I also don’t think I’ll be upgrading. Even though I mainly play in handheld mode I think the screen is fine on the old switch. I would also have to buy another satisfy grip since I really enjoy using one,
Likewise, I have the v2 and it’s docked most of the time. It’s nice to see OLED happen, but we have the Lite for portable and now OLED for premium portable. Where’s a model for the docked users? 2 portable orientated models doesn’t make much sense.
Im upgrading from my day one switch to an oled this friday, and i think the thing that ill notice most is the BATTERY lol. the battery on my day one switch is TERRIBLE now. it goes from 100 to 80 percent after only 15ish minutes off the dock. yeah im looking forward to that battery lol
Some games use more battery power too so u have to take that into consideration but its been 4years so the battery should be bad by now. I wish i still had my launch switch. U could always get a battery replacement.
Yep. I agree. I’ve a day one Switch and the battery is poor now. Maybe a 2 hours at an absolute push for battery life. I got a decent price for selling my day 1 Switch (and keeping my most treasured games) and have been without it now for a full week!! I cannot wait for Friday now. It’s a nice upgrade for me until a genuine power upgraded Nintendo comes along (whenever that may be). 4.5 years is a decent return for a console so roll on Friday👍👍
I play my Switch in portable mode 98% of the time, so the bigger screen is absolutely worth it for me. It was the same reason I upgraded from a regular 3DS to an XL. I’m sure I can recoup most of the cost selling my current Switch since it’s in great shape and I still have all of the original packaging and everything.
Same here. I play about 95% handheld because I'm either away from the house or don't want to bother my wife by having the TV on (late in the evening especially). The screen on my original launch day Switch is just looking so small the more I watch these videos about the OLED model. I get used to that thin bezel and then look at the super thick bezel on mine. I mean, most people upgrade their phone every couple of years and spend $500+ on it. I've had my Switch for 4.5 years now. It's just outdated.
Maybe this was just too obvious to mention, but the biggest factor when deciding if the OLED is worth the upgrade is often you play in handheld mode! Because other than the new color dock and ethernet port, this system is 100% geared towards handheld users, and not the people who play the Switch primarily docked.
Thank for this explanation because that what I wanted to know. I'll be playing it primarily docked on the tv. I was on the fence which to get and I just purchase the regular one on Black Friday. Thank you!
I haven't owned a Nintendo device since the Gameboy Color, so I've been looking at lots of content to help me make a decision. Your Switch OLED coverage is second to none. I love your style and presentation. Can't wait to see more, and to get my order in Friday! 👍
@@Angelowalker. Hey, thanks! I should have updated that comment. I got my hands on one about a week after I posted that. All's well that ends well. I appreciate you for giving me a heads up!
The only reason you should worry about burn-in is if both of these apply: 1) You mainly play one game, particularly a retro game, due to its likely static UI elements 2) You exclusively play in handheld mode, for hours on end, every single day, for years There are folks who play their Switch like this, and they should avoid the OLED model, frankly, as there is a good chance they’ll deal with image retention. Otherwise, anyone else? You’re fine. Seriously. If you play your Switch a couple hours a week and switch back and forth between handheld/TV mode like I do, you will never get close to getting burn-in.
Brightness level you are playing in handheld also factors alot in any OLED display the higher the brightness the more "Burn" your are doing in your screen with static images..
@@vivid8979 I'm gonna be using it at about 50-75% brightness, should I be fine? I am one of the people who only play a few hours a week at most. Only time I put more time than about 8hrs a week is when a new game comes out, like when botw 2 comes out I'll probably be playing all my free time but other wise it's only about 8-10 hrs at most a week, so should I be good? Actually about half that time will be on my TV. Thinking on it I'll play vibrant games or new ones handheld (metroid, botw 2) and for games I've already put so many hours into I'll do tv, like xenoblade chronicles 1 & 2 I'll do tv, or the pokemon games.
@@kadenstonebraker9921 the black bars don't burn in - they're turned off, there's nothing that can burn. If anything, what you're seeing is very light burn on the rest of the display that is used.
I think oled was a poor choice in my opinion. There are probably loads of handheld gamers playing on the way to work between class, casually at home, sofa or bed. In 2021 you shouldn't be worried about avoiding playing your favourite game for hours daily.
Still have my launch Vita. Given it's OLED it's an appropriate comparison. No burn-in after all of these years. Worst I see is some semi-terrible muira effect on black screens. Not the end of the world.
And not to mention, the Vita was when OLED was really new in mobile stuff. Samsung just put out the first Galaxy S 2 years before, and they've come a long way in a decade
@@davidagullo3786 you've asked him, but here's what I'm playing: Horizon chase (open right now), Gravity rush, NFS MW, dragon quest builders, 2064, farm simulator 14. I have some other games installed too, like: Hotline Miami 1, Fez, Walking dead season 1, Jak and Dexter collection etc... And i only have a 16gb Memory card 🤣 (also a oled model)
I must say after upgrading from the launch model, that the upgrade is quite significant. Especially since I mainly play handheld and the extra battery time is sweet and the bigger and way better screen is game changer. The Premium feel and the louder and better sound paired with the built in LAN port is a neat bonus. Finally the extra GBs is always helpful. Always wondered why people invest huge amounts on great gaming PCs and console, just to buy a cheap and quite sad display! Even though everything you play will be seen on that display and will play a part big part in how you perceive a game. Know all to many that spend like 2000$ on a gaming rig and then spend around 120$ of them on a cheap display.
