Switching between “whatever ruler is the closest” has gotten me in a pickle more than once. Practicing consistency and patience will eventually be more valuable than any tool I can buy!
SO I watched this video the day after I ordered the off brand. They came in the. Day after I saw it and i could tell that I wanted the accuracy of woodpeckers. Just received my woodpeckers set and so happy I upgraded. Thanks for the video
One of the more in-depth and Informative reviews I;ve seen. But honestly, the Clean Style would be a welcome addition to my apron - it's accuracy would help my failing eyes (nearing 70 but still making sawdust) The last 64th I saw was almost 6 years ago on my birthday! Your videos are always thorough and insightful, thank you for the effort!
I feel like there's a lot of value to be had in videos like these. Both for the viewers and the content creator. Hopefully they're popular. Good job! 👍👍
Does the V notch compensate for the 1/64” difference in the scale ? I would have liked to see both rules set to the same measurement to see if the liners overlap. I have the Woodpeckers model and got the on sale.
I'm in the same boat there bubba, so dont fret about it!! Use what you got, and make what ya got count!!! If we were all rich or sponsored or would be different. Then we could afford, or get what ever we wanted/needed. Not knocking dude in the video by any means at all here, just stating the facts is all.
Its been an Inspire Woodcraft kind of evening for me. I just spent a couple of hours in my shop jointing some 2x material using your table saw technique. Came back inside and saw a notification for this video and spent 22 minutes watching a review I didn't know I needed. I find your videos quite helpful. Glad I found your channel.
Thanks for your in depth review of the woodpecker Paolini Rule. I have had mine for some time but really never took the time to actually learn to use it. I always reverted back to my tape or my starrett square. Now, I finally understand thanks to your video.
Didn’t realize that I needed one of these until watching this video. Have always gotten by with a double square but now see the definite advantages of these.
I've always wondered what made the Woodpeckers brand so premium, and this video did a great job explaining that. While I think the Woodpecker brand is probably objectively better for all the reasons you described, I've never needed accuracy to that degree, so the Clear Style would probably be fine for my shop (except the red looks better. :D)
I'm a newbie to woodworking (about a year). I've learned a lot from you and others on TH-cam. I started with mostly budget tools, but I'm upgrading as income permits. Thanks for all the help. It really makes a positive impact on people like me.
You are excellent in your presentation!! You obviously use your equipment and understand it and are able to relay your knowledge in a clear and understanding way. Thank you!
That is "key" to having a good TH-cam channel I think. I've been on some channels and thought, "What is this person trying to get to here!!!!???"....and they just totally loose my interest.
I don't think they are expensive at all. Just like festool... You get what you pay for. If you are a carpenter making at least 100+ hr as a good one should, you can make it pay for itself in a couple of hours. This video is like comparing a prius to a rolls royce... LOL
The problem with knockoffs is that it is a stolen idea used to profit China. People say so what if I buy from China. Well that is a huge issue. There are so many thing that are not made in the USA and because there is such a limited amount of USA made prices are high just to be able to afford the cost of living. Prices are to high because so many people in the United States rather give China control over our economy.
Great explanation of differences. Learnt a lot. Justified the higher cost with better accuracy and usefulness. Thank you and keep teaching and explaining stuff. You get what you pay for and thankfully there are people and companies that believe in making quality over quantity.
“Having that extra inch down there really comes in handy” 😂😂😂😂 Great info like always! Been looking at the woodpeckers one for a while. Finally have my first real shop and building it out has been a blast...but expensive lol
"really, how would they know?" You just elevated yourself above every PEng who ever failed to question their own supremacy. SECOND round is now on me. Crap.
I had the good fortune to take a class, taught by Greg Paolini, in 2019. As a parting gift, Greg gave us each a Paolini pocket rule. What a handy tool, after a great class, taught by a wonderful guy! I hope to go back for another class, after the pandemic is over; and I use the Pocket rule every single day.
Your style of teaching is precise and to the point and this old man gets it. Always look forward to your videos. Thanks for the work you put in to share your knowledge.
