Man I need to make mine street legal! Mine is an '01 with no title (got it from west Virginia with a bill of sale) so I'm not sure how hard it would be to street legalize it 🤣
@@almostoemgarage8143 may need to contact previous owner for the title and if they don’t have it you have proof it was sold to you, could probably file for lost title then when you get a title you may or may not need to do the Vermont dmv trick
That's what I got this one for but no title haha didn't get that lucky 🤣 but for sure I like these better than the xr600s, those things are a bit massive for me. Still had a blast on my buddy's in the trails though.
I'd check what jets they put in there and make sure it's for your elevation. Air filter and exhaust help too. Turning the idle up a smidge helps and is good for wheelies lol with these stock carbs the bog doesn't completely go away but I'd say it's like 90% gone for me, I don't notice it at all anymore while riding or even wheeling from a stand still.
@@almostoemgarage8143 so I saw these Nibbi carbs on Amazon. They look pretty cool and well built. Has anyone tried these or would it work in the 400? It looks like they have one for 400-500cc 63mm x 44mm pwk38mm. They are pretty affordable and one kit is $160 for the whole kit. And if it did work or if I got a different carb, what would I have to change? Is the 400 built to handle a high performance carb? The reviews said it works great right out of the box.
@@almostoemgarage8143 I have a UNI foam filter & snorkel delete. Unsure if the exhaust weld was ground down or baffle was drilled. Gearing is 15/48 so it should have some more low end acceleration.
Honda XR400R done 4000km and was getting difficult to start Once started it would only run on half choke. So I bought a rebuild carb kit with all the needles and rubber rings. Hex Main Jet - #140 Slow Jet - #52 Jet Needle - D625 Fitment: Fit for Honda XR400R 1998-2004 Cleaned that carb like a new pin. Fitted the new parts. Paid attention to the original screw settings. Starts easily no choke. Open it up it dies. Put half choke on it just about let’s you open the throttle but doesn’t like it. Put full choke on and can open the throttle and drive about easily. What have I done wrong and what do I need to do?
I have a few questions. My XR baugs a lil at mid throttle. But when I go off a jump it seems to reset and runs fine. Should I check the fuel filter or the float bowl? It seems to be something sticking or stuck. Also, is it ok if the valves tick a little? Thanks if anyone has any advice.
Definitely sounds like the float needle may be sticking, since it goes back to normal after a jump. I think mid range is also the needle jet so double check that too. I'd just give the carb a good cleaning to start. And yes definitely ticky engines, valve rattle and cam chain rattle are normal. I check all mine were in spec when I got the bike and still a bit noisy. My drz 125 is also rattly. I think it's the nature of these thumpers.
I was gonna say the same, you need to find the spot where it feels really hard, then push it just beyond that spot, then fully up and kick it down. My -97 400R almost always starts on first kick with the stock carb (bigger jets, no snorkel & Micron slip-on). If it's cold I turn the idle up 1/4 turn on startup, and choke lever fully up. When it starts, immediately put the choke halfway down, and after 10 seconds choke off and idle back to normal 👍🏼
160 and a 60, don't buy them online, I tried this and ebay sent the wrong size. Just go to On the Edge Honda in Amherst, I think they were $5 each. They have boxes of jets for stock Honda carbs. Ebay and Amazon sell them for $10 each!

Great tip that a lot of people don't tell you. Shim the needle all the way to the bottom when you add a bigger jet. Big power gains in mid range
From Ohio too! Hell yes love the xr400! I got a 97 with new top end, hd clutch and springs, pumper carb, cam ,exhaust, and made it street legal.

Pro-tip: Check your valve adjustment. Properly adjusted valves go a long way to making it a stone-cold one-kick wonder.
