I own the ryzen 7 version of this laptop and it is super snappy. I actually love the keys (and i'm used to keychrom k4). The screen isn't the brightest, infact it's one of the lower nits scores I've seen on a newer laptop, but the color accuracy is phenomenal and important for me as I use it often for amateur photography with my Canon mirror-less. Gaming is easy and seamless, never seeming to drop below 60~ fps on most things I play. All in all I spent like 1200 bucks for the best laptop I've ever owned. The downsides are the screen brightness, speaker sound quality, short battery life, and loudish fans even when I'm just idling. But overall, I would buy this laptop again. Hopefully HP keeps pumping these out!
It was me waiting for this one to be released with a Ryzen, or buying the G15 Zephyrus as long as it's available in my area. I bought the G15, because it's an amazing machine (the 165Hz display is absolutely great) and it was the right decision, because when I checked that retailer's stock again, just a week later, that particular model wasn't even listed anymore.
Great review, thanks! I'm actually going to be replacing my old 2016 Omen 15 in about 2 weeks and your review convinced me to stick with Omen. @@JustinTechTips Welp.... Hp was going to take an entire month and a half to build what I wanted, so I went with a Gigabyte A7 X1 instead. It's worked out nicely though. For the same price as a maxed out Omen 15 I got my hands on a Ryzen 9 5900hx with an rtx 3070 (with 140w going to the card) on a 17 inch screen. I'd never heard of Gigabyte, but all of their product reviews were really good so I'm feeling pretty good about my purchase.

Especially when it comes to wattage. Is there any way to boost wattage? I assume throttling effects thermals and since this laptop handles it well it could handle a bit more wattage. Im probably never going to game without being plugged in to the wall
I just picked one of these up yesterday from Best Buy for $1600. Needed a PC and it just happened to be in stock and thought, I could get a laptop or prebuilt desktop with an i9 or 5900x with a 3080 for $3000+, or grab this(Omen 15) and wait a bit to build a desktop when prices drop. I need them 3080TIs or 3090s to drop in price so I can build the best desktop I possibly can for gaming and working. Not paying some scalper double, even if I have the money, I won't give them the satisfaction. Scalping will be punishable by death when I'm Supreme Overlord! Haha, thanks for this video. Helped me squeeze an extra 15ish% of performance out of my machine. "Helped" my dad build PCs 15 years ago, but only have very basic, ancient knowledge. I actually own this laptop and have been using it for about 3 months now. It is by far, the best laptop i have owned. and i have owned 5 not including this one. I have always had trouble with FPS and Cooling on all other Laptops due to power leaks and poor build qualities. This one has none of those issues. and i won't lie, it gets really loud, but i constantly wear Headphones so it is basically a non issue for me, as well as the keyboard and mouse, as i use a docking station and external peripherals. Also the screen looks amazing but i also hook up to my Terrible Viewsonic VG2455-2k monitor. 60hz and (oh god) 15ms response, and even there video is crisp and clear and at medium settings, on all but Raytracing in COD Coldwar, i can still get up to 113 FPS. which compared to previous machines is amazing. i just thought i would write this little blurb up for your viewers and they can hit me up anytime if they have any questions and you as well. thanks for your review and i look forward to watching your other vids.

@@JustinTechTips The Omen has the same specs as the one you have reviewed. I have only made one upgrade at this point which is a 2TB Mushkin Nvme Drive for games. as far as utilizing the Omen Gaming Hub, I have done the Intelligent Undervolting and it has kept me at an average 1.2 volts and still able to run all my current games at max settings when using the Laptop Screen and Medium and high settings when using the 2K monitor. Also to note, this is using the Discrete mode (GPU only, no hybrid with intel Graphics) The next upgrade will be to put in 32 GB of RAM, not that i need it all at once, but i do use my laptop to edit videos and Photoshop when i get a hair to do it. But the 16 GB is more than enough to run Most Graphic Intensive Games. Hope this helps you anyone else that reads thsi.
@based based It is a really good laptop and you get a second Nvme Slot which is great cause the 512GB is a bit lacking, especially if you have a larger game library.

It baffles me that so few people mention HDMI 2.1, which is one of the selling points of this laptop. MSI and Asus do not offer HDMI 2.1 and this is the only reason I did not go with them. It's nice to connect it to LG CX from time to time and not be constrained by HDMI 2.0

