I have gone off without my tent before now and an hour away from home and my neighbours had a laugh over it luckily I had plenty of time to get my tent and get back to the site before dark. I like the English Woodsmans nonsense sincere what you see is what you get approach although I'm not a wild camper I still get enjoyment and a education from the channel. Love some of the northern scenery to as I'm from Northumberland.
Loved that ... did the same once myself but on my motorbike, got down towards Lynton and too far to go back ... so rode up in the hills and up a track to a quarry and kipped under a hedgerow ... it was damp and miserable mind. Great video and proper funny.
Long time follower here, and just wanted to say never be disappointed in yourself if you persevere. Quitters have every right to be disappointed in themselves, but you are not a quitter. Thanks for sticking it out for us. I have car camped a couple of times, and I love it. But I have a big car with tinted windows, so that helps me feel secure and a bit more stealthy. Also, please do not feel that you have to torture yourself by eating spicy foods for entertainment value. I don't want to see you suffer, I watch you because you are down to earth, you keep it clean, and you are real. You also do a great job with filming, you set up your shots really well.

Still got that one to come...Just getting ready to set off for three days of camping on an island so fingers crossed everything is there when we arrive!! A good video, lessons to learn! The main one being to not try eating Italian cookies!!!

Hey Dan, most driver doors have a lock/unlock button above the inside door handle. This button will lock/unlock all the doors while your driving or stationary. It wont engage the alarm.

We love car camping me and my wife we travel all over the country parked up in some amazing places we have a seven seater so we have a lot more room. It’s a lot cheaper than paying for hotels, Jeffrey with everything rising price wise I think you’re done okay for you first go make sure you do some more. I will be uploading some of our videos of this trip. We are on now in Devon and Cornwall so keep your eyes open for them to. I have been a subscriber to your channel now for awhile. I car camp when I can’t use my roof tent and find it quite nice. My seats fold flat and windows are tinted so very comfortable. Btw your a braver man than me trying those chilli noodles without a toilet handy 😂
It happens to all of us at some point 😆 To be honest my car boot has double of everything I could ever need. It’s a full-on survive for a week setup, any place, any terrain. A lot of the time I change my mind on equipment so it’s easy to go back to the car to get what you need or to replace something that’s failed. Trouble is the extremes of temperatures in cars can damage items so They need to be protected.
I agree with badgerw7997. I keep a backpack with everything I need to get home in case the worst happens. I also have a small cheap tent, a camo tarp. Don't feel bad about forgetting your tent - we all make bonehead mistakes. Whats one of the reasons I watch your channel is because you're honest and you don't edit out these kinds of things. One time I told everyone not to bring a main meal cos I made a pot of chili big enough to feed the squad. I left said chili in a bag by my front door. This episode is still a win in my book
Oh really felt for you mate. Did similar going to wastwater to paddle board, get there and my wetsuit was missing. Ended up just biting the bullet and went in my boxers. Didn't fall in thankfully but felt much better after the initial frustration and felt amazing not just going home. Well done for persevering mate 👍
Had a bit of a mishap myself this week, went out to do first solo wild camp when it was chucking it down and got my inner damp, all downhill from there. Had to get the Mrs to pick me up 😂Going to get back out there soon as we get some decent weather.
I have left home, got to the start of the track, opened the boot and there was no pack !! just had to turn around and go home. When I got home the pack was waiting for me on the deck. Put the pack onboard and started off again. That's just one story, got a 1000 of them. You are quite right, you're not the only one to do it. There are many ways that you can get caught out. I got to the top of the mountain (1600 M) and went to make a cup of tea. I couldn't work out why the gas can wouldn't fit on to the burner, then I realized that the can didn't have a thread on the nipple. This has happened to me twice now. So, make sure that the can has a thread before you set off. Don't worry Dan, you will do it again. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺
Should keep a little bottle of flavoured oil, it takes noodles to ... nearly nutritionally balanced. ... I remember, I told you before I think. On the banks of loch lomond, the petrol stove died - so I had petrol and you cant cook on petrol, it just flames and dies - so I mixed it with bits of polystyrene I found on the beach (enviromental cleaning) and made napalm - then cooked egg, beans, black pudding and toast. It was pretty damn good.

Hi Dan..not sure on your packing procedure but ever since my army days i have packed my bergan the same way for years..helps for finding food,water and first aid kits.Packing changes depending on distance and weather but you should keep it roughly the same.Just practice at home and find what works for you.

Interesting video. Far too many people in the UK have no choice but to sleep in their car. I doubt they would pick a spot on an open track within easy sight of a house! But it was great to see you demonstrate how difficult it is, especially when you are not prepared for it. Thank you for the insight and good humour.
Car camping is fine in the right vehicle. In my Juke I just slept in the seat when I had to sleep in the car. In my Escape, I want to have a nice set up. I need to look into the window coverings but I like to see out... My car's alarm isn't set off by rocking etc, I checked. Maybe have a spare tent in the car just incase u for get it?

