If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear RIP young lady
Rest in peace, Netiporn. You died courageously protesting a law you thought was archaic. Your courage will live on. That you wanted to make your country a better nation through your beliefs and actions is brave and laudable. May ordinary Thais and those in power remember you and learn from you.
A young girl died because of her own free opinion.
That is just horrible.
Agree! How sad this world has become! 🙏
Thanks for your thoughtful commentry on the death of the young protester. So sad
She was fighting for freedom! Wow! How sad!
Yeah, just like your founding fathers from a tyrannical monarchy. Or did you not learn that in the shack that was your school?
I hope there is a public memorial service ( rally) in Bangkok for Bung. RIP
Starving yourself to death is not a good life choice.
Thailand is such a beautiful place, shame its ruined by sensitivity, complain about a restaurant.... Arrested, complain about the country.... Arrested... Complain about Royal Family.... Arrested its absolutely ridiculous.
This is why progress isn’t made compared to other countries. Officials and business owners cannot accept constructive criticism; thus, improvement stays stagnant.

Sad day for Thailand. Criticizing should not be a crime. May Buddha bless her.❤
It's sad that young people are jailed for their opinions
She broke a written law, and then violated her probation. This is how things work in most countries, regardless of what specific law was violated. There are things she could have done that would not have required her arranging her own death.
RIP "Bung". Condolences to her family and friends.
Thumbs up 👍 Tim
So sad 😞 about that young lady
Very sad that she ended up with the death penalty.
A waste of a precious young life.
She was forced to hunger strike? I hadn't heard that.
Very sad about the hunger striker!!! I notice that people no longer stand for the King in movie theatres. It's time to get rid of the Leges majest laws!
LONG LIVE THE KING!!!
Long live the king and Thai Royal family 🤪👍
Man!! Poor Bung all in the name of her PROTEST.
There should be a boycott of any tourism into Thailand until this ridiculous law is changed. Actually how many students are in jail now? So sad
Sadly we can't just boycott them....but I will say that the King is not happy about the law Lesse Majeste
So you are not going to Thailand if there's lese majeste law?
Brilliant! I'm sure your idea will go far - when 23 MILLION people are coming to Bangkok annually now. You better start working the phones & your email!
A death in custody is not something we want to hear. It throws suspicion on those responsible for her care. We only hope my suspicion is unfounded.
It's a high penalty to pay for your beliefs.
May she rest in piece.
The law prohibating people having an opinion is outdated and should be amended.RIP young lady.
Thank you Tim for your daily news round up from LOS. Enjoy keeping up with the daily stories every day 😊
Terrible waste of a life. Well covered, as was all of the news 👍

Hi Tim, after what you said about Koh Samui Airport yesterday and today and the prices of the tickets did you know that if you are a resident in Koh Samui you can get a residents card from Bangkok Airways Office (next to the Bangkok Hospital in Koh Samui) ? This entitles you to a 50% discount on all your flights in and out of the island. A good tip for any new residents on the island 👍
I’ll mention this tomorrow. Thanks
Good update as usual Tim, keep up the good work. I always look forward to getting the latest news
Once an “international airport” is created in Thailand, mass tourism will ruin the tranquility and beauty. My sympathy goes to those living in Hua Hin.
It was international before Covid with flights to KL several times a week. Our tranquility and beauty was not disturbed at all, but thanks for your thoughts 🤘

When I flew into NST airport in Dec, i noticed that they converted the airport from Domestic to international with a new terminal building and counters for immigration officers but as far as i can remember there is no international flights to NST airport.
Interesting news stories👍
Is performing five hours of CPR normal. Something seems fishy. Trying to cover there tracks. I would think they would give up after an hour or less.
They kept at it for 4 hours when my mom died. "Her pupils had not dilated" was the justification given at the time.
Have been hearing about upgrades to Hua Hin airport for 8 years i lived there and in Dolphin Bay.
RIP, young lady 🙏

Tim, I believe you misunderstand the law about the 0.2% THC. Which is understandable, as a lot of people did/do; it was confusing.
The 0.2% THC limit pertains only to extracts and concentrates, i.e. "hash oils," hashes, edibles, rosins, etc. Any preparation that concentrates it. Plain dried cannabis flower (buds) was not legally limited to the 0.2%. Only extracts, concentrates, and edibles.
I would urge you to check the Minister at the time and his quotes clarifying that misunderstanding.

I will be VERY happy when I don’t need to report on this story anymore. I’m getting a lot of unwanted heat and attention from this.
So do call all people who drink alcohol, drunks ?
Yes, quite a bit.
Junkie if you smoke a joint? Why so negative? Do you drink a beer sometimes, if so, are you a sad alcoholic?
The THC content of those modern californian strains of cannabis that are currently sold in Thailand can be up to 35% .... Yes 35% .. so yes a bit above 0.2%
Source? Yea the dispensary labels high THC because it sells. It’s pretty rare to see the thc threshold go above 30%.
All this boohooing about an herb.
Seems some old and in the way energy.
It is painful to watch these officials discuss the marijuana issue. My lord, why would it be so hard to classify it like booze and cigarettes, that is literally what ever other nation that legalized it did.
@@user-dj6hu9gq4t source.. just Google it.. I said "can be up to 35" not "are at 35" usually it is somewhere at 20+. When I was youn the weed we had was around 5 to 6%. So those new strains are insane.
Thailand should just restrict it to outdoor grown weed ..that would mitigate the whole thing.