I have a Version 1 Switch, the Mario Odyssey edition, so the OLED in my opinion is a worthwhile upgrade. Especially since I do play undocked a decent amount. I'd say about 40% of my play time is undocked, maybe slightly less, but I'd still get to enjoy the benefits of it.
I should upgrade too, my switch is one with the XAW at the start of the model number so I have the worst battery life and my right joy con analog stick grip came off forcing me to buy new joy cons, even though I play in docked most of the time, when I get a new switch, I will get the OLED, the normal switch is $469 and the OLED is $539, it is only a $70 difference so I think when I get a new switch I will get the OLED, but I will have to grind in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for 90 hours over like a week to get my progress back, or I could transfer my account over to the OLED when I get it.
GameStop was having a trade-in deal. They gave me $260 in store credit for my V1 model Switch. I only ended up paying $100 for the Switch OLED. Definitely a nicer upgrade imo
V1 = moddable launch model? hmm. I'm conflicted. I feel like it should have been worth the price of a new one. It's a limited good and the modding stuff will only get better and better over time.
already upgraded few days ago and its worth it! since i play mostly handheld, i really love the bigger screen. it does make a different experience from playing V2 or V1
i just got an oled after having the normal switch for a long time and it is sooo much better to play handheld and tabletop. i went from wanting to play docked most of the time to wanting to play undocked just to use the screen. if youre thinking about going from the normal switch to an oled and play a decent amount of undocked, i highly recommend it
I don’t think it’s a good upgrade for everyone but with my situation where I have a day 1 switch that’s absolutely struggling every time I turn it on, I’m definitely getting one!
I can’t compare between both of the switches because I’ve never had one before but after seeing all these new features I think the switch oled worth it
I currently own an Mario Edition Switch Whenever they release an OLED model with all-red shell and joycons, then I might upgrade. Love the OLED and addressed design issues, but... aww.. mario special edition ;-;
These videos are so awesome I watched so many of his videos last year to find out what to get for my switch and I still watch them a lot great content keep up the good work Kevin!
I feel better about the switch not being as secure on the dock because I believe it'll help scratch the screen less. Tighter fit guarantees it scratches
I have the original vita with OLED. Once you go OLED, you have a hard time going back. It might not be as big from sd to hd, probably more like hd to 4k but of course different, it's not the resolution, but display type. There's just nothing as nice as OLED that I know of anyway. It's simply a beautiful display.
As someone who owns both OLED and LCD TVs, I believe both have their pros and cons. I like my 65 inch B7P LG OLED TV for Movies, some TV shows, Switch docked gaming and PS4 Pro. I like my Samsung 75 inch Q90T for PS5, Xbox Series X and PC for gaming in HD and Watching some movies and sports.
Since the pandemic, the entire handheld centric nature of the switch became less important for me. The OLED model will be fun to have so I can finally mod my day 1 model, but a memory bandwidth bump would have been more welcome.
@@kirin1230 Depends on the game and the circumstance within the game. Switch has basically 2 bottlenecks; the CPU and the memory bandwidth, while the GPU part is relatively good. It mostly struggles in games that relies heavily on data streaming, which is why they make the textures look so low-res in open world games. It also performs poorly in cpu-heavy tasks, why good-optimized games puts more general-purpose calculations on the gpu.
You are right, memory bandwidth is the major bottleneck of the current Switch design. I have two videos on my channel covering that in some way. Xenoblade 1 and 2 cannot render at 720p native resolution with stable 30fps unless you overclock the RAM. I also applied some CPU and GPU OC to get rid of all performance spikes, but it isn't as necessary. Nintendo's main goal for the next Switch or a future revision should be on improving memory bandwidth by increasing the bus size or have more memory altogether. Reduce the node another time, to 12nm or 8nm and because of the increased efficiency, overclock the CPU to at least ~1300/1400MHz and GPU to ~800/900MHz and it will be a monster. Still not enough to compete with a full fat PS4 but well enough for a handheld for some more time.
You've done a phenomenal job with these videos on the OLED model. I love my Switch that I got this past Christmas, but if you consistently watch TH-cam videos on the Switch, it's easy to get caught up on wanting to have the new shiny thing all the time. I was considering the OLED, but your videos really helped me look at the decision as logically as possible. You covered all the bases, and you've got a new subscriber. Keep up the good work
@@salvadorespinosa735 Noled so far. I want it, but it's not necessary. Might get it this year as a reward to myself if I can accomplish a few personal/professional things.
@@dyllangames3592 The option is in TV settings and works only with a docked Switch, because docked Switch cannot turn off a TV the same way it can turn off its own screen. It has nothing to do with the display technology used in Switch.
I play my switch mainly undocked, and going from the first model to this one feels like a decent jump. Better battery, bigger screen, more vibrant screen, really nice white accessories; I'd say it's worth it. Still kinda regret not getting the Steam Deck instead though.
