Need a damper about halfway up the pipe. Then cover the top of the stove in large rocks. Fire it up and keep it fed for a couple hours till you are ready for bed. Then stuff it full and damp it down a bit. The rocks will continue to put off heat for a few hours after the stove burns out.

What's that expression "There's no replacement for displacement". I think the same applies for stoves, limited amount of fuel, limited burn time. I'm sure whatever you make will easily beat these tin cans though, and especially if you use a few firebricks as mentioned, maybe a steel shelf (baffle) inside to give the fire more dwell time in the box before it runs out the chimney. Dampers help too. Read up on secondary burn tubes if you really want to get some efficiency.

You need to stick some heat bricks under and around to keep heat in. They are cheap to buy from ebay cheers Kevin

I need to do something, I want to use this camping this winter, and night can get down to - 20c, normally sleep by fire but getting too old for that

I think if you build your own you can get better burn time.

All of these little stoves are a bit of a gimmick. I need to set up my tent and little Russian stove and redo the burn time test but I am certain it was longer than two hours with just dry aspen.
