OMG! Thank you, AniMat for calling out those toxic fanboys that blame Pixar’s lack of box office success on John Lasseter’s firing. It really needed to be said and I’m just happy to see you calling them out as well as just hearing your piece on it since this has been something that was annoying me for months in seeing many similar complaints in comment sections on TH-cam related to Elemental’s first opening weekend doing poorly and just jumping to the conclusion that it would be another box office flop like Lightyear. Those fanboys and casual TH-cam users are just frigging idiots! And I do agree that they don’t really know what they want because Lasseter coming back wouldn’t even fix Pixar’s “current dilemmas”, completely forgetting or intentionally ignoring the problems that Pixar went through with their films even during John Lasseter’s time as Chief Creative Officer at Disney and Pixar and probably caused by him. He might even be the reason why Pixar’s original films in the last decade like Brave and The Good Dinosaur ended up with the reputation they have now and why The Good Dinosaur bombed at the box office. Heck, the same effect he had on those films might’ve carried over to the films from this decade like Luca and especially Turning Red considering that one is directed by an Asian woman and we all know John’s poor treatment of his female employees and those films wouldn’t be the critically acclaimed films we know then today. So again, thank you AniMat for calling out the Pixar fanboys for their toxic views on the current era of Pixar just because one troublesome figure was ousted.

This truly is such a big exaggeration and they certainly have not "lost their touch" when it comes to the quality of their films. It's absolutely crazy to me that numbers in terms of box office is apparently the deciding factor for how we are judging the film itself when it's certainly not the only thing we should be paying attention to and just because a film does not making a lot of money does not mean it's a bad film or that it does not have quality whatsoever. I was very sad when the pandemic severely impacted the plans to release Soul, Luca, and Turning Red into theaters, but I watched and loved all 3 of them when I saw them on Disney+ (especially Soul, which is in my top 5 favorite Pixar films in general and Luca I also really loved and is in my top 10 and admire so much of how delightful and heartwarming it was as a film focused on the friendship of 3 kids during 1 summer in Italy). I also loved Elemental when I went to go see it in theaters recently and I'm glad that its box office numbers is sightly improving and the word of mouth has been helping more people give it a chance and actually watch it. I don't see Pixar going away by any means and it's very disingenuous when people put the blame on them for some of their recent films going onto Disney+ as if it's their fault for why their films have bombed recently and thus they are at fault for training people to wait for their films to go on Disney+ when it's like, "You realize that we were dealing with a dire situation with a worldwide pandemic? Let’s not forget that John Lasseter is also responsible for being the director of Cars 2, which is so far Pixar’s first and only critical failure. In part 5 of Animation Lookback: Pixar, you mentioned that the spy story idea that would’ve been seen as a movie Lightning McQueen and Sally were watching during the first Cars was stuck in his head for a long time that he incorporated the spy theme in the second film. Plus the spy story movie that McQueen and Sally watched during a date was from a deleted scene from the 1st film.
Let's also not forget his involvement in Luck's production (and Skydance Animation as a whole). Aside from John's stupid ass just being there (which was already a major red flag), the entire script went through major rewrites and in the end just became a mediocre Monsters Inc clone. The film was so shitty and forgettable that the production behind it was a more interesting story than the feature itself.

Another element I would say makes or breaks a movie’s performance nowadays is public word of mouth. As AniMat says, we live in a reactionary society where people do things or form opinions without taking in critical thinking. Because of that, people are immediately going to assume that a movie is “worth watching” or “not worth watching” without forming their own opinion. With Elemental, people are mainly saying that it’s “good” or “cute”. The thing is, however, that’s no longer good enough for people. Movie theaters have hefty ticket and concession prices, so if people want to see a movie, they’ll want to see one that they think is worth it. So when people started ranting and raving about movies like The Mario Bros or Across the Spiderverse, more people were eager to see it. This is why their box office scores are skyrocketing and people are still discussing these movies till this day. This also benefits in their overall popularity and how people view them, while other flicks such as Elemental or Ruby Gilman: Teenage Kraken don’t have that same effect. Pixar is not suffering. They’re just in a hiccup. Their next movie, however, would probably have to be something revolutionary if they want to see higher results.

No matter what you might think of Moviebob; he’s right when he says Box Office is not the only factor in how well a film does. Especially when a plague’s refusing to leave.
The pandemic played a big role hurting Pixar in the financial aspect that lead three of their acclaim films going to Disney+ while the last two films including Elemental underperform at the box office because the aftermath of Disney+ release and it’ll take time for audiences to slowly return to see their movies on the big screen like it was from the pre pandemic however it didn’t hurt them on the storytelling quality as most of the their films like Soul were mostly acclaimed so the whole “Pixar is struggling” is but complete nonsense. Although I am worry when SaberSpark is planning release the “What Ruined Pixar” video in the future because I feel like that will add more fire in making things worse.
I think that when people say “Pixar is struggling”, they more so mean that the circumstances in the past (mainly the pandemic and how Disney handled the Pixar movies compared to movies from Disney Animation, the remakes, Marvel, etc) are screwing Pixar over. Because three of their films went straight to Disney+, it sort of instilled a habit for people to just wait for the film to come to Disney+ rather than splurge money onto a theater experience. It makes sense why Disney did the strategy regarding the pandemic, but the fact that the habit was instilled due to this still stands. You are correct though, the situation didn’t exactly hurt Pixar in a storytelling perspective. There were duds, sure, but Soul was fantastic and Luca is one of my personal favorites from Pixar. The thing is, though, Elemental was mainly perceived as “good” and “cute”. I haven’t seen the movie so I can’t form my own opinion, but that public word of mouth might simply not be good enough for people nowadays. If they want to spend the hefty prices of a ticket and concession snacks, they’d want to see a movie that they think is worth their time. I experienced that firsthand when my brother and cousin would much rather see Across the Spiderverse for a second time rather than anything else.
While yes Pixar isn’t going away the thing is, Disney isn’t helpful with its marketing; the films lately released lacked any interest, while other studios like DreamWorks were able to drive you in, and that’s how it’s successful. None of the trailers for these latest Disney and Pixar projects are drawing people in. Even with a few successes and ridiculously large budgets, they aren't winning people over as much as they used to.
And I also think screen rant is also stupid for saying that Pixar is losing their magic just because of the bad opening of elemental even though it’s doing much better now actually and also, I think they are just panicking over nothing actually!!!!