Honestly though i recommend having both( if you can afford it obviously. And if not save up, i am) the steam deck will have steam games that probably wont come out on switch for a long time or even at all. I want a lot of games on the steam library but dont want a 1,000 dollar gaming pc. The steam deck is perfect for that
You should have sold it for $300 launch edition Switch is valuable because it’s hackable via hardware, which means no matter how many software update Nintendo releases it cannot be patch since it’s a hardware exploit..
I'm planning on buying this maybe next year or so.. since I just bought my V2 Switch last year and it still pretty much brand new to me. The new model looks really cool, but I don't think it's worth the upgrade if you already have one.
@@solosworld9365 maybe i'll wait til people review the '1-year after using oled' kind of video to see if there's any cons after using it for awhile.. coz i've seen video of oled has green backlight problem when using dark theme background 🤷🏻♀️
I ended up making out like a bandit on this upgrade. Showed up to GameStop at 8:30am on the 8th, bought a white OLED model, brought it home, transferred the user data over, and brought back my launch model Switch for $260, which makes the cost of the upgrade roughly $100. I cut that down a bit by trading in a couple of games I no longer played, bringing my total cost down to around $50
The improved body seems like it will resist cracks on the top. On my day one switch, I can basically peel apart the back piece and get a peek at the internals. The Oled looks like just one big piece, except for under the stand.
I have an oled vita and two led vitas. The oled screen doesn’t hold up as well in the long run. But it did look better. Sticking with my Mario red edition switch
Outstanding video. I own a switch lite, I never owned a regular switch so I don’t have a frame of reference. I love all the features of the dedicated all in one body design with the Dpad so I may just stick with what I have.
I play a looooot of Smash Ultimate with my classmates during lunch or study hall or whatever, so the improvements are honestly very exciting to me. Still torn on whether to get the White or Black dock version, since I use the Splatoon-colored joy-con…
Burn in is not an incremental thing. If you're playing for a humanly possible amount of time (single figure hours) then really dont worry. Turn it off and you've basically reset your burn in timer. Burn in is the kind of thing that happens to monitors in train stations. Screens that display the same ui day in day out for years. Chill peeps.
I have an LG oled tv and it’s fine and has no screen retention or dead pixels. Oled tech has upgraded over years and it’s frankly the best picture quality you can find for the mainstream consumer market. I played odyssey via oled tv and it was absolutely beautiful. Just take the right steps, if you know you’re not gonna play anymore just turn the screen off/sleep mode. HUD’s and displays aren’t really a major problem. Screen retention is real but the tech is really good at preventing it from happening
I was scrolling the comments to find this comment lol. I knew someone would notice the switch getting burn in while he's talking about avoiding burn in 🤣🤣
It's not gonna happen in 10 minutes. My OLED phone screen got burn in but only after using it for like 8 hours a day on Google Maps with the screen constantly on, for a year or two (I drive for Uber and Lyft).
Had to sell my V2 last year cause the Pandemic. I ended up getting a Lite and I do love it, however Switch is my primary console these days (the joy of being nearly 30) and so I definitely want a "dedicated" Switch again. Oled is that model and I'll be getting it for sure. It really wasn't designed to force you to throw away your Launch model or V2 Model. It is just a QOL improvement to Switch like we've seen Nintendo do with their GBA, DS, and 3DS models. So it is more like a 3DS XL than it is let's say a Ps4 Pro or Xbox One X.
Thanks for the review and warning about burn-in, that screen does look beautiful indeed, I wish Nintendo could have given some love to performance too, which makes me wonder if actually a perf upgrade might come soon, I wouldn't like to upgrade to this version if next year will be a new one, and I see nobody talking about this point.
They probably knew that with supply and manufacturing delays they wouldn't be abke to get enough new components for an upgraded Switch, so they just used what they already had as far as cpu chips and stuff. They were probably planning more of an upgrade until covid happened and they had to settle for the few upgrades they did make. The Switch Lite came out 2.5 years after the original, then the OLED is coming out 2 years after the Lite. Maybe in another 2 years they'll release a truly upgraded final version.
@@HarmonicWave This sounds reasonable, and yeah, maybe that was the reason we didn't get a fully upgraded final version this time :(, I've been stuck with my Lite waiting for the new Switch version, but meh, I don't want to wait any longer, I guess this should make it at least for 2 more years hoping you are right win your forecast.
i was against the oled screen as much as i love the look of it cuz my vita got burn in, however i pulled the trigger and traded in my v2 switch for the oled only cuz i really wanted the biggest screen made and that gorgeous screen, ill try be careful to avoid burn in. tests have shown it takes alot to get the switch to burn in enough for me to risk it. downloading games now looking forward to bball on big gorgeous screen
oled all the way that screen is too good to turn down. great video as always and thank you for covering the burn in and giving some reasurrence to people.
The main reason I upgraded was the condition of the outside, aswell as the port not working for a dock. I was always annoyed that my switch was like that, so when I got the opportunity I got it. Haven’t looked back since.
I think that while the burn in concern is valid, it’s less of an issue than it’s made out to be. I’d imagine the user base that uses a standard (not Lite) Switch in handheld mode for 5-6 hours a day is very very small.
Burn in isn’t gonna be an issue. A dude left his switch running on the same screen for I think like 800 or something hours and there was very minimal burn in. Regular use will not happen.
Love how he had a entire conversation about your system on a static screen for a long time gaining burnin while doing the exact same thing in the background
I still think that a Switch Pro is coming out… I’ll wait for that. My current Switch is only a year and a half old, and it works just fine. Thanks for this video.
