These myths usually have a ton of variation in them, but then one I heard mortals weren’t actually able to grab the apples so he needed atlas to get them for him. he actually killed the dragon himself beforehand but when he went to grab the apple is disappeared in his hand. He knew that it wasn’t possible for a mortal to grab it because Prometheus told him so when haracles freed him(in the version I know he freed Prometheus so he would tell him where the apples actually were). 13:36 I always thought Medusa was a loyal servant of Athena, but she was beautiful. And one day Poseidon came in a temple and stuff started happening, and Athena was mad she was betrayed, she cursed Medusa to be so hideous that if she looked at someone they’d turn to stone. Soon Athena realized that what happened to Medusa wasn’t her fault but Athena was like “…”. So yeah, Athena wasn’t so wise when she accused an innocent worshipper of something she couldn’t control. People back then needed to get their story straight!
As far as we can tell, the original version of Medusa was just a monster lady who was always a monster lady. Ovid made the Medusa-as-a-victim-of-the-gods version up for Metamorphoses because it was more narratively compelling, and it's stuck around because he was right, his version is better.
Some people like telling it as Athena turning Medusa into a scary death snake lady to make sure that men dont take advantage of her beauty again, and its a way to protect herself. But this isnt the original saying, just a more wholesome way to look at it.
Anyone else notice that when perseus talks, the meduse head snakes that come out the bag will move their mouth? Thats so cool, this is what separates him from others, because he cares about the detail, this is why i love this dude. 😂
There a a lot of variations of Medusa's story. The one I heard was that she was a loyal servant of Athena and was raped so Athena gave her the snake head to protect herself (by Turing people to stone). It's so interesting that everyone has their own version of her story.
This one is a modern version of the story. There are no evidentiary sources to suggest this would have been an actual interpretation or version that ancient Greeks and Roman’s would’ve used. I think the internet is to blame
The main problem with this interpretation is that she helps Perseus slay Medusa (giving him the mirror and items to help) and even puts Medusa’s head on her shield afterwards.
Another one was she was a loyal subject of athena but was raped by posidon and athena punished her instead by giving her a head of snakes then helped percius slay her by giving him the mirror
8:09 this part was actually really insightful when you think about it. I watched this on the 27th but I came back today to subscribe. Keep it up, and good luck on 338K subs!
I notice you glossed over who Alcmene actually was, i.e. Zeus' great-granddaughter (through her grandpa, Perseus). That's right, Heracles is his own great-granduncle and his brother is his great-grandpa, and his dad is also his great-great-grandpa. Like, lots of mythologies have deities whose family trees don't fork, but the Olympian tree looks like the goddamned Gordian knot.
Also, turns the whole story of Medusa boning Poseidon in Athena's temple and getting cursed was made up by Ovid centuries into the Roman Empire as part of a story where he ranted about powerful people abusing the innocent because he got exiled by the emperor. There's no evidence that this part of the story existed before that.

(he paints and stuff yk) idk if this is correct tho- i just read a book so yeah. someone correct me if im wrong idk
Hey jake, when explaining the story of Medusa, you used the myth of Ovid as her origin which isn’t the main myth of Medusa , other that one story all others agree she was born a gorgon like her sisters but born mortal, this wouldn’t be a bad use of the many myths . If not for use in context of Perseus which does tell the original story of Medusa
12:40 I feel like this happens a lot in Greek stories that people will let nature kill someone they want dead as to absolve them of punishment for killing someone, which makes me wonder how often that happened in real life.
Medusa actually got SA’d by Poseidon and according to some versions, Athena either cursed her with her snake like appearance for “fornicating” in her temple not to mention she was also a priestess or she gave her her snake form as protection so she wouldn’t get SA’d again. It really depends but one thing for sure is that Medusa and Poseidon’s encounter was not consensual
Kinda of a dick move for Athena to BM her priestess for getting raped, but I guess it's because she couldn't sqaure up against Poseidon for political reasons. Proves that it's not just the male gods who are assholes.
Jake, you mentioned in the chat that you were thinking of doing more material for Medusa and Persephone - if you do, fabulous. The amount of misinformation on these two is astounding. I only recently learned that there were multiple ancient writers that directly quoted the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, proving that not only was it well known, it was culturally significant to ancient Greeks. So boo-hoo to anyone who whines about there being multiple versions of the kidnapping of Persephone; the ancient people themselves show us what they believed.

Pretty sure he mentioned them once or twice.

You definitely got that lawn ornament thing for Percy Jackson
Imagine Percy Jackson being thought of as a genuine part of the Greek mythos in a thousand years from now.
It would harm the reputation of the greek myths.
I love how the only way we can explain the existence of everything is just
“There was nothing”
“And then there was something”
Im pretty sure thats the beginning to literally every religion or belief in existence

i read a book about perspehone and hades, but the book said that persephone hated being stuck on the island with her strict boring mom, so she dipped and went to the underworld. perspehone turned out to be the goddess of life, so thats why she spends 50/50 of her time in the underworld and the other in the living. she also fell in love with hades, after finding out bro is a huge softie.

He made a whole video explaining it
Dude you are my spirit animal. Your humor is so wonderful
18:37 I’m going to go with option b
You have really simplified mythology. Good job!👍
So you read percy Jackson??
18:36 B! The answer is B!
I'm greek and this is a subject at school which I don't study for since it's boring but u make it very entertaining!
12:40 I feel like this happens a lot in Greek stories that people will let nature kill someone they want dead as to absolve them of punishment for killing someone, which makes me wonder how often that happened in real life.
Why do you think people used unfair trials to kill women that they didn't lik- i mean that they most definitely knew were witches?
33:27 such a good boy! And hades is using Heracles to take his dog on a walk lol 😂
or is it dogs?
Medusa actually got SA’d by Poseidon and according to some versions, Athena either cursed her with her snake like appearance for “fornicating” in her temple not to mention she was also a priestess or she gave her her snake form as protection so she wouldn’t get SA’d again. It really depends but one thing for sure is that Medusa and Poseidon’s encounter was not consensual
I made a video about this
th-cam.com/video/SGOH_uSNjZY/w-d-xo.html
Kinda of a dick move for Athena to BM her priestess for getting raped, but I guess it's because she couldn't sqaure up against Poseidon for political reasons. Proves that it's not just the male gods who are assholes.
Thats the dramatic roman version(fanart basically) in the original version, the gorgons, including medusa were born with snakes for hair.
Hestia is my favorite

Jake, you mentioned in the chat that you were thinking of doing more material for Medusa and Persephone - if you do, fabulous. The amount of misinformation on these two is astounding.
I only recently learned that there were multiple ancient writers that directly quoted the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, proving that not only was it well known, it was culturally significant to ancient Greeks. So boo-hoo to anyone who whines about there being multiple versions of the kidnapping of Persephone; the ancient people themselves show us what they believed.
16:43 dang hades is 7 ft
Atlas actually holds up the heavens, not the sky. This would be an easy mistake to make since those two words have very similar meanings
Kratos is just sitting in the backround, sharpening his blades.
