Yea, I am sticking with Wolfwalkers and Charlie Brown in AppleTV+. Also, let’s not forget the last time Lassiter directed a movie was with Cars 2, the film that arguably broke Pixar’s reputation and moral.

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Well Cars 2 is the Pixar film that ended their Golden Era and started the Post-Golden Era where their films released during the 2010 decade are sequels to their previous films from the previous era, 2 films that went through production trouble and change of directors resulting in 2 films that the public don’t talk about as much, and only 2 films that managed to be on par with the films of the Golden Era.

'Cars 2' is just a misstep, not a film that suddenly ends an era. Pixar otherwise have made good to excellent films with two or three average films overall.

That's a different story. 'The Jungle Book' is a great film, and Walt Disney's death had a legit impact on the quality of Disney's output during the '70s and '80s. There were some gems, but also some missteps, either in story (The Black Cauldron) or animation (Robin Hood). It probably didn't help that the animation industry in general reached a low point around this time.
'Cars 2' is just an example of Pixar not being a perfect studio, and that's nothing to be ashamed of. Everyone makes mistake, and it sucks they can contrive a negative stigma that gives the illusion of quality degradation that's simply non-existent.

It's a shame. This looks like a cool premise.
Also, isn't it ironic that two of the most hated animated stories about bad luck involve members of the industry that have made themselves hated with allegations? You got this by John Lasseter and The Loud House's No Such Luck by Chris Savino. Rather a weird pattern. And, wouldn't you know it? Milo Murphy's Law is one of my favorite animated stories about bad luck, and Dan and Swampy are wonderful people! I'll tell you what's really lucky: the Anti-Fairies from the Fairly OddParents being so popular, since B*tch Hartman made them.

I'm getting a little tired of the "modern Disney" CG character style. It doesn't look awful, there's a reason it's still being used, even by studios outside of the House of Mouse, but it just doesn't wow me in a way that I know character animation is capable of doing. Funnily enough, not long after John Lasseter left Disney/Pixar, I found that at least Pixar's output animation-wise has slowly been turning a tiny bit more experimental in a way that isn't common with most popular western animation studios. (Turning Red, regardless of what you think of the story, has some amazing character design, and more noticeably, character animation.) Still a ways to go until we get more films like Into the Spider-Verse, or Wolfwakers more frequently that really push western animation past its casual movie-goer Disney-kiddie stereotype, but at least it shows that some freedom is being given to make films with different aesthetics.
I just hope John Lasseter either retires or gets fired for his incompetent behavior at Skydance, because I can't see a new animation studio succeeding if it's being choke-held by the man who was largely responsible for Pixar's half-decade slump after Toy Story 3.

It really is heartbreaking that John is the very same man who contributed the bear sequence from The Fox and the Hound alongside Glen Keane, (Masaaki Uasa claimed this to be one of his inspirations to animation) gave birth to PIXAR and not to mention bringing the works of Studio Ghibli to the whole world. He is also my hero and seeing him in such a state, I am very disappointed in him because I know myself that he can do better than this. The way that Skydance hired Lasseter is way too soon. Perhaps they should have hired him in, say, 10 years for the sake of Lasseter to really process his misteps.

    • @DeceivingStareYTP

To me, it isn't even just the sexual misconduct, it's also the fact that Lasseter did nothing to help with the movie at all. (He hurt it a lot, actually.)

@@colbystearns5238 Nobody is perfect, but there's a difference between forgiveness and turning a blind eye to a creator's problems. Especially when that certain somebody is still showing a lot of the same problems as before and showing no sign of improvement. Lasseter fired the original director of Luck and basically hit the reset button on a lot of the film's conceptual progress, and just seemed disinterested during the whole production process.
It's not like John Lasseter was a major creative in this film, he was just one of the six producers on the team, so it's not as if they're giving him a second chance at animation if all he's doing is just denying or accepting ideas for a film (that he didn't creative or envision) that he joined during pre-production.
I get where you're coming from, Colby, but the thing is, just because someone is really talented, doesn't mean they shouldn't be held to a higher moral pedestal simply due to their "legend of their art" status. Again, it's not just sexual misconduct, who knows, maybe Lasseter is improving on that front, I don't know, but Lasseter is still showing that he is really letting his ego get to his head and forcing movies fit his slim template of what he considers to be a good animated story, even if that template is showing its age due to it being done to death. It's why a lot of his later work at Pixar, (specifically Brave, The Good Dinosaur,) felt like bold ideas forced into an old cookie-cutter stencil of a film, not to mention some of those films were stuck in a production nightmare due to John either firing the original female director or just not liking where the story was heading.