$400 is a lot of money for me right now, but with the awesome library available to Switch players and this newly improved version its easy to consider purchasing one. Thank you for this review!
One question about accessories, there’s the ones that rely on the screw holes in the consoles for the settling down or to have an extra gripping surface on the main unit, does the screw placements in the back of the unit still in the same places or they changed it around as well? It’s something minor that came to mind a bit ago that probably nobody will care about but I’m curious nonetheless
Mmmmmmm. Cant tell. It's either the same or further apart. Maybe look up the bottoms of both and check that out? I sold my other switch so I can't help much more
Just upgraded from my V2. Seeing them side by side in person was staggering. The screen size is significantly different. I only play hand-held so that matters to me. Only spent $195 after my trade-in and the GameStop Pro discounts.
I actually have a good reason for purchasing it. I had mine since launch, and the fan died some months ago, so the OLED came around just in time. No more keeping a fan blowing over it.
I have an oled preordered even though I have a v2. I like to play handheld primarily so having a bigger and better screen just makes sense. Gonna keep my v2 for my son to use
I have a launch model system, and do have the OLED model pre-ordered. However, I’m on the fence on whether to keep the pre-order, because I can’t help but think there has to be a more powerful version coming sooner rather than later. I would really like the sharper, larger OLED screen, but just don’t know. The Steam Deck with my massive games library there also looks pretty good. I just don’t want to get the OLED model, only to see an actual performance increase model six months to one year later.
The OLED model is a significant enough upgrade that I doubt a more powerful model is any closer than another 2 years. They'll want to sell the OLED for a while before they bother releasing anything newer.
I really enjoyed your review! I have a day 1 switch and the battery life can barely handle an hour of handheld gameplay when I do things like Dynamax raids in Shield. I have been debating if it is worth it to upgrade and I think I'm sold now! Also, that white dock is just beautiful!
Target is going to be taking way too long to get my OLED to me. Doing a final SD card upgrade with 1 tb as well so this is going to take forever to get all my games on it.

I preordered the launch switch and I played it constantly until my ex stole it, so I decided to treat myself and get the OLED and it is night and day. I wish there were more media apps to take advance of the portability and nicer screen.
I think u mean pixel shift like with the oled tvs? Pixel refresh is nice but it’s not meant to be run too frequently and might actually harm the panel. Also I think those features will only work on larger screens because of the limitation on the size of the switch
@@JSamsung12 yeah I meant pixel shift and that's not entirely true. Samsungs phones have had thos feature for their always on displays for years. It's definitely doable. They could have had the UI load up in a slightly different position on each load up.

I hate how Nintendo has now made THREE Switch revisions that help improve the handheld experience (better battery, smaller form factor + dpad, OLED screen + better stand), but NO revisions that improve the docked experience, when I 99% of the time play docked...
@@inranglhood60 I don't necessarily need *massive* improvements. 4k upscaling built in would be great, but even a docked only parallel to the Switch Lite that was also $200 would be good to make a true budget console. Maybe that form factor would make it easier for stuff like more ram, more hard drive space built in, etc, not really that hard to do, comparable to the redesigns needed for the revisions we already got.
The people who buy a switch are looking for the portability mostly, the games play a decent, but not huge part. The ability to play stuff in bed like you would on a phone, but with actually good games is a big selling point. If you play in docked "99% of the time" Then you might as well buy a xbox series s.
@@IronIsKing but all modern consoles have remote play which enables you to play on any device. I play my Xbox and PS5 on my iPad at 1080/60 all the time. The portability argument doesn't work any more for Nintendo, it's practically a portable Xbox 360 and like an old console, it's really showing it's age.
@@inranglhood60 Eh. Game still runs docked 1080p 60fps perfectly fine for like every game except hyrule warriors. People act like the nintendo switch needs a newer chipset because it runs a single game at awful performance.
I switched back from the Lite to the regular Switch because I wanted to play on TV again. But even if I didn't have the regular Switch now and was going to buy one, I would go with the regular one and not OLED. Here in germany, the OLED costs ~90€ more that's in my opinion just not worth it. For those 90€ I can get the Pro Controller and a AAA game and are good to go, compared to only having the console and nothing else. OLED burn it would only be a slight concern but also adds up. I would always thinking about hoping that I won't face this issue as soon as I play a game for a longer time. And btw, opening menus etc. WON'T help preventing burn in. That's not how burn in on OLEDs work.
Love my switch lite, felt it was a much better hand held and didn't have enough HDMI's for a standard switch... Shame I have repetitive strain injury though and so considering buying a larger switch. Hopefully the larger size will be better for me.
I am upgrading my Switch to OLED literally the day of or the day before the new Pokémon comes out and I am beyond excited! I am gifting my brother my OG Switch so we can hunt Pokémon together and he can finally enjoy some Nintendo!
I got an oled a couple months ago and it was a big upgrade from my V1 switch. I don't need to have it plugged in constantly. The backplate feels good and since I play handheld most of the time it was a good upgrade.