Some great insights into both and the differences. Also nice to not hear the corporate shilling of products, just an experience based review of both. Pocket rules are always handy for smaller measurements wherein tape measures end hooks obscure your view below an inch ( sometimes 2 inches) and used to regularly carry one daily until i lost mine on a job. You just dont realize how handy they are until its gone sadly. Best of luck, great review, subscribed with notifications and look forward to many more insights.
I watched this when you first posted it and watching it today I think I figured out the stand issue to the clear style. If you place the adjustment block with the slit base down and the adjustment knobs pointing up, you can probably place the ruler into the slot in the block.
I don;t have either one but am very intrigued. I am recently retired and jumping into the woodworking game. So looking forward to making some fun projects.
@12:43, this is just my take, the reason is goes from quarter to half back to quarter is for finding the center point and for finding same distance in either side from that center point, so that say you want to make a 1/2” dado on the router, you mark then center, then go 1/4 either direction to account for the circumference of the 1/2” bit, since it is easier to calculate the 1/2” diameter of the bit than to find the center of it. Same thing for the metric. There are are few tools that are mark in such in a way and how I use it to my benefit. I don’t see what other way it would be designed for, though I’m sure we could come up with other uses that it wasn’t designed for.
I thought that originally as well. But it does add up when the metric side works in the opposite manner. Every center scale rule that I have used starts at zero in the center and works it’s way out. That way you don’t need to find center first because that’s what the rule is for. On the metric side it could be used that way. With the imperial side starting at a half-inch at the center, it can still work, but is an interesting design choice if that’s indeed its intended purpose.
Well Jodi, I don't have any of these measuring & marking tools. I have my Dads & my Grandfather's pressuring and marking instruments. Most all of them are showing their age and use. I'm just gonna be Bold and say, I SURE COULD USE THIS GROUP OF TOOL'S. I enjoy ALL of YOUR VIDEOS there very precise and easy to follow. After spending 38 years in the MARINES & AIR FORCE. I now have the ability to put down roots and enjoy ALL of my Wood Working projects. Please keep the VIDEO'S COMING. The Gunny
Hey, I truly appreciate your unbiased Comparison on your tool reviews. It truly helps woodworking hobbyist like myself justify spending money and where. Thanks to your review, I picked up one of the blemish adjustable squares. My go to at this point and money well spent!
Thanks for putting together this video as well as your other budget vs premium layout tool comparison videos. I finally ordered the woodpeckers 8” pocket rule to keep in my apron. I have their 4” saddle square and love it but an 8” version of that is too big for my apron. I wanted the pocket rule for parallel marking and layout work and think this will be much easier to keep in my pocket than a double square. Woodpeckers makes fantastic tools that last a lifetime but their higher price point, for me at least, means buying one and not a set. I have only been wood working for a year so selecting one size and hoping that is the correct one for your workflow is intimidating. I’d imagine this is true for other new woodworkers But I wish I would have seen this video or known about the clear style set on Amazon two weeks ago. For the price I paid for my woodpeckers 8” rule in stainless I could have gotten a full set of the clear style. Even if these are not tools that last a lifetime, it would let me try out the different sizes and determine which size works best for me before spending the money on a woodpecker version. Thanks for including the giveaway. Here’s to hoping I win to figure out what is the right size pocket rule for me as I continue to practice building my skills as a woodworker.
Just a thought but @ 11:08 where the Clear Style is "off" might actually be compensation for the marking v-notch. Say you want a line at 1 inch. Lock the block at 1 inch and make the mark. Your mark is behind the edge of the rule but the edge of the rule is actually 1+ inches so for your mark to be an accurate 1 inch, it has to be behind the edge. Hopefully that makes sense. Of course I could be totally wrong.
Always glad to see another Jody video pop up. Thanks for the review and thanks for all the time you spend teaching us and letting us look over your shoulder as you work
I have not used this type of ruler. I have a little 6” combination square I use all the time that lives in my apron though. After seeing your examples, I can see how this would come in super handy and would definitely keep the small one in my apron too. Thanks for the informative review!
Great demo- I enjoy the information that you provide the community and the way you deliver it, top notch! I have been wanting to pull the trigger on the Woodpecker Paolini set and saw the Clear Style and was considering those as well. Thanks for the intricate reviews on both!