got one for college last summer not quite the exact same one you have shown in the video mine has the ryzen 7 5800h cput and the refresh rate of 165hz however everything is pretty much the same like the 16 gb ran ddr and the rtx3070 however mine doesnt perform near that well i get around 40-70 fps av 40-50 fps with cpu fans up to 90s and guessing around 50-70 external due to the exhaust leaving burn marks on my fingers and my omen hub lacking some of your software options like the graphics manager while doing minimal tasks its quite nice cold and quiet but when i do anything else everything else fall flat about this laptop and makes the showcases nothing more than a bold claim not sure whats wrong with my unit but any help is wanted and greatly appreciated
I have this laptop, I got this model open box for about 1400. Great deal IMO, it’s a beast but it is fucking loud during gaming. At full RPM the fans dissipate heat very well for such a small machine but sounds like a small jet engine. I usually wear headphones when gaming so I don’t notice it a lot, but it’s something to consider. I also came from a 17” laptop ( asus rog strix g17) and it’s something to get used to but with an external keyboard and mouse I just have to get used to the smaller screen size and much higher refresh rate
Oh wow, yeah you got a great deal with this at 1400 Snapps. It was one of the loudest fans I've heard but fans don't usually bother me too much. I'm always rendering on my Alienware at Full Speed so I'm used to a jet engine sound at my house constantly! The wife doesn't like it too much though lol
I use mine more like a desktop with an external monitor, with the horrible battery life that's all its really good for. Its great in that regard. A shame not to use the 300hz monitor though.

Yeah Prauffullit, unfortunately, I think pretty much every gaming laptop will underperform when unplugged as they use the direct power for all that extra processing.

So I recently found out that the Omen series don't have the typical battery charge limiter you'd see in other laptops, does that really matter these days or is the 80% rule for older gen laptops?

Hey! I have a question, in my country the laptop came with a 8 gb ram with 2933 mhz speed, if I want to add another one to dual channel it, must I add another 2933mhz speed one or can I add a 3200mhz one, since 2933mhz ram is hard to find these days.. thanks in advance
Hey do you usually record with a desktop mic or a headset? You probably will hear a little noise from the fans if you use your default laptop mic, just slightly with a desktop mic and not at all with a headset.
with every setting turned down to its absolute minimum, no lights, battery saver, 60fps, 20% screen brightness.... i got less than 3 hours, and i was literally just watching 1080p youtube videos. Honestly thats unacceptable IMO.
My laptop is Omen 16 i7 11 gen RTX 3060 and the only thing I've been weeping for is that it didn't come with an RGB keyboard 🤷🏻♂️ I didn't know there was any model of OMEN 16 that doesn't support RGB when I checked almost everything on the internet or else I'd been careful buying it😐
hello what is the AC watts.... my laptop is the omen 15 ek1xxx rtx 3070 32gb ram, the AC is 200 watts (came with the laptop), but when I play using the AC the laptop exit the games (crash) in about 10 seconds if is a demanding game (I switched to another laptop (same model) the owner had another one and let me get, and still has the same thing)... he said to buy a 230 watts AC , do you think this will work... I cannot change pc anymore.

Yeah the 3060 Legion 7 is showing some great benchmarks due to its high TDP. It is pretty crazy but it actually performs better than the HP Omen 15s 3070
Hey Andrea, it doesn't specifically have an option that says overclocking, but switching to discrete graphics mode and using intelligent undervolting options and setting the thermal profile to performance boosts the machine like overclocking would.
I got the AMD equivalent of this omen with the Ryzen 7 5800H at 100 wattage I don't think it makes a difference between the i7 and Ryzen 7. Unfortunately it was a custom and will take nearly 2 months to ship for some reason. I assume chip shortage and high demand are still going on. I guess the whole planet has been shopping for new laptops this past year. But HP seems notorious for slow manufacturing to shipping. I've found forums dating back almost a decade complaining about HP shipping.
@@JustinTechTips I meant to say I don't think it makes much of a difference between the i7 and Ryzen 7 due to the wattage. I'm more of a casual gamer so the low wattage isn't a big deal but is a draw back for a 3070 when gaming. I'm going to learn photo/video editing so the low wattage isn't going to be a big issue for me. I do wish it were higher considering the omen handles heat so well. I assume throttling the wattage is for thermal issues. But I don't know much about PC builds
yes you can game with the lid closed. I tested those vents above the keyboard with a tiny piece of tissue paper with the fans at max and no airflow was going in or out of that part. Underneath, the back, and one side had very strong airflow though.

I ordered Sound Blaster X3 in order to connect this laptop to my Bose Lifestyle V20 system (2006- Still works like new) and LG CX. HMDI on this laptop does not carry audio, that's what I've been told by HP. I need this Sound Blaster X3 to provide me with optical out of the laptop to Bose's optical in. I hope to get my Dolby Digital 5.1 surround this way. I hope I get bitstream and not PCM 2.0 .I called HP and they said their audio port does not have SPDI/F out and this sucks (as for all new laptops). Even PS5 and XBXS dropped optical out. What's interesting is that NVDIA mandates now for GPU manufacturers to display TGP of graphics cards. HP and Dell do not care. I called them and asked. They did not know (HP tech support)
Hello, I've had this laptop for a month or two, but I don't know how did you get discrete graphics option to work. I tried that option once, but got my laptop bricked after an update.( Had to get a replacement one ). Either way the video is very well made. Has a lot of useful information packed in it and I quite enjoyed it. To be fair, you're quite underrated

