- I once had a grandaunt who had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills....
And I had a grandfather who spent three years here, helping his sister to build the coffee plant. It has been a dream for me to once visit her farm outside Nairobi in Kenya. A couple of months ago, my dream came through....
I was in Nairobi on holiday in 1974, drove my Landrover from Zambia, how I wish I’d known about Karen Blixen and her farm then the museum. Love the film Out of Africa.
Thank you so very much for showing us your great-aunt's home in Africa.
Her work has meant so much to me; her words have been a balm on my soul for many, many years.
My great grandmother always said that we are somehow related to Karen Blixen. But we havn't figured out how yet.
I'm from Denmark and my name is Thea Dinesen.
My mother is doing a lot of resurge on our family tree.

I have watched the film Out Of Africa umpteen times. The film is a poetry written on celluloid. I also read her book Out Of Africa during my Burma Holiday in 2005. Her book bear no relationship to the film. It only share the title. Then I visited her Nairobi home twice, when I went to Masai Mara, Kenya.. It was a sentimental journey for me.
She was an amazing woman
I just pulled Isak Dinesen's Last Tales off the book shelf this week to finally give it a read. She was one of my wife's favorite authors. Blixen's writing inspired her to go on safari to Kenya. Thank you for the video.
So glad she too Denys advice to write. I wAtched the movie. Still, her book is better. Thank you Karen for bringing Africa to us.❤
What a great aunt to have, & and somewhere special to have visited for you, Out of Africa the film is simply a masterpiece along with such films as the Piano & the English Patient.
My neighbour was once an elderly lady who born in India in the last days of the British Empire, her family moved to Africa, she was half blind & in a wheelchair when I remember her sitting catching the summer English sun, & would tell me tales of Africa & it would take her back, when she died her daughter said I could take an item if I wanted from her home, & I selected a wooden tea tray hand inlayed, Its just a fascinating period of History, my dream is to one day visit St Helena & the home where Napoleon spent his last days, thanks for sharing this video of Karens Bungalow

Wow, thank you for showing. This evoked wonderful childhood memories. I had been a fan of your grandaunt since I was a child after I stumbled upon her book, Out of Africa at the library. Said book made my imagination more vivid and it also inspired me to explore the world. Thanks once again.

This video brought back a lot of memories. I attended Karen Primary School. But I've never been to this particular place, though I've heard much about it. Must make a visit one day.

Welcome to Africa again and again. Karen was widely respected here in Kenya, as you may already know. The area where she resided was named after her and now Karen is the most prestigious residence in Nairobi with land rates costing as much as 1 million dollars for an Acre. The local press would have been glad to catch wind of your visit.

Kenya is beautiful. While there I was wondering who the Karen was all the buildings were named after. A couple years later while watching the movie, "Out of Africa" I found out. 🎉
If someone has seen the movie, it's not complete until you see this house and later finch hatons grave not far from here.

You can start your own dream in Kenya . Dual citizenship is allowed and foreigners can own ranches that house wildlife. A favourite place for that nowadays is Laikipia County.
Did the movie use the real house to shoot its scenes?

Apologies from Dinka, amazing Karen :( - in the movie it shows she sold all her possessions before leaving Kenya, how comes there are still possession in the house? I would like to visit her house in Demark one day, Dinka now is adopted son of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth so Dinka can go to Denmark, that wont be a problem. Dinka is also son of Kenya, so, he will go to Kenya again soon and make sure to visit Karen's home.
The house was converted into a museum in 1986. It is managed and curated by the National Museums of Kenya.
Quite a lot if not all the inventory of the house was donated by the film crew of "Out of Africa"
The are exact replicas of the original furniture etc.

Allegedly Its not. Correct me if I am wrong somebody - I read somewhere Karen the suburb in Nairobi is not named after Karen Blixen but after a diplomat's wife? and the House that they call Karen Blixen museum is not Karen Blixen's actual house but the house used in the movie as her house as it was the closest to a typical colonial house they could find for the movie that resembled one that she could have stayed at. I too perhaps fell for the legend and actually visited the 'Karen Blixen Museum' in Nairobi. Happy to be corrected though! as its a much better story if it were all true!

I just found myself in this compound this afternoon, and tour guide took us around.
There is nothing to celebrate about her, and those structures should be brought down. She came to africa to make fortune at the expense of the indeginous africans, and when her farm burnt to ashes, she ran away.
You should be a transit proud of your great aunt and the level of respect that she acquired in her lifetime while in 🇰🇪 Kenya...to name a township after her....other than native freedom fighter Jomo Kenyatta - to free Kenyavfrom the colonialists- there is only an explorer and the queen of england that have places named after them ( notice - nothing for Lord Delamier or any other colonialist ).
She was a great woman & her name will be spoken for so many generations to come. Yes, Africa- specifically Kenya REMEMBERS her.
Loved her adventurous spirit, her books, paintings & watch her movie ALOT. Because of her I have been to 5 African countries. I don't understand why she was NOT buried in the Ngong Hills with Denys - that is- from what she wrote - where her soul came alive.

Her generosity to the natives was her motto, she even thought africans were more sensitive and superior to the british colonialists who considered her a spy of the germans.
