I've held off from DJI waiting for this, and I'm sooo glad it's here; to be honest, I'm going with the Shark Byte simply because I don't like DJI's proprietary approach to everything; FPV has always been a real open-source environment, you could choose whatever components you wanted. Not so with DJI, it's their way or nothing, and I don't like that. Plus I already have good enough googles, it's a no-brainer for me.

Principles are great and I have to admit equipping a lot of my fleet with DJI left me feeling dirty, but I've been flying a year of HD whilst this was maturing. Even now this can't hold a candle to the initial DJI release. Unless you're on a budget, principles are the only reason to buy this over DJI. Even Steele has come over to the dark side.

    • @Mediamarked
      @Mediamarked 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@pooljunki1 DJI for the win, but yeah... it still is great that other brands are putting up a fight. Standing behind a company is a choice, being a fan of a company that works in the same way as Apple is another thing. They make great products, but when they have an absolute monopoly on the goggle/vrx system, there is no need to update beyond the superficial. You can expect higher and higher prices, for the same old shit in a new polish with that. They are on top, but when a top is reached, new limits are rarely a goal.
For example, see Mt Himalaya. The absolute height in the world. At first a magnificient peak- now people stand in line for their meaningless photo at the top. And after that- no mountain is higher. = boring. Innovation is what keeps non-rock based stuff interesting.
If you haven't got new goggles at the moment, DJI is a great choice to get the best. But if you've got great goggles and want something more out of them, why not do it that way. At least you can get other cameras from renowned brands.
Also.. be gratefull some people don't like DJI. Timecop made the Naze32 to spite DJI, without that you wouldn't even have your hobby, and all hobby grade quads would be sluggish, locked down DJI propped tripods.

It's just breaking up differently, they both break up. DJI hides it's break up by blurring and artifacting the image, upping the latency and dropping frames. Shark Byte is breaking up more like analogue, i.e you get static, but it isn't dropping any frames and the latency is consistent. I guess it comes down to what you are looking for in your type of flying.

@Chris Holmes I agree with everything you say, mine was just a joke. I believe that if I were a racing driver and had already spent $ 700 on fatsharks plus various modules and antennas, I would now buy the Byte. But I do not correspond to this description and I found my ideal solution in DJI fpv, and I am not referring only to the image quality but above all to how they have rationalized and simplified all the steps. Personally I also switched to the use of the DJI remote control because I believe that the system gives its best in its complete configuration. With the remote control and the viewers with stock antennas I enjoy flying quietly in a radius of 2 km, and I could go even further, in nature and doing some freestyle. The truth is that DJI has changed an "old" fpv world and that pisses off a lot of people. If I think only of the improvements they will be able to make in a short time .... what will happen when they are implemented with a gps system? and when will they equip the cam with an electronic stabilizer ?!
however one thing is certain, going up in the sky with these gadgets is a fantastic thing. In any case! enjoy.

    • @obesesoldier1
      @obesesoldier1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Being able to direct output HDMI is super convenient compared to DJI where you have to buy the super expensive smart controller for that option. That said, I just don't see how this can even compare to DJI in quality or even cost after factoring in the need to have analog goggles to begin with. Plus, this is a whole 15 months after the DJI system was announced, certainly too little too late. Good to have potentially another option, but I just don't see who this is for.

I have this and can confirm that in testing it does seem to play nice with others and doesn't stomp on your fellow analogue pilots, also it works directly with the laprf 8 way timer using the standard raceband channels and it has a usable hdmi out for spotting. Does it look as pretty as dji? No. does it address the issues dji has for racing? Yes this can only get better and I'm so happy that there is a working alternative to the dji system. *also the dvr seem to be a bit crappy which is a shame so its not really showing the full experience that you get in the goggles.

I have multiple Fatsharks and radios, this option allows me to use gear I already have!! Also, given competition often pushes technology further faster and helps lower prices in the process....it's a good thing to have more than on company with a product "monopolizing on a product or service hurts everyone in the long run!!". I buy DJI at the first day it comes out. No dead air units till this day. I spend so much money on new analog stuff because it broke or overheat. So much lenses destroyed and and and. Not a single one with dji, because of the lens protection they sell with a separate glass and because i can see where i fly and dont need to guess if it fits to the narrow hole 😅

See? Individual choice is kinda complex. We're not all you.
HD is better. I'm not saying it isn't. I would love a good HD system but right now, with Brexit and the pandemic, I can't opportunity-risk purchase DJI and I would still need my HDO2 to fly the micros. It's not good financial sense.

Dont get me wrong, i had HD3 with rapidfire and lots of stuff. But why u buy a HDO2 (its still analog signal, why should you need OLED displays 😅) and in the same sentence calling DJI too expensive (cant afford).
I Sold my stuff and for my whoops and micros i slide a analog mod into a 3D printed holder, i can watch my analog friends and still fly my whoops in winter. For the goggle itself it has diop holder, so you can change the +/- like u want.
In term of bad eyes the DJI soultion its much better, because of the big screen and you can change the size. For me its better, all friends with glasses say its better 😅