I bought the one with AMD R5 5800H W RTX 3060 But I just noticed that when I'm gaming while plugged in the battery percentage keeps dropping, so is this normal?!
Based on other reviews, there's this feature called Adaptive Battery that can be accessed through BIOS. It supposedly helps to prolong battery life in a way that it prevents charging when cpu is under heavy load. Though from what I read, it caps at around 50% so at that point the battery will then go up
Yeah that version does better with thermals but I figured it be best to review the hottest machine to see what it’s limitations were. Surprisingly it never even reach a temperature that bottlenecked the CPU!
m17R3 has significantly less FPS than this one and it gets a lot hotter. As much as I love my Alienware.. HP Omen definitely wins when it comes to performance
I had this exact model and I really liked it. Ended up returning it for a ryzen model, but I really liked the keyboard. Layout is way better than the g15 and key travel felt really similar. I have bigger hands and was really surprised with the omen keyboard.
I am very pleased with the intel. Honestly i don’t see a point waiting when the thermals never got that hot even with the intel. Basically, I was never bottlenecked with performance because it never got hot enough

I actually own this laptop and have been using it for about 3 months now. It is by far, the best laptop i have owned. and i have owned 5 not including this one. I have always had trouble with FPS and Cooling on all other Laptops due to power leaks and poor build qualities. This one has none of those issues. and i won't lie, it gets really loud, but i constantly wear Headphones so it is basically a non issue for me, as well as the keyboard and mouse, as i use a docking station and external peripherals. Also the screen looks amazing but i also hook up to my Terrible Viewsonic VG2455-2k monitor. 60hz and (oh god) 15ms response, and even there video is crisp and clear and at medium settings, on all but Raytracing in COD Coldwar, i can still get up to 113 FPS. which compared to previous machines is amazing. i just thought i would write this little blurb up for your viewers and they can hit me up anytime if they have any questions and you as well. thanks for your review and i look forward to watching your other vids.

@@JustinTechTips The Omen has the same specs as the one you have reviewed. I have only made one upgrade at this point which is a 2TB Mushkin Nvme Drive for games. as far as utilizing the Omen Gaming Hub, I have done the Intelligent Undervolting and it has kept me at an average 1.2 volts and still able to run all my current games at max settings when using the Laptop Screen and Medium and high settings when using the 2K monitor. Also to note, this is using the Discrete mode (GPU only, no hybrid with intel Graphics) The next upgrade will be to put in 32 GB of RAM, not that i need it all at once, but i do use my laptop to edit videos and Photoshop when i get a hair to do it. But the 16 GB is more than enough to run Most Graphic Intensive Games. Hope this helps you anyone else that reads thsi.
@based based It is a really good laptop and you get a second Nvme Slot which is great cause the 512GB is a bit lacking, especially if you have a larger game library.

It baffles me that so few people mention HDMI 2.1, which is one of the selling points of this laptop. MSI and Asus do not offer HDMI 2.1 and this is the only reason I did not go with them. It's nice to connect it to LG CX from time to time and not be constrained by HDMI 2.0

I was on Performance mode. I did a test with both and Performance always gave the best FPS so I ran all my benchmarks in that mode
The 'speakers' above the keyboard aren't speakers, they're intake vents. The speakers are on the bottom, which aren't subs.

I’ve just ordered the 165Hz QHD . Ryzen version , did you ever have a chance to check that one out finding it hard to find a review on that
got one for college last summer not quite the exact same one you have shown in the video mine has the ryzen 7 5800h cput and the refresh rate of 165hz however everything is pretty much the same like the 16 gb ran ddr and the rtx3070 however mine doesnt perform near that well i get around 40-70 fps av 40-50 fps with cpu fans up to 90s and guessing around 50-70 external due to the exhaust leaving burn marks on my fingers and my omen hub lacking some of your software options like the graphics manager while doing minimal tasks its quite nice cold and quiet but when i do anything else everything else fall flat about this laptop and makes the showcases nothing more than a bold claim not sure whats wrong with my unit but any help is wanted and greatly appreciated
I have this laptop, I got this model open box for about 1400. Great deal IMO, it’s a beast but it is fucking loud during gaming. At full RPM the fans dissipate heat very well for such a small machine but sounds like a small jet engine. I usually wear headphones when gaming so I don’t notice it a lot, but it’s something to consider. I also came from a 17” laptop ( asus rog strix g17) and it’s something to get used to but with an external keyboard and mouse I just have to get used to the smaller screen size and much higher refresh rate
Oh wow, yeah you got a great deal with this at 1400 Snapps. It was one of the loudest fans I've heard but fans don't usually bother me too much. I'm always rendering on my Alienware at Full Speed so I'm used to a jet engine sound at my house constantly! The wife doesn't like it too much though lol
I use mine more like a desktop with an external monitor, with the horrible battery life that's all its really good for. Its great in that regard. A shame not to use the 300hz monitor though.