Thanks for the video. As a beginning woodworker I find your videos very informative and easy to follow. This set would be a great addition to my slowly growing toolbox.
Your descriptions of the differences between the two manufacturers was excellent. This is my first time at your channel. When I visit a woodworking channel and they cannot convey their thoughts, I just leave and never return. That won’t happen here. Thanks!
I love my stainless Paolini rules. Got all three sizes and I use them all the time. 6in sits in the top of my apron, 8in in a front pocket. Nice video.
Thank you for the excellent illustration of the tool and the differences between the two. I do love woodpecker tools myself and have a few myself. I didn’t originally find a need for this one in particular but now think it would be great for setting up my router. Thanks again for the attention to the details, really helpful.
Great Video... I'm learning about tools I didn't even know existed. I've watched several of your videos and appreciate the objectivity; actually watched the video about the Woodpecker rules yesterday. I've been doing projects off and on for years, but very intermittently and I'm trying to be more serious in what I do. I worry with the vast array of tools that many are cool but not really necessary. Your perspective is extremely useful so I'll be watching a lot more. Cheers!
Hi Jodi, love your channel and videos. I just made one of your table saw jointer jigs and have it hanging in my shop. It's not a real jointer but does the trick until I can get the cash for a real one. One tool at a time. I look forward to all you unbiased reviews to help me on future purchases. My next thing of yours I plan to make is your box joint jig, so far it's the best for my needs I've seen on youtube. What would I use the ruler for, to step up my measuring game. What I use now is rummage sale or pawn shop finds. I'm slowly building my tool arsenal. I love used but hate the game of 'whats missing or broke on this tool' game everytime I get it home. Thanks for you work you do, keep up the good work.
Great walkthrough as always 👍I was talking with my brother about a blade deflection issue I was having and the use of my Woodpeckers mini square. He again related to me that his favorite is the Paolini pocket square and how he uses it daily. Looks like I need to get on the bus. Thanks for the great info.
These pocket rules would be great to help me improve my skills and then be able to teach my son how to make things when he gets a few years older. Love your videos, they are always educational, clear, and to the point without much fluff.
Newbie woodworker here and realizing how expensive woodworking is collecting valuable tools to make your life easier!! I definitely need this in my tool box!! 🙏🏼
Hey bub, dont work yourself up into an anxiety attack with over thinking that you just have to have everything you see some other wood worker with!! Trust me, you will just drive yourself insane over it. Slowly build up your tools over time. Try to buy new ones if you can afford it, and when you can afford it. Set reasonable goals for yourself and keep a good schedule on projects that you are going. That way you dont have projects that are way too difficult for you to do, or you dont have 20 different projects that you have started on, and not finished. I've been in construction work for most of my life, and one would think that would be great to get into wood work...they are two totally different monsters. Having a construction background does help, but wood working can be a little more complicated than a demolition job... Anyway, I'm just here trying to give some helpful advice/suggestions to help you further your wood working experience!! Just take your time, stay safe, and have fun!!!
Thank you for the lengthy and comprehensive review. I have a few Woodpecker measuring tools and pleased with the functionality especially as they come in fully metric versions and not compromised by some other measuring system.
Great comparison. Your explanation of the V vs U groove is brillant. I wouldn't have thought it would make such a difference. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I don't own either but have coveted a paolini pocket rule for months now. So far I use a combo square and an Incra Tiny-T rule. Would love to win this! Thanks for the review 👍🏼
Tape measures can be out a little as well, if you switch / misplace one and grab another during a project. Thanks for the tutorial on using this type of marking/ measuring device. Would be handy indeed.
I think your concern is correct--I've gotten the stainless steel one for just that reason (plus the thicker aluminum one incurs more paralax error, something that I don't want).
Greetings from Down Under. As always great video - such fantastic info. I have 2 WoodPeckers Paolini rules. Have found I use them much more than I expected for things like checking that things are square or that a guide rail is parrallel to an edge before ripping. Great advice on using the rule over the full length of the router table top. Had no trouble with slipping even when only tightening the thumb screws to a light finger tight.
