Dendrobium loddigesii blooms and how I grow it

  • My Dendrobium loddigesii produced 14 blooms this year :)...
    I give it a cold dry winter rest from end of October - beginning of November until I see the buds starting to appear - usually beginning of March. When resting it gets no fertilizer and very little watering, just a few times during all rest. When growing - it gets plenty of water and food and warm humid environment too...

    Absolutely stunning! Orchideya. I love your plant! It has done so well. I am very impressed. Wish I could send you mine so you could rehabilitate it. Just love those blooms. Color frills and all. Congratulations!

      Thank you Beverly! Lol, I am sure you will figure out yours, you are so good at growing orchids and hoyas. I honestly didn't expect to get so many flowers, I like this plant a lot. I wish they were long lasting, my tank looks awesome now with all those blooms inside :)

    Those blooms are absolutely adorable. The best blooming I have seen this year 👏👌 I dream of blooming like that on my Dendrobium. My plant needs to grow more, I hope it will this season, now that I have placed it in a pot where it can get better hydrated. Mounts are not good for me, they dry up too fast in spite of being watered by immersion every day. And I can see you have a wonderful plant too, you are giving it enough humidity during the summer and that makes all the differance. Congratulations 😄

      Thank you so much Fernanda! Yes, I think it likes high humidity and warmth while growing. I hope yours grows nice canes this summer and gives you lots of blooms next year.

    Wow that is awesome! Love that frilly lip and the shade of pink is almost Fluorescent! I think that plant quadrupled in size! The funny part is it doesn't even look like it got a dry rest. Just incredible. I guess it needs a very pronounced hot to cold period. Watering in winter is like any other nobile. Don't let the canes shrivel.
    I can only imagine what this orchid was thinking in its hibernation on the edge of the window, watching you pamper the vandas. I'm sure it wanted to prove it was worth its keep.
    Congrats, stunning display and well done!

      Thank you! I am glad you like it, it seems to grow really well, it started few new canes already. Lol, my vandas were really pampered , but they are such ungrateful plants, not even thinking to spike...

      The loddigesii took no time to adapt. Why can't all our orchids behave like that?
      As for the vandas, I got spoiled initially with Pine Rivers, Pachara Delight, Mikasa, and even Rapeepath. I should not have ordered more just because the others bloomed. Especially in my settings where they will sleep 6 months of the year.

    Gosh! You've done really well with that one. Mine grows quite well and produces buds but about half of them abort every year. It gets a dry rest but perhaps not long or cool enough.

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I hope you figure it out. Can it be too low humidity while buds are developing? I usually move it inside humid tank when I start seeing buds without my reading glasses

      Thank you Todd! Mine has roots all over the place and I was thinking that it might benefit from larger mount but am afraid to disturb it, I might just attach this mount to larger piece of bark without moving the plant...

      Thank you Margaret! I hope yours will do better for you this year, I am lucky to have my glass tank, I think it provides good , warm and humid conditions while the plant is growing and having cold winters helps to achieve the cold rest.

    I just purchased one of these beauties. I heard it is a cool-cold grower. What temp. Do you keep yours at? Yours is the most beautiful one I’ve seen! Stunning! Mine is just small and it suffered in transit. Lost all it’s leaves but the canes are still green. I hope it makes it. I’d love to grow mine into one like yours!

    • @Orchideya
      @Orchideya  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I keep mine cold and dry during winter rest period but warm and humid during growth period. Starting around November I place mine on the windowsill close to the glass, during winter it will be around +14C there and water once a month only with no fertilizer. It looses some leaves, so I basically water just to keep the canes from shriveling. Then around February it starts to create buds and I move it inside the, tank temps between +25C and +27C, humidity 85-90%. It blooms there and grows new canes. Loosing leaves is ok, this species is deciduous. Good luck! If the canes are green - they should give you a new growth soon. Give it plenty of water and food to make sure new canes are strong for lots of blooms next spring.

      Hi again! Thank you for your previous reply. It’s November here and heading into winter. I know my Den. Loddigesii should be going into a cool dry rest but it still has active growing roots and canes. I don’t know what to do. Do I still withhold water and put it in a bright cold spot or wait until it stops growing? I’d love to have blooms but I”m afraid I will do something wrong. Thank you for all of your help!

      Try to put it on the windowsill next winter, you have cold winters, right? It works for me.