Not only that, but the message is alot deeper than people give it credit for. On the surface, it might not seem like much, but as I watched it I saw so many allusions to real life and how even though we can't always control what happens to us, we can still find something good out of it.
When Sam was crying over how she felt Hazel and everyone else would have been better off never knowing her, Bob told her that simply knowing a person as kind, selfless and creatively resourcesful as Sam, Hazel is already very lucky. It's not the big, miraculous things in life that bring joy, often times it's the simplest. After a hard day at work my heart fills when my cat walks up to greet me, even if my work continues at home taking care of both my mom and grandma. Its small, but one small thing can make a hug difference in someone else's life.
As someone who wrestles with depression and self worth, this film really made he see myself differently.
The Dragon, in my eyes, represents good but still missguided intentions. In this day and age where people are told to live their 'best life' and always be happy (which can lead to toxic possitivity) the idea of everyone having good luck, always having a goos day and only having good things come their way is a tempting idea and one we humans have desired for generations. Just look at all of the legends and myths of these utopian places that seem so out of reach yet are so tentalizing.
But, as Bob placed it, "lucky people don't need to try". In a world where we never have to try, never have to work hard, never have to adapt and solve problems either by ourselves or as a group, we become spoiled, lazy, and even more selfish than we are now. We constantly complain about how the world should get better yet we turn a blind eye to the thousands of uportunities where we CAN do it.
By usibg these fantastical elements of good and bad luck, it feels like its using these elements more in a metaphorical sense that we don't always need everything handed to us. By being more like Sam--puting other's needs before our own, and seeing that good things can--and have--come out of a bad situation (like Dragon and Haimdoll the unicorn falling in love) then we can create our own luck, using a little bit of both.
Is the movie flawless? No, but no stort needs to be oscar worthy. Sometimes, all we need is a simle, wholesome film to remind us of what really matters. If a movie can reach at least one or two people and inspire them to look at reality with new eyes (like it did with me and my depression) then how can we say it didn't do its work right?

A Yeah got to agree here, As a long time Pixar fan and is someone who's from the east bay which pixar is based in emeryville, they can get really toxic and hurtful on the same levels of John's horrible behavior and at worst, him and his horrible fan boys bully people where the current sky dance CEO wants him to read the scripts in full, sleeps during zoom online meetings, and yells at the creative team for not liking anthying what they have shown after working long hours. This Lasseter prick has to be taken down at all cost, ask to leave sky dance and be locked away in a mental alyssum so that we can never see his dumb face ever again.

    So many similarities to Rumble
    - Made by an animation studio that's not had a good track record (albeit by default in this case, since this is the first movie for it's studio's animation slate)
    - Made by a company with a guy-in-charge who's *allegedly* a total creep (John Lasseter and Vince McMahon since WWE collaborated with Paramount to make Rumble)
    - Main protagonist is a young woman in a world populated by both humans and anthropomorphic civilians who teams up with one of the anthro characters to save the day
    - The protagonist has a sentimental reason for wanting to be a hero
    - The story focuses on the two main heroes and doesn't do much with the other characters
    - It went into production with a great concept and had everything going for it to be unique and compelling, but thanks to studio meddling, the finished product is a bland "message for the kids" story with a predictable plot that just tries to be like other movies
    - Everything that's great about it (The concept, the animation, the visuals and the voice cast) only puts a band-aid on how bland and generic the story is, making the movie no better than mediocre and no worse than passable, combined with a lack of marketing and direct to streaming release which means it'll probably be long-forgotten in a month from now

From what I can piece together, Lasseter's behavior can be boiled down to several factors. Like, him falling asleep during story meetings is the negative effect of his drinking habit (plus the fact he's pushing 65.). As for the bottlenecking, that's evident of him wanting to make the film good as possible by approving every detail, resulting in it being too restrictive. It reminds me of how the way Walt Disney would insist on approving every detail in his earlier animated films.

Aside from Luck being another generic animated feature, Lasseter was hired because of that dude shown at the end for wanting to have one his favorite icons work for him!? First off, red flag because John is know known for ruining his career by having bad behavior. Second, if he's still gonna be around to work at Skydance, then I'm honestly worried how the studio will end up.

I've heard that too. Plus a lot of people went from Pixar to Skydance too, so whatever the real story is, we don't see the full picture. And it's interesting that Lasseter getting ousted from Disney happened around the same time they found a way to kick Steve Whitmire out of the Muppets. And more recently, Joe Rodhe, so I'm more inclined to think Disney just wants the old guard out the door, by whatever means possible.

❤️💖 Personality, I do have mixed feelings about this movie. One, I do loved the fact that we have a new animation studio entering the animation industry even though we lost Blue Sky a year ago. Second, I do loved the concept about Luck and it is quite interesting and unique to see the world building and creativity about Luck where does it goes between good luck or bad luck and how does luck goes. It would've been good or great if it was done by Disney or Pixar and handled the project in good hands. I do wanted to see this movie but I am not sure.
I wanna give John Lasseter a second chance but after reading an article about him I kinda lost faith in him. Couldn't they pick someone else? Why not pick Lee Unkrich, the director of Finding Nemo, Toy Story 3 and Coco to be the new head of Skydance Animation? He did quit Pixar few years ago maybe he could have been good choice. What about Brad Bird? Maybe he could've another great choice. This is not a great first impression. Skydance animation may not have a great feature debut like Blue Sky Studios with Ice age in 2002 (Rip Blue sky) or Pixar with Toy story in 1995 but the animators and cast and crew's hard work is on display dispite a loosely screenplay that just sucks being honest, needed a major rewrite as Sam having to go through life out of the foster care system because she grew up out of it and having to work and live in the real world were good scenes in my opinion just that the world building was really lazy and poorly done compared to the likes of Monsters Inc and Spirited away. John could just retire and someone would replace him at Skydance and probably do a better job too. The director of Coco has taken a leave from animation for now and is foucing on being with his family which I'm fine with. Spellbound could be skydance hit movie, just gotta wait and see.

John Lasseter used to be one of my biggest influences for art and animation. It really saddens me that he has had some serious allegations 5 years ago. His life is better off if he retires. People who are just entering the industry don’t want a huge that makes them too uncomfortable. Now, I still don’t hate the guy. I just want to suggest what’s best for him.
Anyways about Luck, I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m a bit mixed about it. I will admit, Sam’s design is kinda cute despite looking too much like Disney’s style. The Land of Luck is highly imaginative. But the rest is left to be desired.