I own a lot of Woodpecker and Incra layout and measuring tools and they are all great. I also bought the knock off Paolini Rulers from Amazon (set of three for $29.99. When I ordered them, I thought for sure I was wasting my money, but I was wrong. they measuring units line up exactly with both my Incra and Woodpecker tools. I was honestly very impressed with the quality. It's important to note that I do not own a Woodpecker Paolini ruler for comparison, but I doubt that the quality could be proportionately better in comparison to the higher price. I enjoyed this and all your videos! I just thought I would add my experience to the comments.
Glad to see a post from you today!!! I think my grandson and I would make good use of this rule set .we build “stuff “. Thanks. A nice comparison. I built and use your box jig. Best one on TH-cam. Lou
Thx. Great info. I have been looking at the paolinis but can’t justify the price. Would love a shot at the clear style rule set. Glad I found your channel recently.
Never used anything like those before. Think they would come in very handy in my small wood shop. Even if not as precise as the woodpecker ones. Very much enjoy your videos please keep pumping them out !!!
I am working on remodeling my kitchen and bathrooms. With that being said I would truly appreciate any of the rulers. It would be helpful in building the cabinets, countertops, and the finishing the trim. Just watched the video and was great to see a lower prices tool similar to WP awesome tools. I checked on the Clear (black ruler) that it stand up on the 1" vertical. Unlike WP where you passed the holder through the square hole to measure. With the black ruler you leave the section that slides up and down the ruler. Secure the screws and then stand the ruler vertically using the flat side of the adjustable section. Thank you for the video and your time.
Great in-depth review ! Don't have either yet, but have been thinking about the woodpecker one based on your review and "bang for the buck" advice. Glad to see you back! Thanks for all you do!
Still using Empire products so I'll gladly take any of that off your hands!! Great in depth video, very informative. Have just recently found your channel but glad I did!
Great summation. I have several of the stainless Woodpeckers. I also have many other Woodpeckers tools. I agree with you, it's one of the best tools they make. I encourage anyone considering these to get the stainless version. There is little to no parallax.
Great tools and great techniques. I especially like the precision of the V vs semicircle. I've heard that you can't work wood to 32nd inch tolerance. But I find going for it makes a difference. I'd like to use the Clear instead of the tri-square I use now. Thanks for the thoughtful Woodworking Tips.
I bought the 3 Clear Style 3 pack after watching your review video on the Woodpeckers version. Didnt want to drop that much dough on a ruler I may or may not use. I really like them and find them extremely useful. Especially the 6" version. May have to pull the trigger on the Woodpecker after watching this comparison video.
Don't have either, but have been super tempted to get one and see how they could improve my accuracy. Pretty new to woodworking and have learned quickly how the right measuring tools can really save a lot of headaches. Once thought a ruler is a ruler, what's the big deal... Well... Lots of big deals!
I have the 6" stainless combination Woodpeckers version. I use it for router bit height (as you demonstrated), for marking small parts, and SAE/metric head bolt size. Marking larger pieces, I use the Incra rulers without exception.
Thank you for this video. I am not a full time woodworker, so this is an easy choice for me. Didn’t know this brand existed until your video, so thanks!! I am very excited to try to product out now. One day when I am a full time woodworker, making lots of money lol I might purchase the woodpecker brand. 👍
Hey all. We have officially closed the giveaway on this one. Thanks so much to all that watched and left a comment!
Switching between “whatever ruler is the closest” has gotten me in a pickle more than once. Practicing consistency and patience will eventually be more valuable than any tool I can buy!
TH-cam only allows "like", but you're basically adopted. Good boy. Now, go do your chores.
(Bro-sh!t aside, seriously: insight)
You are a really good teacher! I’m a hobbyist and learning. Your comparison of the rules taught me ways to use them I haven’t thought about. 😊
SO I watched this video the day after I ordered the off brand. They came in the. Day after I saw it and i could tell that I wanted the accuracy of woodpeckers. Just received my woodpeckers set and so happy I upgraded. Thanks for the video

Great video, why not file a little notch to enable the pencil to fit the Clear Style.
