look up Ken Smith - New Zealand - aged 77 years old and still driving his Lola T332 pretty much faster than anyone in Australasia. Think he recently broke the lap record at Hampton Downs circuit near Auckland. Competing in his 48th New Zealand Grand Prix on 9/2/2019 admittedly in The Toyota Racing Series. Just an amazing driver as Michael Lyons will attest.

Not that it would be a "poor man's sport" by any stretch of the imagination, but can you imagine a formula car like this today? Modern open wheeled chassis, with a relatively affordable Chevrolet V-8 on alky like an Outlaw sprint motor! One could blow up dozens of them, and not even come close to the cost of a fancy F-1 engine!

Hi Bozzy. This bad boy sounds incredible!😲 I'd say it's the epitome of everything a racecar should be... lightweight, raw performance, and wicked sounds blasting out of it. Can you imagine a track full of these beasts going all out? If we ever find that time machine, we definitely need to make a pit stop in 1975. Coming around the bend at 1:24 was awesome! Great driver and so cool watching him give it such a workout! Hell of good show, sir! Thanks for making this one.👏🙏

I got to see them at their peak. We were sitting at the dog leg leading to turn one at Seattle International Raceway (now Pacific Raceway). The whole field thundering towards us and veering off to the right before all of them downshifting for the slow left handers, then down the hill to the esses. Soul stirring stuff. The cars seemed so raw and overpowered. Five litre V-8s strapped to go-karts!

I'm late to the party but that car is a monster! Unreal! A full field of these cars on race day would be savage. I wonder if anyone has tried running an all aluminum small block Chevy V8 in one of these yet. I suppose traction could be a problem with less weight to help put the power to the street....what an angry sounding Chevy engine.

All aluminum block is not allowed, has to be a period correct cast iron block. There is more latitude in the heads.

I LOVED Formula 5000! Not QUITE as good as the Can Am it didn't succeed in replacing, but so much better than the fish-nor-fowl ersatz Can Am it morphed into in North America. Near F1-level power-to-weight ratios with those big, torquey (mostly Chevy) V8s making wonderful noises sitting in those sexy single-seaters. Not to mention the scream produced by the (very) occasional F1 customer-spec Cosworth DFV, like the one that resided in Gus Hutchinson's Brabham BT33. Somewhere I have a bunch of photos taken at the Lime Rock round of the F5000 championship , including one of Dick Smothers (the "smart" Smothers brother) sitting in the cockpit of what I think was Lotus's sole venture into the formula (with a Ford thinwall V8 in the back). Great racing, great memories.

kobenoyashi F5000 cars seemed to be a bit bigger. Not sure why because they should be about the same size but when I saw them side by side the F1 looked more compact. They were heavier but used basically the same running gear, other than a fuel injected 5.0 litre iron block engine. Most were Chevrolet but there were others, like the Australian-built Repco-Holden. In the mid-70s they even tried a flat plane crank. Performance wise, there was little between them but because there was more ongoing development in F1, they usually had a slight edge.

    • @MidgetRacer8192

@Jonas Bögemann actually, almost none of that is correct. while it was cheaper, it attracted TONS of people, and ChampCar had nothing to do with F5000.

Some 5000s were F1 cars with a pushrod 5 litre. 5000s were heavier as an iron block engine is heavier and support structure. Though John McCormacks Elfin had an alloy Leyland V8 [Buick]

In their halcyon days, Formula 5000 cars were only a fraction slower than Formula 1 cars. For me I preferred following Formula 5000 racing back in the late '60s & '70s rather than Formula 1 because for a start the drivers weren't up themselves and the racing was closer & more exciting to watch than F1. F1 has become a complete joke imo. It's out of control with the money invested in it and driving the cars is farcical. F1 'drivers' are nothing other than upscale computer operators. Now to me that just ain't racing. Formula 5000 will always be a real drivers competition.
