All those added high C’s are in very bad taste and Bumbry was the one who started, terrible!!! I was at Carnegie Hall for a recital of hers, her agent Bob Lombardo was giving away tickets because they were not selling as he expected. The program was presumptions, she cracked on notes, missed others and to add insult she ended with a pop song, lights down cabaret style, it was so ludicrous that someone screamed SING IN QUESTA REGGIA! Still, the woman is one of the greatest voices, so was Verrett but I think Verrett was more the ARTIST, no wonder she was called “The Black Callas”. They practically obliterated other black mezzos of that era, like Barbara Conrad and Florence Quivar

I had a mentor who was a long time singer at the Met and when we worked for her she said “I want to see you out there competing with each other! It gets yours and the audiences blood boiling”! There’s nothing wrong with a little “healthy” competition!