Yes... would also luv to see this.
Can’t afford either. Lol. I use a cheap combi square for just about everything
How much was the clear style? WP was $150, but the CS is no longer available from Amazon.
I'm in the same boat there bubba, so dont fret about it!!
Use what you got, and make what ya got count!!!
If we were all rich or sponsored or would be different. Then we could afford, or get what ever we wanted/needed.

I love these comparison videos always find something else to look into for when I can afford to upgrade my tools.

Maybe the mm end of the black one is for using the zero to centerfind on a board’s edge by eyeballing the edges to the same opposing numbers? 🤷🏻♂️
I have always felt that while Woodpecker tools look great and are extremely well made, I have trouble justifying the price.
I spent a lot of money on tools that I hardly use. I enjoy owning them, but sometimes feel like one day I’ll regret wasting all that money.
I don't think they are expensive at all. Just like festool... You get what you pay for. If you are a carpenter making at least 100+ hr as a good one should, you can make it pay for itself in a couple of hours.

Excellent comparison! And thank you for pointing the differences in accuracy of the notches between both rules.

im addicted to buying woodcrafting tools .. love your videos

Cheers!
Luv your video as a new woodworker and a grandma making furniture for the grandkids I need all the help I can get. Thank u
Building up my tool collection to start my own side business would love a set of these. Love the vids keep up the good work.
Thanks for taking the time an all the details in the differences between the two rulers.
Such a great and unbiased review...but also helpful to learn all the features of the pocket rulers! Gotta get one!
After watching this video I have a much greater appreciation for the semicircle on my combination squares.
Nice detailed review. I don’t currently own either but have considered buying this tool in the past.
Thanks for the video. I had thought about buying the Clear Style set, but had some questions that you answered.
Thank you for the lengthy and comprehensive review. I have a few Woodpecker measuring tools and pleased with the functionality especially as they come in fully metric versions and not compromised by some other measuring system.
Got neither but would really appreciate either of these as I am making cabinets.
Great comparison. Your explanation of the V vs U groove is brillant. I wouldn't have thought it would make such a difference. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Love your videos. I watch as much to learn as for enjoyment. Your explanation and teaching style are what I like best! Keep up the good work!
I don't own either but have coveted a paolini pocket rule for months now. So far I use a combo square and an Incra Tiny-T rule. Would love to win this! Thanks for the review 👍🏼
Nice video breaking down the differences, much appreciated before making purchases
Thanks for the video. It's nice to see someone who tries to look out for the viewers
Tape measures can be out a little as well, if you switch / misplace one and grab another during a project. Thanks for the tutorial on using this type of marking/ measuring device. Would be handy indeed.
Since both are made from some sort of aluminum alloy, would you avoid using a marking knife with these rules?
I think your concern is correct--I've gotten the stainless steel one for just that reason (plus the thicker aluminum one incurs more paralax error, something that I don't want).
Greetings from Down Under. As always great video - such fantastic info.
I have 2 WoodPeckers Paolini rules. Have found I use them much more than I expected for things like checking that things are square or that a guide rail is parrallel to an edge before ripping. Great advice on using the rule over the full length of the router table top. Had no trouble with slipping even when only tightening the thumb screws to a light finger tight.
Thanks for the comment. Yeah I had a feeling it was just something I was doing wrong.
Ordered my first Woodpecker tool about 2/3rds of the way through your video. You pointed out enough value in t(e difference to convince me.
I've never used one of these. Just my combination and double square. Thanks for the lesson.
Interestingly, today (1/25/2012) the ClearStyle ruler set is no longer available on Amazon. Wonder if there might be some legal trouble causing that.
Valuable comparison and information. I’m unconvinced that I need either one, especially the expensive one.
Love your layout tool comparisons. Very thorough my man.
Comparison begins at 06:51. Great content, thanks for the video, I'd love the set for my new shop!
for marking a board, filing a tiny notch in the slot of the double square with a triangular file works well too.
That's a great idea. Haven't seen anyone do that before.
My first time here. Enjoyed the review. I haven't used or seen these two pocket rules. Thanks!
