the beauty sink in....I have looked for videos of that area since the catastrophic fire which burned over 200k acres of forest in the Gila Wilderness. The Crest Trail was a favorite .....so sad. I see now in your video what it looks like now.....figured it would be bad....Sad. Thank you for showing this area....I got the feeling no one wanted to hike here anymore...or the forest service didn't want anyone seeing what the fire had done....

      Despite the fire, this was a favorite hike of mine. I can't wait to get back there sometime. Old burn areas are sombre to walk through but there's always so much life recovering, and so quickly. It's magical.

    • @garagebrewer
      @garagebrewer 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It was particularly dry when I did this video. In the spring, when it rains, there are little streams that run. You can always get water on this trail though. The first part of the trail follows the lake and you might have to bushwhack your way to it. The second half of the trail follows the river. There are a few places where the trail meets the river. The map at the trailheads is a very good guide. I'd say you can always get water at mile markers 1-3 (lake), 6 with some bushwhacking, 10 (usually a stream or pool), 11 (river), 12.5-13.5 (river), 14.5 (river). You can also cache water at 3.5 and 9.5, maybe at 12.5 or 7.5 if you have an off-road vehicle.

    9:00 That section near the sign is confusing because I think they tried to reroute the trail down that drainage. When you come to it from the opposite direction, you're more likely to come up from that direction because that's the path you see. Going the way you came from, you more clearly see the upper path. It's a only a difference of a few feet before they converge again. And the only way I know about them both is because I came the other direction on a day hike with my wife.

    4:00 When there has been more rain and that pond is full, there is a spring just on the other side of the trail below the pond (pond is on the right side of the trail and higher up, spring is on the left, just down hill from the pond). I've had decent flowing water from that spring. But the last time I went through Flatside, I got water from where I suspect you got it, but that flowing set of cascades and pools of water (6:28). Do you happen to know, is that the area Tim Ernst refers to as Moccasin Springs? Also, both times I have passed through that area, I have missed the place where the trail turns to go up hill out of that valley. There is a campsite next to the creek, and the trail looks like it continues straight, but it goes left up the hill. I've had to backtrack after I realized the trail petered out. Maybe it's just me. Haha. 8:07 Crystal Prong is a funky crossing, but when the water is high, it's scary. Those angled rocks get super slick when they're wet, and that water gets rushing when the rocks are mostly covered.

Now that I have completed it, I watch because I like seeing the locations I visited at other times of the year and in other weather conditions (it's amazing how different the trail can be from one time to another), I enjoy seeing and hearing other people's reactions to those sites and challenges, and I also enjoy hearing people problem solve and make decisions. A lot of trails have these. I think they're designed to keep cattle on one side of the fence but humans can walk right over. I don't think I've ever seen one of this design though.

    Really enjoying your insight to this section of trail. I set out March 5 to through hike the whole thing...

      Thanks for watching. I think this whole section (hwy 27 to hwy 7) has been my favorite so far. I thought it would just be more of the same but there were just so many marked vistas in this 3 day hike. It also seemed like one of the better maintained sections. I hope you have a great hike!

    I went through that area in early December of last year. Fidler Creek shelter is a super nice shelter. We just stopped for lunch there, but it was a nice spot for sure. Wasps were not there when we came through. haha.

      The three seasons for backpacking in Arkansas are winter, spring, and fall. Deep summer is brutal and August is the worst of it. Not only the heat and humidity, but everything is overgrown and all the bugs are out.

    I guess squeeze filters are too heavy for you? 🙂 Nice video. I'll be doing this section soon, so it's good to see a current video.

      Actually my squeeze filter failed me on my Elk River video. I do prefer them but knew I was going to be sub-freezing overnight and didn't want to have to worry about keeping my filter warm.