@Blue my white oled? Yes its still working well we actually got the Pokémon edition for Christmas so we now have the v1 switch, switch lite, and the 2 oleds and they all work great still. However, the switch oled has a similar issue as previous models. A brand new switch out of the box has a great chance of having slightly loose joycons. I think it's called wobble, as in if you shook your switch lightly you feel the joycons shift a little. It's not super tight and solid. I thought it was just my V1 getting old but even the new ones have it. There's a way to diy fix it but it involves tape or actually replacing some parts with aftermarket parts made to be better. Just wanted to give you a heads up. A one piece case also easily fixes that issue if you play handheld. The oled screens have no issues or burn in so that's my only complaint. I don't know why they haven't designed it better. It's my pet peeve for some reason.
@Blue oh yeah I remember that being a big concern about them using an oled screen when it first came out. I'm pleasantly surprised and relieved. maybe many years from now they'll fail but so far so good. Also lucky! Lol I know it's not all of them...I also collect joycons (3rd party & official), thumb grips, and cases so i make do with it. Some might say I have a problem and my oled doesn't need to change outfits regularly but I really do love the switch. Excited to find out what's next for it, maybe a pro? 🤞
the screen on the older switches got scratched because plastic is a soft material it can be damged even by your finger nails. but glass is a much much harder material it won't be scratched by plastic nor any metal. on the mohs hardness scale glass is 6-7, metals are 4-4.5, plastics are 2-3. on the downside when something is less scratchable then it's more brittle so be careful when dropping it.
I traded my lite in for the oled model but with coupons and trade ins paid 70 bucks out of pocket. Noticable difference in the screen when playing Dread colors are more vibrant and crisp than my regular switch.
Already pre-ordered the OLED from the OG Switch. I think the changes are enough to justify an upgrade. Got the white. Really sad about the accessory issues though.
Skull & Co has a new grip for the Switch OLED that looks very similar to the Satisfye grip and has interchangeable grip sizes. What other accessories are you looking to use?
I’m starting to switch from PlayStation to Nintendo, and this guide was very helpful on deciding which switch to buy over the other. A lot of other reviews were not as detailed as yours and I appreciate the depth that you went into to bring the differences out. Thank you :)
Ive been rocking with my white box switch for almost 3 years and it still is fantastic and tbh i do notice the battery life but its just enough where im fine with it
The way you described the question of upgrading is top level. You let every other person to make any decision they wish to make, and not feel bad about it, because in reality the really shouldn’t.
I’m just a little confused. Why would Nintendo make the oled switch design more driven towards hand held (For Example: Way better kick stand, larger screen and more vibrant display) If playing in hand held will damage it over time. I was really looking forward to the oled but I’m afraid I’m going to have burn in because playing on a tv isn’t a option for me :(
I just recently got the Switch V2, not the OLED, and I love it. Im already used to switching from OLED to an LCD screen already since my gaming laptop has an lcd screen while my phone and my tv are OLED, so using the non OLED Switch V2 in handheld mode has still been a very enjoyable experience for me and the lcd screen doesn’t bother me one bit. The lack of an ethernet port on the V2 dock also isn’t an issue for me since I don’t use an ethernet cable anyways. Also, in my country, the OLED switch costs $100 more instead of only $50 in the US. For that, I don’t find the price hike justified. Instead, I was able to use that $100 to purchase Breath of the Wild, Smash Bros Ultimate, and a carry case when I bought my Switch, and I still have some cash spare for another Switch game.
I have a v2 as well and the size diff isnt that big a deal. Theres gotta be tons more improvements and no risk of burn in for me to think its worth it. I dont even know what ethernet is lol
@@cr5490 There's actually very little chance of burn-in on the OLED model, Bob of WulffDen proved that by leaving a Switch OLED plugged in, turned on and on the same image for 6 months straight (auto brightness off, max brightness). There was only very little burn-in that it was basically imperceptible. But other than that yeah, the Switch OLED is still basically the same Switch, same internal specs, only the screen got an upgrade and the kickstand. It's still very hard for me to justify the price difference, especially a $100 price difference from where I'm from. And the ethernet in simple terms is a cable which you can use to connect a device directly to your WiFi router for better connection. Most gaming laptops have an ethernet port for this purpose, as well as game consoles. But it is unnecessary unless you are a streamer and playing competitive games where you may need a little bit of a boost in your internet connection.
You know, it's actually not too bad. Sometimes even the small upgrades might make the bigger difference. I would've got one, but because I share the Switch, I don't think it would be worth it.
Yeah that’s gonna be next year and it probably will be like 400$ so yeah fuck that I can’t wait any longer I bought Mario kart and tennis in anticipation for this console over 2 months ago and I want my OLED SWITCH NOW
Greate vid Kevin. As for burn-in on OLED, you are 1000% correct. I have a 60" OLED LG and when the screen is a certain color (orange background) I can see hearts from BOW. Also, I use an Apple TV and made the mistake of using a picture slide show template that has static black bars between the pics, and those can be seen too. And when you watch this slide show it is not obvious that the bars are static given the pics scroll between them. Bottom line, as you have stated just be careful when playing one game for a very long time, e.g., hours at a time over several days/weeks. And I will not be upgrading to the Switch OLED for the same reasons you have pointed out, and the fact that I use my current system in dock mode anyway. Thanks again! Jam4Mad TTM
Nice wrap-up! The question, over here, needs to be re-phrased to: is it worth the additional $150 to get to OLED instead of the regular Switch 😭

I just got a used regular switch, and if u are a super gamer, then the oled maybe for you. If they didn’t run out of the oled, I would have gotten that one. But I’m glad I didn’t because, I don’t play games much, I want to, but build up to it. To me the reg switch, seems like a good size.