Thanks for sharing, JB. But to answer your question... lol, no, just no. 😆
Awww.... didn't test the Shart Bite in "stock condition" without omni's on the goggles or the VTX.
"Beta" isn't a "feature" such that "we can make it better"... it's who wants to pay money for an unfinished product, test it for us, and we may pull the plug on service/spares/parts/support at anytime.
Ouch, $250 for the "promotional Beta version" plus 3x omni's, so $300 plus $500 HDO2/Orqa goggles. Ugh. Sure you "can" use this with any HDMI-ready goggle... however, it will look like crud unless the goggles can at least do 720p/60. This is only a temporary band-aid solution for people who already have one of those two top-tier-priced goggles (not "analog goggles" as those prices don't even include the $150 Rapidfire module and two antennas).
$210 for the production video receiver, missing 2 antennas ($20-$40 for decent/better omni's) that looks like an afterthought added to $500 goggles, instead of $529 DJI goggles (frequently on sale for less). Nah.
$90 for a a VTX without antenna, doesn't record 1080p, maxes out at 720/60, has video breakup, has no aluminum heatsink/enclosure, etc. instead of $80-$99 for Vista/Air Unit. Nah.
Guessing $50 for the camera, as the top analog cams are $40'ish, rather than a 1080p/60 and 720p/120 camera for $60. Nah.
    Hard pass on all that.
Why would you spend all that money to "convert all of your quads" when you could spend the same or less on Vista kits and get way better video quality and user friendliness? Doesn't make any sense.
Just noticed that you talked about the 8 channels, which sound EXACTLY like a CLONE of DJI's channels and frequencies, including the channel order... then go on to say "ANOTHER major difference is that ShartBite is a video receiver only...."

the true appeal of the DJI system is the ecosystem. You don't have think that much about what googles, what cam, what controller, what receiver. I waited for analog before starting FPV, and god i love the VTX/RTX combo of the air unit. The controller isn't the best, especially for pinchers like me, but it's way good enough. The DJI googles are so confortable, and the menu navigation is so fluid, it's really a good point. What makes DJI win in my heart is the fact that it's easy. Everyhting technical in FPV is pretty hard to get, especially further you go down the rabbit hole, and DJI is just BNF 90% of the time. Also i hate the breackup on SharkByte, focus mode is a lifesaver on DJI.

While I commend fatshark for working on a digital system. I think it’s crazy that so many people have been in support of them because they are healthy for fpv as a hobby. Fatshark has had a track record of not listening to its users over issues like power buttons and better dvr. They have literally said that we know better than our consumers time and time again. Yet dji has not only been listening to its users but giving amazing software updates time and time again. Fat shark has already sold a digital system allowing users to buy into being a beta tester. I’m hoping that the new system is actually a decent product so at least we have options and a competitor to dji but honestly I despise fatshark. Also the attractive nature of product interoperability like analogue had with cameras vtx’s and receivers goes out the window if they keep updating the digital hardware that’s never out of ‘beta’.

@Russell Phelan Since the FPV quad market is so relatively small to the GPS drone market yes it is a surprise they went this far creating an HD system, but given how much money it must have cost them I'm guessing they're not making as much return as their bread'n'butter GPS drones do, so they must have thought their developed wireless HD technology is usable in other areas they're looking at or already developing.

On one hand I already have HDO2 goggles (Which I really like) and the variable latency of the DJI system bugs me but I can't ignore that image quality difference, the extra visibility of trees and powerlines. (And from the point of view of cost I missed the initial discount on Shark Byte so the value difference isn't huge when I consider the money I already have in my goggles) I think I'm going to have to wait until early next year to see if DJI come out with anything new.
It's worth noting that, at least in my opinion, DJI is really a camera company at heart with a specialisation in aerial filming. I'm not sure if others would agree or disagree with me on that but that's how I've always seen them so it's no surprise that a high bar has been set to be beaten.

I don't think this was ever going to make DJI users convert to SharkByte, I don't think that was what they were going for. It seems like FatShark are targeting those that already have analogue goggles, want to try digital but, don't want to spend (or can't afford) the money for the DJI system. I'm squarely in that position. Although, if money was no object, based on what I've seen so far... I'd choose the DJI system.

The budget argument doesn't even work because decent goggles would add a substantial amount to the price. This is only viable for hardcore analog flyers who want digital with the same goggles, and the number of hardcore analog pilots is quickly diminishing.

Dji has a lot of things right but it's not the same things fat shark has right. Dji has a lot to fix beyond latency issues to get their product to compete with fat shark (not because fat shark is better but because it's a different market).
Fat shark has the latency advantage but it also has the size/weight advantage. You can't put dji HD in a tinywhoop. You CAN put shark byte in a tinywhoop. Shark byte also works with lap timers and doesnt need to transmit from the goggles, causing analog signals to get blown out. Because of this, shark byte is also much more suitable for spectator viewership and doesn't have an "audience" mode (which is good for racing). And on that note, shark byte also has an hdmi out built in whereas dji's hdmi out costs over $700.
Dji has a lot of advantages over fat shark as well. I'm not saying fat shark is better. I'm just pointing out that both have room to coexist and it's gonna take a lot more than a latency fix from dji to blow fat shark out of the water.
In fact, as it stands, it seems the main downside of shark byte is a lower quality video and less range.
But as other companies will be developing better HD cameras (this runcam nano is quite a bit smaller than the dji camera) and other vtx's for the shark byte, I think there's a higher chance shark byte will start standing up to dji rather than the other way around.
But regardless, as it stands, neither system can touch the other one.

  • @michaelwilkes0

why does the image look so bad? It looked hazy and hard to see, and the sun was blowing out the image, and the contrast was poor, and dynamic range was crummy. It looked a little worse than a normal analog runcam eagle 2. Maybe that can all be fixed with some camera tweaking. I do find that cameras default to settings that are far from ideal for fpv. As a short rant, there is a branch in front of my quad. There are camera settings that allow me to see that branch, and settings that make that branch invisible. I want the settings that allow me to see that branch. Yes, the colors may be a little off, dark shadows aren't dark, bright yellow flowers are dull grey, squirrels look like ducks, yeah i know, but I can see the branch.
