I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Our findings highlight the potential risks and structural integrity issues that can arise from omitting wood blocking, even with the most reliable materials and techniques. Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked. I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community!
I love the way you explain and all those logic tricks, thanks for amazing videos, only one question how do you waterproof the joints between the ceiling panels and the wall schluter kerdi boards?
for existing drywall you could use KERDI membrane. If it’s latex paint and bonded well, you can apply thin-set over it then embed the membrane per Schluter’s Handbook 👍🏼🔥
What would you do to install the newer shower panel tower systems? Do I need to put an anchor for the top of the shower head tower before putting on the kerdi-board? Can I use glass tile on kerdi- board, 6x12 tiles?
I am in the process of starting my bathroom reno and I plan on using this system. One question i have is how much overlap of the kerdi banding do you do over the drywall?
I recommend 2.5 inches of overlap. If you have any questions let me know. Also, I’m starting a beta program that involves personal coaching via FaceTime or Zoom. If you’re interested in joining it send me an email at jeff@homerepairtutor.com
Thankyou so much for being so detailed, im new to this schluter product and this has really helped. It says that the kerdi boards are vapour retarder, does that mean i dont have to put a vapour barrier behind it on a exterior outside wall. I live in a colder climate so am just used to using one. I will definitly be watching all your videos now. Thankyou!!
Great video man. So helpful! I’m building a steam shower. Will the kerdi board insulate steam? Can I put it on the ceiling also? I will need to fully enclose the shower to keep the steam in. Thanks!!!
You can use the boards or KERDI for the walls and ceiling. This article is helpful www.schluter.com/schluter-us/en_US/showers/residential_steam_showers I’d also see if you can consult with the local rep, they’re invaluable
Your videos are terrific for the DIYer. Can someone though shed light on why this Schluter Kerdi Board (which isn’t the easiest to source) is a better option than say a cement or hardie water resistant backer board which is 1/3 the price and much easier to come by? Appreciate everyone’s constructive input. Thanks!
Thank you, many foam backer boards are hard to source right now due to raw material shortages. The reason they're better than cement board is that there's no dust, they're easier to lift, you can customize niches/curbs/benches with scrap, and the system comes with a warranty. When you buy cement boards, they still need to be waterproofed with a liquid or fleece. You could use cement board with KERDI membrane or a liquid membrane like RedGard or AquaDefense. I highly recommend Schluter's system because of the drains which are solvent welded to PVC or ABS and don't rely of rubber gaskets that can fail over time. Plus the Schluter trays are fairly affordable compared to other systems. Feel free to email me at jeff@homerepairtutor.com with any more detailed questions, I'd be happy to help :)
@@HomeRepairTutor Thanks Jeff. I did find the Kerdi board at Home Depot as part of an overall shower surround kit for $600. Finding individual pieces of Kerdi board only available at Lowes and needed to buy at least 12. I think what’s confusing for a novice is that the cement backer boards say they are waterproof which implies there is no need to add fleece or liquid to them prior to thin setting them with tile? Another question-you are waterproofing the Schluter shower pan with Kerdi, but the ones I’m seeing at Home Depot are Kerdi backed so I’m guessing you don’t need to apply yet another layer of Kerdi over that prior to thin setting for tile?
so yes, all Schluter shower trays now have fleece on them. You only need to waterproof the seams between the shower tray and walls with KERDI-BAND, and overlap those seams by 2" using either Schluter ALL-SET or an unmodified thin-set mortar. It's good that the kits have KERDI-BOARD in them!!!
I'm sure this won't get an answer before I start my shower (this weekend) but where did you find that extra large pre-made shower niche? I can only find the 6x12 and the 12x12. I really like that larger one you have. Thanks!
That’s a 12x20 prefab that my local Schluter distributor had. However, these days I like making my own custom niches with scrap pieces of KERDI-BOARD, if you have questions just email me at jeff@homerepairtutor.com
great vid, i see that you cut out six to seven panels on the wall with the niche. wouldn't it be better to try to reduce to maybe four panels so not create many seams which require taping?
You guys rock! Watched all your videos and working on my shower right now. Question: I see your PEX leading up to the shower head is supported on a 2x6. Is that recommended? I just have my pex pipes free floating in the air.
Definitely pin your pex to the wood using the plastic Pex talons. Easy and cheap insurance. Otherwise, the Pex may rock around and make noise by hitting wall or wood when suddenly turning off the valve.
Great video except one thing. I am getting ready to redo a shower with Kerdi and I saw that you put your seam bands on first then your shower head seal and valve seal over that. Seems like you would want to make sure all water flows down the shower wall with no chance of water getting behind anything. Wouldn't you want to put the head seal and valve seal on first then run your wall banding over that? Thanks
Thank you for your videos , I was wondering if you’re having a hard time getting schluter panels ? And they tell me they are unsure when they will be in stock … can you use a latticrete panel with schluter membrane, pan curb etc?
Great question, yes, right now a lot of foam boards are hard to find due to raw material shortages. You could use KERDI membrane over cement board or drywall and use the Schluter shower trays. That way, you'd maintain your warranty and would be able to use the system approach. I really like Schluter's KERDI-DRAIN because it's solvent welded and doesn't rely on sealant or rubber gaskets that can fail. There's nothing worse than a shower drain that leaks!!
Hey. If I can't find kerdi-board available in my area, can I use Home Depot's Everbilt XPS Foam Waterproof Backer Board Underlayment for Wall Tile? Does it play well with the Schluter systems? Thanks.
Good sir, thank you for the video first of all. I'm going from old school methods to my first fully done schluter system. Question I have is, can I use polyurethane sealant on screw holes? I thought I've seen that somewhere.

You could try using two mixing valve seals - cut them both in one place and figure out how much of the rubber gasket you need to cut off, if any, and use KERDI-FIX to bond them together. I did a similar method for a small diverter valve recently, only it required cutting off some of the MV Seal and rebonding it together to fit a smaller opening
Hi. I am installing an exposed pipe shower system with hand shower. There is a wall mount bracket for each that is supposed to be screwed into the wall. If I have Kerdi membrane under my tile, how would you recommend waterproofing these screw holes? Is it as simple as prefilling the holes with 100% silicone caulk?
