I want to use such a device with a plastic corner-cube reflector plate, which reflects THOUSANDS as much back in the direction of the emitter than a white paper-like surface. (See Lambertian reflector.) I want to measure 500, 1000, 2000 meters, with a resolution of 1 millimeter . Problem is, I don't think the device will 'wait for' such a delayed reflection, even when it arrives with plenty of intensity.
And, of course, the display also doesnt have sufficient digits to display this.
Perhaps these manufacturers don't want to compete with professional distance measuring equipment?

moasure seems a little tiring and inacurate.... as you u cant just point at a object.. problem with laser is that we have to see that the level is centered. photographic ones seem to be not precise also requires good focused photos and the space has to be seen... so if there are trees it can be a problem...maybe its better to have 2 types of devices... the one that creates a drawing seems a good choice as you can double check although it may take a long time to create the drawing
I thought the same, these tools seem to be gimmicks marketed to non professional people. The magpie one looked to be most useful.

@@gregsoto584 What do you talking about? All of them holding the unit in their hands mainly in the air on the video. Didn't you saw it? :D It's can not be effective that way, this is simply basic physics.
@@bestistmate Take the video to 3.51 then change playback speed to 0.25% and start the play. While you doing that, just keep look at his hand holding the device. Focus your attention to the movements, and try to imagine the line it measures. Would it be the same in every direction?
@@pwolffilms Hi Peter , most lasers in that price range have an accuracy about 1/8 of an inch per 30 ft. of course he is being loose handed with it but thats easy to correct by holding the laser right. It has spirit levels on it to help . I have one of these as i contributed to the kick starter , and its very good and great use . You don't have to go to the end of a building , which with a large area 30 plus meters, it more accurate as it halves the error. It can be used on the end if require. and on lighter note it not Physics

These are all stupid. None of them allow you to take measurements of a curved irregular surface and transport that onto wood as a template.
That would be a more-complicated device, a scanning LIDAR unit. Such a very sophisticated device was used to scan the Notre Dame cathedral, fortunately just before it burned.