My day 1 switch started to crap out on me and I just bought the oled (splatoon 3 edition) for $300 and so far I really love the improvements they’ve made like the vibrancy from the OLED and the new kickstand too
Then there's no real upgrade. The output is still the same. The big upgrade is when your playing handheld so you get the bigger and better OLED screen. For docking and playing on your TV at home, it's basically the same system.
I’m kind of wondering if playing a game like Baldo for instance, if I change the screen from vivid to standard if that will reduce my chances of any type of burn in?
I got lucky and bought a used OLED one a week ago for $150. Barely used. Maybe used might be a good choice especially if you already have a normal switch
I just bought a switch monster Hunter bundle. I like the design they added to it. OLED doesn’t mean much to me especially when I’m spending most of my gaming on a high quality TV monitor. I only care about OLED for things I am going to spend my time looking at all day (ex. Phone).
I have a 2017 Switch and even tho the battery is not what it used to be, I will order a new one and the problem is fixed. I consider it to be a total waste of money even if I am a huge fan of OLED screens. The fact that it plays the same, that games will lag again, joycon drift is still there, makes it a big no for me even if I was super excited when it was first announced and I was so close to pre order it. But again that's just me. The screen will burn in for sure if you keep the brigthness higher than 50% and all the games have UI elements that are always there. Thanks a lot for helping me decide 100% if I should buy it or not and thanks for the great work and giving us so many detalied videos about this ahed of it's time. I will add 120 euros more and change my old PS4 Pro with PS5.
I currently have a Mario red & blue switch, and I just picked up an OLED last week. I absolutely love the OLED and I bought it specifically for Metroid dread. I usually play it in “tabletop” mode and noticed a huge difference in screen and display size. I have really bad vision and I have no problem using my OLED this way. I love it! Looks amazing and feels way sturdier than the regular switch
I also have a Mario edition one. Should I really buy the oled? I’m most definitely not selling the Mario edition one because it’s limited. But I have no idea
@@oa72204 I have both and I can say the OLED is wayyyy nicer, it’s not even a comparison. The games look way better on screen and the durability of the OLED seems to be much higher. The system feels a lot sturdier and heavier than the Mario switch. I love both of my switches but the OLED is better by leaps and bounds
@@yaboyreege7158 let me rephrase that. I actually have the oled but it’s just sitting around I didn’t open it yet lmao. But it’s worth the extra $400 you think?
@@oa72204 yea for sure. I think the prices of them will just continue to rise too as they are limited and the only place they can be found is eBay and sites like that. That’s up to you tho dawg
As someone who never owned a Switch and hadn't had a Nintendo since the Wii I decided I was finally in the market for a Switch. Being that it's 2022 I originally thought the OLED was a no brainer. Then I thought well it's not really necessary so I'll just get the regular Switch and I like the option that the regular had the grey joy cons...then ultimately I decided on the Lite and I absolutely love it. Not having 1080p or OLED doesn't seem to matter so much with Switch games. They seem perfectly fine to me.
8:04 this is not how a OLED display works it still uses a light behind the panel the pixels simply change their opacity to let more or less light through. in-fact a lcd display is most of the time less battery intensive as it uses local dimming zones that change the intensity of the backlight
I don’t think I’m gonna upgrade. But if you don’t have a switch yet and want to get a switch, I say pay the extra $50 for the oled switch.
I also don’t think I’ll be upgrading. Even though I mainly play in handheld mode I think the screen is fine on the old switch. I would also have to buy another satisfy grip since I really enjoy using one,
same but its because i really dont need it now. i can wait a few years for the switch pro
@@mikepotapa5773 but you can sell both your current switch and grip and them forever have a better experience with the new switch everytime you play
Likewise, I have the v2 and it’s docked most of the time. It’s nice to see OLED happen, but we have the Lite for portable and now OLED for premium portable. Where’s a model for the docked users? 2 portable orientated models doesn’t make much sense.
Probably $100 after tax yes
Im upgrading from my day one switch to an oled this friday, and i think the thing that ill notice most is the BATTERY lol. the battery on my day one switch is TERRIBLE now. it goes from 100 to 80 percent after only 15ish minutes off the dock. yeah im looking forward to that battery lol
not much of an upgrade at all
Same here buddy!
So do u use it while charging?
Gamestop's offering $200 in trade-in credit if you can't get more than that elsewhere.
@@PlazDreamweaver They are???
@@PlazDreamweaver Seriously?
Bigger screen does look nice.
Maybe this was just too obvious to mention, but the biggest factor when deciding if the OLED is worth the upgrade is often you play in handheld mode! Because other than the new color dock and ethernet port, this system is 100% geared towards handheld users, and not the people who play the Switch primarily docked.
The OLED system is kind of like a Pro Switch Lite
Thank for this explanation because that what I wanted to know. I'll be playing it primarily docked on the tv. I was on the fence which to get and I just purchase the regular one on Black Friday. Thank you!
