I sold decorative stone years ago. Super wealthy part of the city, I would have to go out and move 150 pound stones stacked on each other by hand to see which one these assholes wanted. One time this couple came in a new Yukon Denali, mid 40s. They have full alcoholic drinks in their hands. It is almost closing. I jumped on the opportunity. These drunks proceed to pick out $10k worth of stone they didn't need and had no idea what it was. Random bullshit that didn't go together. The hog woman fell over on some stone and dropped her booze and they both started cracking up. Soon after, the guy pulled out the credit card, secured my $500 bonus.

There is a special type of bitter, unfulfilled woman who seeks out a customer service job as an opportunity to be rude to people over the phone. It’s usually small, non-corporate entities. And it’s their way of getting back at the world
My dad and his dad were both the people who trained me to only buy something once. If you're going to buy something, get the higher end stuff. It never fucking disappoints. Or at least the best bang-for-buck option
"Buy it nice or buy it twice" is the phrase that encapsulates this. And it's always seemed true to me, as well. I typically try to buy the highest end quality or performance thing possible, only when I've tried to cut corners did I end up getting fucked and it doesn't last or has a ton of unforeseen problems. If you're willing to spend 80% of the same amount, you may as well go the full 100% to get the expensive thing in my experience.
Oh, just read an above comment as well. Made a really good point, in addition to my other comment, that's an important, crucial note. To DO YOUR RESEARCH. It's not like it's a matter of just blindly throwing money at the most expensive thing and hoping for the best. If you're going to invest a chunk of money in, basically anything, it really pays off to set aside some time to see the options out there and others experience with them, don't listen to biased reviews either etc etc I also kinda always anticipate the worst, within reason, so when anything less than that happens, I end up pleasantly surprised, that also sorta helps. For example, you read that X thing you're looking into buying is fantastic, but it really breaks down after around the 2 year mark. A really common example for that is the batteries in a lot of stuff. If I go in pretty much expecting "Oh, well, after a year and change or so, it'll probably only hold a charge for like an hour." and that's okay. Essentially, just knowing what you're getting into, coupled with not setting expectations unreasonably high. And if that doesn't end up happening or being as bad, awesome for you.
I've learned this from my parents growing up, we didn't really have nice things not because they couldn't afford it, but because they were cheap. It always came back around on them in the future.
Yep, that's why you can explode your service business by being moderately competent, and having some discipline with your cash flow. The hardest thing is just finding good workers.
In my experience New York City is the only place in America where people are noticably more competent and hard working. But the closer you are to NYC the more the people feel the right to claim that right. Boston is especially bad, they really think that they're harder better workers than anybody else but they're not.