If you buy a few sets of pegs you can have a set in each tent bag so you don't need to think about it, they're there. I forget stuff, so I have plans like this in place so if I do forget there's no dramas. Poles can be an issue too, super light weight poles in a pannier bag take care of that and using tarps more than tents.
Of all things to forget, haha, I've done it too!! Luckily I've now got a roof tent but I always have the backup of sleeping in the car should it be bad weather, but even then I still prefer to get a tent out than sleeping in the car. Unless you have an RV or 4x4 with a bit of space you just feel closed in. See your rocking an Insignia too 👍
You've an Insignia .... As a former owner can confirm plenty of room for sleeping in ...though I had the estate version. Also 1 blip locks but doesn't put alarm on, two blips puts alarms on. Know that from having dogs in mine. Never forgotten tent . Have forgotten all means of lighting a stove . ..also fuel for stove . Stove itself . Food .

Good on you for sticking it out. You might have been better off reclining the drivers seat or the passenger seat fully back and sleeping on them. Lots more headroom if you're claustrophobic. I have car tent before when I was younger and that was in the city. Another time when I was still young , spent 2 weeks in states in a hire car. Rock up late at supermarket carpark or dark streets with lots of cars. Then in the morning, goto the beach, use the shower points and mcburger toilets facilities 😅 Maybe I should revisit this. Btw I would have put that parcel shelf on the other side of windows for a little privacy. I would sleep the other way round so I can open the passenger door, slip my legs out to get in and out easier. Keep up the good work mister

Glad you improvised and worked through it Dan. Here’s an idea stash a tarp in the car in case this happens again. Then you can improvise a tent/shelter from it. I liked that cookware set too.

And when I saw the noodle packet hahaha, I bought those from Home bargains a few weeks back and Baahhh they're HOT!!. you should keep a little tarp in the car, like a snug pack stasha size. You can make yourself an awning off the boot to cook under. Just incase you forget your tent again. Still good to see you out. Cheers

I think you made the right choice to stay out and the video was still a good watch. I would've thought you could've locked the doors manually with a latch near the handles and this wouldn't set the alarm. I don't know if your car has latches to manually lock and unlock them, but mine does.

Main things I have a tendency to forget is me pillow and me spork! Not as bad as forgetting me tent or tarp, but still a pain, when you are used to those little luxuries lol. One thing I would love to forget is my fear of heights! I suffer from it real bad and it has a tendency to spoil a few adventures, to full enjoyment level, but heho, it is what it is!

I car camped the nc500 this January. Never get great sleep but then again I don't get great sleep in tent or hammock either. I guess there's a time and place for all types of camping. For the nc500 in depths of winter, a car camp was probably my best option but in summer I'd have took a tent
I slept in my insignia when i went to hike Snowdon as by the time i got back down the hotels were closed, it was so uncomfortable same problem as you the alarm kept going off but i was so tired think i manged a couple of hours sleep. Think i will get a air bed to try in there next time as i just slept on a blanket. I cant imagine doing it in a smaller car.

Whenever me and the Mrs travel anywhere we usually have our dog in the back of the car (Nissan Juke TD). When we go to shops or supermarkets we leave the dog in the car most times and always remote lock the car. As far as I know, our fur baby has never set off the car alarm so you should be ok in yours. Do what I do and do a dry run, so to speak. Lock the car with you inside and clamber about, if the alarm goes off you'll know whether or not you can do it. When I used to go camping a lot 20 or so years ago, I always had a ready bag in the car for such eventualities like you had in your car. Don't think of it as a failure though Dan, think of it as a new adventure that like you said, next time, you'll be better prepared for a night in the boot........

I was wild camping on North York Moors few weeks ago and was scared shitless at 11.30at night when in my tent trying to sleep heard what I think might have been a drone above my tent, made a very strange noise, stopped then came back again, then stopped 😮

Gas bottles, I always leave my big gas bottle. I usually take a 30yr old 2 ring cooker to the campsite, and ive now got five of the gas bottles stashed up in the garden shed, I don't drive back home to pick one up, this year I bought a one ring burner with the gas canisters, it was so much easier. Just threw it in my roof box to live until the next camp in August.
Well, here in Eaglescliffe it's been heavy to the fine mist type. My fishing umbrella would cope with that but, ground below wouldn't, nor would my gear. When I plan a fishing session I don't mind if it rains on the day, I'd like to get down and set up before it does.We all make mistakes, having a car refuge is like having no umbrella/tent, so car boot picnic. Nothing wrong with that, it's a fail safe. Like me not observing weather and getting caught out soaked to undies lol

Hi Dan..not sure on your packing procedure but ever since my army days i have packed my bergan the same way for years..helps for finding food,water and first aid kits.Packing changes depending on distance and weather but you should keep it roughly the same.Just practice at home and find what works for you.

I doubt they would pick a spot on an open track within easy sight of a house! But it was great to see you demonstrate how difficult it is, especially when you are not prepared for it.