They then should have geared the joysticks also to handheld users. That spring-noise on my oled is driving me crazy
@@IanPChase NOt sure what you mean
Yeah it's perfect for me because I don't like playing docked that much
I haven't owned a Nintendo device since the Gameboy Color, so I've been looking at lots of content to help me make a decision. Your Switch OLED coverage is second to none. I love your style and presentation. Can't wait to see more, and to get my order in Friday! 👍

The only reason you should worry about burn-in is if both of these apply:
1) You mainly play one game, particularly a retro game, due to its likely static UI elements
2) You exclusively play in handheld mode, for hours on end, every single day, for years
There are folks who play their Switch like this, and they should avoid the OLED model, frankly, as there is a good chance they’ll deal with image retention.
Otherwise, anyone else? You’re fine. Seriously. If you play your Switch a couple hours a week and switch back and forth between handheld/TV mode like I do, you will never get close to getting burn-in.
Brightness level you are playing in handheld also factors alot in any OLED display the higher the brightness the more "Burn" your are doing in your screen with static images..
burn in should not be a thing at all, at thiis point OLED displays need to be fixed and made more resistant to burn
I got a Vita too its my forst OLED device. What games you play on the Vita may I ask?
Seeing all these people talking about the Vita brings a tear to my eye. It’s enough to make a grown man cry 😭
My Vita has a menu burned in from the previous owner but weirdly I like that
Pre ordered a Switch OLED a month ago, can't wait for this Friday!!!
Easily upgrading. The Vita was my favorite handled of all time until the Switch OLED was announced. It makes that much big of a difference.
I game on a LG OLED 55inch that is 120hz with Gsync so don't speak for all PC gamers.
how's the docking station and console? Do you notice if its sturdier and docks better?
Agreed
console ? Not sure ab 4k yet and huge hertz yet but pc for sure.
Stick to 720p 25fps family games or go get a job instead of crying about how people spend their money.
Lol 😂 you got fucked real good by them no rubber
V1 = moddable launch model? hmm. I'm conflicted.

i just got an oled after having the normal switch for a long time and it is sooo much better to play handheld and tabletop. i went from wanting to play docked most of the time to wanting to play undocked just to use the screen. if youre thinking about going from the normal switch to an oled and play a decent amount of undocked, i highly recommend it
I don’t think it’s a good upgrade for everyone but with my situation where I have a day 1 switch that’s absolutely struggling every time I turn it on, I’m definitely getting one!
Did you get one?
I can’t compare between both of the switches because I’ve never had one before but after seeing all these new features I think the switch oled worth it
You should get the oled sense your a first time buyer and because it has More features
It probably is but only if you will play it a lot on handheld mode, cause if most of your playtime will be docked, then just get the regular one

Whenever they release an OLED model with all-red shell and joycons, then I might upgrade.

Completely agree. More RAM would’ve fixed most of the issues were seeing
@@Spazza42 Is the RAM currently what's bottlenecking the switch? I agree we need a hardware revision, but would a ram increase genuinely be enough?
@@jimhultqvist2539 yea I wouldnt use the switch for open ports, unless it's like borderlands/BioShock type of games
You've done a phenomenal job with these videos on the OLED model. Burn in is not an incremental thing.
If you're playing for a humanly possible amount of time (single figure hours) then really dont worry.
Turn it off and you've basically reset your burn in timer.
Burn in is the kind of thing that happens to monitors in train stations.

One of the biggest differences is the fact, that if you drop this, its broken. The oldeer switch is more "sturdy" So better for children :D

Thats awesome bro I hope you enjoy your oled but why did you have to sell your V2?
@@HarmonicWave This sounds reasonable, and yeah, maybe that was the reason we didn't get a fully upgraded final version this time :(, I've been stuck with my Lite waiting for the new Switch version, but meh, I don't want to wait any longer, I guess this should make it at least for 2 more years hoping you are right win your forecast.

oled all the way that screen is too good to turn down. great video as always and thank you for covering the burn in and giving some reasurrence to people.

I actually have a good reason for purchasing it. I had mine since launch, and the fan died some months ago, so the OLED came around just in time. No more keeping a fan blowing over it.

They'll want to sell the OLED for a while before they bother releasing anything newer.
and we're still waiting haha
And you couldn’t of been more wrong lmfao
I've got the oled for 2 days now and I'm in love. The screen is such an upgrade
I had my Oled since August and just now noticed because you pointed it out that I wasn’t on vivid mode and now things are much better
I really enjoyed your review! I have a day 1 switch and the battery life can barely handle an hour of handheld gameplay when I do things like Dynamax raids in Shield. I have been debating if it is worth it to upgrade and I think I'm sold now! Also, that white dock is just beautiful!
Same man
Target is going to be taking way too long to get my OLED to me. Doing a final SD card upgrade with 1 tb as well so this is going to take forever to get all my games on it.
1tb ????? i cant help but feels thats way too overboard how could you ever even get close to filling that up
Yeah for real mine says it will be delivered a week after launch. Hopefully it gets here sooner.
@@forthewin3910 mine says that too, I think that’s the estimated date cause they don’t have them yet, fingers crossed it updates when it ships to launch date.
@@cheekybananaboy3361 Games like FFX, Hatsune Miku, and Resident evil games eats up a lot of gb. I've been using 512 and 400 for a while now and with the sale of just $100 for the 1tb san disk I figured this is way more of a benefit.