The fact that they forgetting that DreamWorks, right before the Bad Guys and The Last Wish, they can't remember that They make mediocre to bad movies (Boss Baby, Trolls, etc) Makes bad shows (The Nine Realms), And sure, they mock Disney, BUT THEY PLAGIARIZED THE ART STYLE FROM THEM (Kelsey from Ruby Gillman)
The thing is Pixar’s and Disney latest out put is either mediocre and ok at best, even if they have a few gems it’s not enough to draw people in, say what you will about DreamWorks at least their latest films look more interesting in terms of its marketability
A lot has changed after Inside Out 2 became a HUGE success giving Pixar the pick me up they deserve after everything they went through in the past 4 years
TBF, I’m kinda getting sick of this narrative on Pixar’s future solely based on the divisiveness of Lightyear. Pixar has definitely had struggles, but considering the pandemic and Bob Chapek’s mishandling of Disney as a whole, it’s not completely unnatural. But considering more often than not, the rhetoric about “Lightyear not being good” is more often than not brought up in regards to Pixar’s standing, I heavily question if some of these people know how situations like these actually work.
Honestly, I’m starting to like watching movies after they leave the theater. Because once they’re on DVD and streaming, nobody talks about box office numbers or reviews. Instead, people watch the movies for the reasons they’re supposed to be watched: as an escape from reality.
The more you look at the yo-yo that is the entertainment industry, not many commentators on it know what &/or how to write about it for their jobs. …unless you make up something to write about.
Just when you can't make the decision on pannels for comic con this year. In fact, Pixar has a problem that they need to deal with in the future. Especially ever since former CEO John Lasseter got the boot in 2018. Their animation rivals are doing better than them right now.

Speaking of which, Linda Wolverton, who wrote Tim Burton’s Alice in wonderland movies and Maleficent movies, is the writer of Spellbound. That’s also another major red flag besides the fact that Lasseter is involved. I love Alan Menken and all but i don’t think his music skills would save the movie from being criticized just like last year’s Disenchanted. And yeah you’re right, bringing John back to Disney Animation and Pixar would not solve anything whatsoever
"Lasseter would have never let Lightyear happen"
my brother in Christ, John Lasseter let Cars 2 happen (a film that is objectively MUCH worse than Lightyear), what exactly is your point?
Facts, defending John Lasseter is a poor argument
@@TexRabbitAnyone with a worthwhile brain could tell you that that whole thing with John Lasseter was blown way out of proportion! If that wasn't the case, he wouldn't still be working in the industry. All he did was hug some people that he had worked with for *years* , and people who've been co-workers for a long time becoming friends and hugging each other is a very common thing from what I gather. If they were somehow made uncomfortable by him hugging them, it's their fault for not telling him. It's not like the man is psychic! I'm so tired of people acting like John Lasseter is some heinous criminal!
Also, 'Cars 2' isn't that bad! Come on!

'Cars 2' isn't that bad! Come on!
Also, he was responsible for Pixar disowning the Star Command series.
@@jlev1028 I'm pretty sure that that's just a rumor.
No matter what you might think of Moviebob; he’s right when he says Box Office is not the only factor in how well a film does.
Especially when a plague’s refusing to leave.
Yeah, I'm really getting annoyed at the fact that people are ignoring that the pandemic happened.
Spider man across the spider verse recently beat guardians of the galaxy in terms of box office
@@hashtagcritical8688I hate clickbait TH-camrs like him.
I’m scared that Pixar is going through this, Pixar has always been a great company and I hope they don’t meet the same face as blue sky studios
The situation is like in the story of "Chicken Little". And not in the Disney movie from 2005.

The fact that they forgetting that DreamWorks, right before the Bad Guys and The Last Wish, they can't remember that
They make mediocre to bad movies (Boss Baby, Trolls, etc)

The thing is Pixar’s and Disney latest out put is either mediocre and ok at best, even if they have a few gems it’s not enough to draw people in, say what you will about DreamWorks at least their latest films look more interesting in terms of its marketability
A lot has changed after Inside Out 2 became a HUGE success giving Pixar the pick me up they deserve after everything they went through in the past 4 years
26:31 to 26:59 - Honestly, spellbound is a film that shouldn't even exist. I'm gonna stick to Nimona and call it a day instead!!!
These types of Disney fans love John Lasseter.
Thankfully, I'm not one of them.
I find it frighting and disgusting, Lasseter better be kicked out of Sky dance!!!
6:06 you forgot to mention that Luca was the most streamed movie of 2021.
2:58 Don’t you mean people who DONT think before they act?
Honestly, I’m starting to like watching movies after they leave the theater. Because once they’re on DVD and streaming, nobody talks about box office numbers or reviews. Instead, people watch the movies for the reasons they’re supposed to be watched: as an escape from reality.
John Lasseter isn't the answer,
much how Donald Trump isn't the answer.

out of curiosity is there are a way to see a movie's profits in merch like we see for box office with sites like box office mojo?
If not, why not?
It makes a lot of sense.