Ryzen version doesn't have a MUX switch so you cannot disable Optimus without a monitor.

Yeah Prauffullit, unfortunately, I think pretty much every gaming laptop will underperform when unplugged as they use the direct power for all that extra processing.

Great question David! I never put my head on the bottom of the laptop but from sitting at a normal distance from it, I never heard any coil whine

Hey do you usually record with a desktop mic or a headset? You probably will hear a little noise from the fans if you use your default laptop mic, just slightly with a desktop mic and not at all with a headset.

with every setting turned down to its absolute minimum, no lights, battery saver, 60fps, 20% screen brightness.... i got less than 3 hours, and i was literally just watching 1080p youtube videos. Honestly thats unacceptable IMO.

hello what is the AC watts.... my laptop is the omen 15 ek1xxx rtx 3070 32gb ram, the AC is 200 watts (came with the laptop), but when I play using the AC the laptop exit the games (crash) in about 10 seconds if is a demanding game (I switched to another laptop (same model) the owner had another one and let me get, and still has the same thing)... he said to buy a 230 watts AC , do you think this will work... Yeah the 3060 Legion 7 is showing some great benchmarks due to its high TDP. It is pretty crazy but it actually performs better than the HP Omen 15s 3070

Hey Andrea, it doesn't specifically have an option that says overclocking, but switching to discrete graphics mode and using intelligent undervolting options and setting the thermal profile to performance boosts the machine like overclocking would.

I got the AMD equivalent of this omen with the Ryzen 7 5800H at 100 wattage I don't think it makes a difference between the i7 and Ryzen 7. Unfortunately it was a custom and will take nearly 2 months to ship for some reason. I assume chip shortage and high demand are still going on. I guess the whole planet has been shopping for new laptops this past year. But HP seems notorious for slow manufacturing to shipping. I've found forums dating back almost a decade complaining about HP shipping.

I'm more of a casual gamer so the low wattage isn't a big deal but is a draw back for a 3070 when gaming. I'm going to learn photo/video editing so the low wattage isn't going to be a big issue for me. I do wish it were higher considering the omen handles heat so well. I assume throttling the wattage is for thermal issues. But I don't know much about PC builds

Can you game on external display with the lid closed? I noticed the vents are also above the keyboard.
yes you can game with the lid closed. I tested those vents above the keyboard with a tiny piece of tissue paper with the fans at max and no airflow was going in or out of that part. Underneath, the back, and one side had very strong airflow though.

I ordered Sound Blaster X3 in order to connect this laptop to my Bose Lifestyle V20 system (2006- Still works like new) and LG CX. HMDI on this laptop does not carry audio, that's what I've been told by HP. I need this Sound Blaster X3 to provide me with optical out of the laptop to Bose's optical in. I hope to get my Dolby Digital 5.1 surround this way. I hope I get bitstream and not PCM 2.0 .I called HP and they said their audio port does not have SPDI/F out and this sucks (as for all new laptops). Even PS5 and XBXS dropped optical out. What's interesting is that NVDIA mandates now for GPU manufacturers to display TGP of graphics cards. HP and Dell do not care. I called them and asked. They did not know (HP tech support)
Hello, I've had this laptop for a month or two, but I don't know how did you get discrete graphics option to work. I tried that option once, but got my laptop bricked after an update.( Had to get a replacement one ).
Either way the video is very well made. Has a lot of useful information packed in it and I quite enjoyed it.

I didn’t have that experience with mine but it is possible when pushing it really hard on certain games. How fast was the battery going down?
Based on other reviews, there's this feature called Adaptive Battery that can be accessed through BIOS. It supposedly helps to prolong battery life in a way that it prevents charging when cpu is under heavy load. Though from what I read, it caps at around 50% so at that point the battery will then go up
There is no speaker above the keyboard. Only the two on the bottom.

Yeah that version does better with thermals but I figured it be best to review the hottest machine to see what it’s limitations were. Surprisingly it never even reach a temperature that bottlenecked the CPU!

m17R3 has significantly less FPS than this one and it gets a lot hotter. As much as I love my Alienware.. HP Omen definitely wins when it comes to performance
I had this exact model and I really liked it. Ended up returning it for a ryzen model, but I really liked the keyboard. Layout is way better than the g15 and key travel felt really similar. I have bigger hands and was really surprised with the omen keyboard.

I am very pleased with the intel. Honestly i don’t see a point waiting when the thermals never got that hot even with the intel. Basically, I was never bottlenecked with performance because it never got hot enough
