I have asked myself the same questions every time I see that. A big pair of mitts would be warmer. Another question, why does he insist on leaning on people, especially while they are fighting a fish? So rude.

They are on his hands. You didn't ask why he didn't put his fingers in. Anyway, probably when you're as old as he is and being exposed to the weather as much as his have been the blood flow slows down to your extremities so he can't keep his hands as warm but yet can put them in if he needs to handle something. I know I hate wearing gloves to ice fish and will curl my hands up in my gloves to rewarm my fingers. Tightlines.
Great videos but why do you have to lean on people constantly? Too touchy feely….personal space buddy.