@@cheekybananaboy3361 do you play more than 2 switch games? some are HUGE. JUST DANCE IS 30GB alone. smash is like 17gb. fortnite is almost 20gb with updates and ect
My red box switch is only a year old, but I play in tabletop mode w/ a pro controller 99% of the time. That OLED screen and improved kickstand are looking too good to pass up and I've been wanting a 2nd switch anyway!
I have an original PS VITA with an OLED screen. Over a decade later, there's been no burn in on the screen.
I preordered the launch switch and I played it constantly until my ex stole it, so I decided to treat myself and get the OLED and it is night and day. I wish there were more media apps to take advance of the portability and nicer screen.
No pixel refresh is a major issue imo. Having UI on the screen for hours on end will definitely lead to burn in.
@@jamyjet yeah totally see what u mean but this is Nintendon’t we talking about lol. But I’m sure it’s a cost saving thing. Ppl already crying about $50 increase. Not to mention Samsung flagships are much more expensive than the switch and also they’ve been early adopters of OLED. I’m not too worried since my vita looks good even after all these years
I hate how Nintendo has now made THREE Switch revisions that help improve the handheld experience (better battery, smaller form factor + dpad, OLED screen + better stand), but NO revisions that improve the docked experience, when I 99% of the time play docked...
That would require Nintendo to spend lots of money because it would involve major hardware/software upgrades... That's not happening.
Get a saitsfye grip for the lite. Ergonomic, prevents carpal tunnel, etc
Got hori pad
I am upgrading my Switch to OLED literally the day of or the day before the new Pokémon comes out and I am beyond excited! I am gifting my brother my OG Switch so we can hunt Pokémon together and he can finally enjoy some Nintendo!
I’m upgrading from the lite to the switch oled, and I’m excited to have a much larger
The OLED switch doesn't actually last longer. What you are experiencing is a brand New Lithium-Ion battery vs a worn-down one.
I got an oled a couple months ago and it was a big upgrade from my V1 switch. I don't need to have it plugged in constantly. The backplate feels good and since I play handheld most of the time it was a good upgrade.
Is it still working
@@Emily-lh6em oh thank goodness i thought oled screens don't last much i just got one for Christmas also i don't seem to have loose joy cons yet.
@@Emily-lh6em i forgot to ask will the battery get ruined if i leave it on the dock with Ac Adapter all day all night?
the screen on the older switches got scratched because plastic is a soft material it can be damged even by your finger nails. but glass is a much much harder material it won't be scratched by plastic nor any metal. on the mohs hardness scale glass is 6-7, metals are 4-4.5, plastics are 2-3.
on the downside when something is less scratchable then it's more brittle so be careful when dropping it.
Everyone milking the shit out of this OLED where there is not much to say 🤣😂
I agree haha here comes the flood of videos about it all saying the same stuff
350$ is waste of time
I'd rather get an Xbox which last longer
I’m starting to switch from PlayStation to Nintendo, and this guide was very helpful on deciding which switch to buy over the other. A lot of other reviews were not as detailed as yours and I appreciate the depth that you went into to bring the differences out. Thank you :)
As much as I like my ps5 it gathers dust now I’ve got the Oled
Never had a switch before. Thanks to this video, just pre ordered a switch oled few days ago.. cant wait for it!
This burn in point is one of the best points made I’ve ever heard! Well done there!
What is the price point that you wouldn't feel is worth buying the OLED over the original Switch if it's someone's first Switch?
You know, it's actually not too bad. Sometimes even the small upgrades might make the bigger difference.
I would've got one, but because I share the Switch, I don't think it would be worth it.
I know there’s still a possibility of a Switch Pro coming out (maybe in 2 more years), Im really craving that OLED model
at this point we'll be seeing the succesor sooner than a "pro"
I just sold my switch for 200 and had some some other stuff to trade in. Literally paying. 50 bucks to get OLED. I’m happy with it
Yeah that’s gonna be next year and it probably will be like 400$ so yeah fuck that I can’t wait any longer I bought Mario kart and tennis in anticipation for this console over 2 months ago and I want my OLED SWITCH NOW
OLED has always been the way to go. I’m considering getting the OLED which will be my first Switch. That’s if I can actually get it on release lol
I'm thinking of selling my V2 Switch and purchasing an OLED. Pretty sure it will hard to find one for quite awhile though
You get one??how are you finding it
Very helpful thank you - i love how detailed and yet concise this was
I just upgraded last week and yeah its worth it
Greate vid Kevin.
To me the reg switch, seems like a good size.
nope
1:06, tried explaining this difference in size to my girl and she didn’t agree. 😔
Kevin thanks so much for all the updates on the OLED and all content!
My day 1 switch started to crap out on me and I just bought the oled (splatoon 3 edition) for $300 and so far I really love the improvements they’ve made like the vibrancy from the OLED and the new kickstand too
when he's talking about burn-in meanwhile his switch is just kept on in the background lol
Well tbf its pretty dark so it should be good
fax lmao
As someone who plays solely on my television and has my router in the other room, I am beyond psyched for this upgrade.
2:29 there you go
I got lucky and bought a used OLED one a week ago for $150.
12:38 for anyone wondering if you should upgrade your regular switch now that OLED has become readily available