Maybe not only because students "they had time on their hands" Tim. Maybe for some other good reasons - no ?
Sure. I don’t wish to diminish their cause. But the closure of the schools and universities did contribute to the quick growth of the pro-democracy movement.
I don't think Tim mentioned "only" Realistically, as there was more time, disgruntlement simmering for ages, (just or injust) will rise up when people have more time on their hands.

Cannabis laws should mirror alcohol laws. Drinkers dont just drink 3.2 % beer but much stronger choices if they desire like 190 proof, so cannabis THC % laws should be the same. I think they will never go back to low potency. There is not enough demand to support that industry.

You are spot on Tim about the Cambodians extraditing a Korean national wanted by Thai authorities for a crime allegedly committed in Thailand, to Korea. Very curious as I understand Thailand has an extradition treaty with Cambodia (and South Korea) not much respect there for the sovereignty of the King of Thailand and the laws enacted in his name. Why do students who have accomplished nothing think it is their role to protest everything. How about getting educated then then work for a living then change the world?
Many of us walked the streets with any number of signs in the 60s 70s and 80s. And hopefully the youth of the world will continue to do so. I attended so many protests I can’t even think what half of them were about. But they taught about rational thinking, standing up for something you believe in, and better ways to negotiate for what you want. I say bravo to any young protesters that go about their protests in a peaceful way.
It's being protesting is not an organic situation - it's an MK Ultra attempt to get people to ruin society. It creates division between the people and the overlords. The "pro test" is to see if people will fall for such ridiculous whining and moaning. If we gather together minds and heart, surely its possible to enact change. But no. We've been conditioned to hit the streets and beg, reinforcing that we are peasants and "they" are in control.
Please don’t stray into current international affairs in this post. It’s about ‘protesting’ as an act, not any specific protests

Hua Hin Airport - why is there no connection from Bangkok ? Some helicopter / small airplane for 8-10 passengers going back and forward should be an option. I checked a private airplane lease for the trip, but it was 200.000 baht for 4 people for a one way trip to Hua Hin from Bangkok. There must be some business opportunity there ? - or maybe there is, and I know nothing about it. I love Hua Hin, but simply do not want to spend 3-4 hours in car or train. I would be okay to pay 15-20.000 baht to get there within one hour from the center of BKK, and I think many others would be too.
A commercial jet would barely get off the ground when it would have to start descending again. Probably too short for the modern airline fleets. Would need a modern turbo prop plane perhaps.
Not many people will pay 20.000 baht to fly to Hua Hin. A bus ticket is 120 baht :)
After you and Steve recommended the Thai Movie Rocket Angels , I tracked it down and together with my Thai family sat down to watch. Our family are a mixed culture and have a lot of differing views, but on this one we are all agree, the film is absolute rubbish from start , I like to say to the finish, but we could not face seeing it through to the end. However I do enjoy your news reading . Although little less Phuket and bit more North East Thailand would be nice

While I'm not all for the government's move to categorize cannabis as 'soft drug', I can understand that decision. In many countries that have legalized or decriminalized cannabis, one of the first move was to lower the category of drug cannabis was in and to reduce the penalty to basically be similar to a misdemeanor. with fines or warnings The gradual steps taken helped people accept more freely the change to decriminalization that happened later on.
You know what... Maybe this is the right approach for Thailand instead of the drastic decision it took a couple of years ago.
Yeah, cranky old guys prefer to keep things like they were when THEY were young. Now, they may have liked different when they were young, dabbled and experimented a bit, not anymore...... so nobody else should either.
The longer I live around concentrations of old farts in Thailand, the more I realize there's no correlation between age and wisdom. Age just happens.
May she attain nibbana (nirvana).
Sorry Tim, I understood the Cannabis law, as it stands, restricted cannabis EXTRACTS at .02% THC (oil, hashish etc) not the flower itself. Many shops do not sell extracts for this reason (although many do and in excess of .02%)
Is that a law or a regulation? In other words, can this be changed administratively or does it require a vote?
I think you’ll find that information has been often misquoted but the original designation from the, then, public health minister is quite clear, including public clarifications from Anutin.
I would have thought the office of Narcotic Control Board, administered as part of the Public Health Ministry, would be able to change these regulations without a parliamentary vote, as was the case when the Public Health Ministry delisted cannabis from the Category 5 narcotics list back in 2022.
Yes, as they didn't get the law passed in 3 attempts these are regulations and can be changed by ministerial decree.
It's 0.2% not 0.02%. 0.2% is still very low, only 1/500. CBD oil in the States is allowed to be up to 0.3% THC.
Those levels are found in hemp. If the law passes, you can expect hemp cultivation to increase. In Thai "broccoli" is known as "gancha" (กัญชา), and hemp is called "ganchoang" (กัญชง). The plants given out after the law first passed were hemp.

Regarding the Marijuana reclassification.. it is backed by all the biggest farmers/producers for one simple reason.. MORE $$$. With now many small scale producers as well good old fashioned competition requires, the cost has come way down from its initial declassification and is currently much more fairly priced than it was earlier in the declassification. Most of the small shops are not just retail but have their own small farms as well. If the small shops die from recreational use being outlawed then the big farmers will win out big time!