Car camping is fine in the right vehicle. In my Juke I just slept in the seat when I had to sleep in the car. In my Escape, I want to have a nice set up. I need to look into the window coverings but I like to see out... My car's alarm isn't set off by rocking etc, I checked. Maybe have a spare tent in the car just incase u for get it?

Hi lad I left the keys to the roof box’s we’re all our camping gear was at home and we were 80 odd miles away from home 😂
If you buy a few sets of pegs you can have a set in each tent bag so you don't need to think about it, they're there. I forget stuff, so I have plans like this in place so if I do forget there's no dramas. Poles can be an issue too, super light weight poles in a pannier bag take care of that and using tarps more than tents.

Of all things to forget, haha, I've done it too!! Luckily I've now got a roof tent but I always have the backup of sleeping in the car should it be bad weather, but even then I still prefer to get a tent out than sleeping in the car. Unless you have an RV or 4x4 with a bit of space you just feel closed in. See your rocking an Insignia too 👍
You've an Insignia .... As a former owner can confirm plenty of room for sleeping in ...though I had the estate version. Also 1 blip locks but doesn't put alarm on, two blips puts alarms on. Know that from having dogs in mine.
Never forgotten tent . Have forgotten all means of lighting a stove .

I have car tent before when I was younger and that was in the city.
Another time when I was still young , spent 2 weeks in states in a hire car. Rock up late at supermarket carpark or dark streets with lots of cars. Then in the morning, goto the beach, use the shower points and mcburger toilets facilities 😅
Maybe I should revisit this.
Btw I would have put that parcel shelf on the other side of windows for a little privacy. I would sleep the other way round so I can open the passenger door, slip my legs out to get in and out easier.

Daniel, I thought I was the only one who had days like that!!. And when I saw the noodle packet hahaha, I bought those from Home bargains a few weeks back and Baahhh they're HOT!!. you should keep a little tarp in the car, like a snug pack stasha size. You can make yourself an awning off the boot to cook under. Just incase you forget your tent again. Still good to see you out. Cheers

I think you made the right choice to stay out and the video was still a good watch. I would've thought you could've locked the doors manually with a latch near the handles and this wouldn't set the alarm. I don't know if your car has latches to manually lock and unlock them, but mine does.

Main things I have a tendency to forget is me pillow and me spork! Not as bad as forgetting me tent or tarp, but still a pain, when you are used to those little luxuries lol. One thing I would love to forget is my fear of heights! I suffer from it real bad and it has a tendency to spoil a few adventures, to full enjoyment level, but heho, it is what it is!

I do love watching your videos, just a note on your noodles for next time put the powder in while cooking it helps cook the spice out a bit. You are brave camping in a tent I’d much rather be in me car I can lock myself in and feel safe

I car camped the nc500 this January. Never get great sleep but then again I don't get great sleep in tent or hammock either. I guess there's a time and place for all types of camping. For the nc500 in depths of winter, a car camp was probably my best option but in summer I'd have took a tent
I slept in my insignia when i went to hike Snowdon as by the time i got back down the hotels were closed, it was so uncomfortable same problem as you the alarm kept going off but i was so tired think i manged a couple of hours sleep. Think i will get a air bed to try in there next time as i just slept on a blanket. I cant imagine doing it in a smaller car.

Whenever me and the Mrs travel anywhere we usually have our dog in the back of the car (Nissan Juke TD). When we go to shops or supermarkets we leave the dog in the car most times and always remote lock the car. As far as I know, our fur baby has never set off the car alarm so you should be ok in yours. Do what I do and do a dry run, so to speak. Lock the car with you inside and clamber about, if the alarm goes off you'll know whether or not you can do it.
When I used to go camping a lot 20 or so years ago, I always had a ready bag in the car for such eventualities like you had in your car. Don't think of it as a failure though Dan, think of it as a new adventure that like you said, next time, you'll be better prepared for a night in the boot........

I was wild camping on North York Moors few weeks ago and was scared shitless at 11.30at night when in my tent trying to sleep heard what I think might have been a drone above my tent, made a very strange noise, stopped then came back again, then stopped 😮

Where were you? If you were near Menwith Hill or Fylingdales, you may well have been checked on by a military drone perhaps.

Gas bottles, I always leave my big gas bottle. I usually take a 30yr old 2 ring cooker to the campsite, and ive now got five of the gas bottles stashed up in the garden shed, I don't drive back home to pick one up, this year I bought a one ring burner with the gas canisters, it was so much easier. Just threw it in my roof box to live until the next camp in August.

Well, here in Eaglescliffe it's been heavy to the fine mist type. My fishing umbrella would cope with that but, ground below wouldn't, nor would my gear. When I plan a fishing session I don't mind if it rains on the day, I'd like to get down and set up before it does.We all make mistakes, having a car refuge is like having no umbrella/tent, so car boot picnic. Nothing wrong with that, it's a fail safe. Like me not observing weather and getting caught out soaked to undies lol
