  • This is the second part of my Interview with T. Rex on 17th February 1973 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Hamburg.
Mickey Finn was very patient with me as well because my 'English' was far from good in 1973...R.I.P. Mickey Finn!
The article/interview was finally published in the German Magazine POPFOTO of April 1973 (N° 350).

Aww Mickey is so sweet. I’ve never heard him talk at this age before. He sounds intriguingly similar to Marc!! I thought.
Thanks so much for this recording … loved listening

When first met him he sounded exactly like this..quite ' posh' accent..was very surprised to hear his voice later. He used to drive a black mini and live off kensington high street in a mews house ..lovely place..My friends father photographed him with Ozzie clarke and Pierre Laroche the make up artist.

thats a Sensation. Mickey Finn with his Young voice. I have got an interview of him from late 1974 from the U.S.A. Thats brilliant too and a bit Music and Career concerning. It is from November 1974 over 30 minuites

Interesting to hear what Mickey sounded like as a young man - his speaking voice changed totally in later life:

He sounds very well spoken, using Received Pronunciation, in this interview but in the interview you mention he sounds like an old Cockney. Weird.

@@blackmore4 Bolan and especially Bowie both put on posh accents for interviews just for the hell of it.
Also Finn's voice became a lot rougher later in life due to smoking a lot for years.

@@kurtvanderbogarde8402 Fake accents in rock music is a fascinating thing but most of the time it's been the other way around - middle class musicians realising the public's demand for working class heroes and accordingly affecting working class accents (Mick Jagger, Joe Strummer, Damon Albarn etc). Those who went in the opposite direction, from working class accents to posh (Keith Moon, Keith Richards) are fewer but just as funny. There are examples of Moon and Richards speaking in the mid 60s in strong London accents but by the mid 70s, both sounded a bit like the Queen Mother! Or debauched country Lords :)
Bolan's (posh) accent doesn't actually sound particularly fake. There are certainly some London vowels but he just sounds well spoken. Probably a natural process from hanging out with his mid 60s connections - manager Simon Napier Bell and Bolan's upper middle class (wholly non-revolutionary) Tyrannosaurus Rex hippie audience. With Finn, his "posh" accent here sounds completely natural. Also, remember he's pretty drunk - always a time when the reality tends to reveal itself.

@@blackmore4 Bolan sings most of the T.Rex brown album in a cockney accent minus the glottlestops - something most people don't notice.

8:27 This raises a few questions about the accuracy of the breathalyser equipment in use at the time. Either that, or M Finn is exaggerating a little!

Steve was far much more talented & got the Pete Best treatment. Guess Mickey was Marc's friend. He had no percussion talent, as he only played along with the drummer. Had he had any actual skills, he'd, like Steve did, moved on to play in other bands.
