+FMHammyJ Yeah, I have fears too... it's harder to integrate ppl if they come in high numbers, but on the other hand, I still think we are responsible for Syrians. I'm glad you had nice experience with Hungarians, btw.
We are not responsible for Syrians. If the people who decided for military action in Syria want to take refugees into their own home that is fine, it's not fine to have us pay for the military intervention which most of us don't support and then be forced to take in the refugees.
Canada is NOT a "melting pot" that is the USA thing. Canada's metaphor has been a "mosaic." That difference matters. In Canada the idea is that immigrants should keep their culture and share it with the rest of us. This is supposed to be similar to the way in which a mosaic is made up of different coloured stones. We are not a US "melting pot" where every stone is supposed to melt into the same thing.
Meredith Schwartz What you end up with is an endless number of isolated cultures living next to each other with out really being part of each other. Less collective culture. More little countries with in Canada. This is not a country, this is an endless number of people who want their way of life to prevail over others.
Burce was ya but you do realize that most refugees have kids, and those kids end up going to schools where they grow up with people from all around the world. For example, I'm a grade 10 student who goes to school in Toronto. My parents fled Iran due to religious prosecution when I was a baby. Now I go to a school where I would estimate around 40% of kids are first generations immigrants and know a foreign language but that dosen't mean they don't integrate with other. Quite the opposite in fact. Most friend groups are very diverse and they get to learn about each others cultures. For example, my two best friends are russian and ethiopian. because of this I've had both russian and ethiopian food. Also, by the time a third generation of immigrants are born, they will likely be fully assimilated into Canadian culture. For example all the people I know who's grandparents came to Canada don't know the language of their country of origin. Like when me and my siblings have kids we probably won't be able to teach them Farsi and they will probably identify much more with their Canadian identity than their persian one. Even the adult immigrants from different parts of the world work and socialize together on a daily basis. Anyways my point is that there is nothing wrong with retaining your culture when you move into another country. In fact I am so blessed to be living in a city like Toronto where I have experienced so many different foods and languages and holidays and traditions from around the world. It's okay if it takes a while for a refugee to learn english or Canadian customs. It dosen't mean they shouldn't be allowed into a country for fear that they will be isolated. Just yesterday my sister was at a conference with two Syrian refugee familes that just recently came to Canada. They couldn't speak english yet so the people in the conference that knew Arabic translated what they were saying so everyone else could understand. Okay sorry for the long ass comment, it just makes me sad when people don't understand how wonderful a multicultural society can be. ❤
I don't think that is entailed by what I said at all. Nor do I think it follows from Canada's multicultural policy. There is sharing among cultures, although there is not a demand for assimilation. I have no idea where you get this "struggle to prevail" mentality from, it is certainly not my experience of Canada. The whole point of the "mosaic" metaphor is that it is not a "struggle to prevail" but instead a way of finding beauty through diversity.

+dothedeed Trudeau is alright so far. But Merkel is not. Trudeau's approach to Syrians is families first and ensuring they are safe before entering. Merkel's was just open the borders. Instead of proper screening, what you get is that most refugees are young fighting age men (72%, as noted by United Nations), ''supposedly'' from Syria; and so Merkel has successfully pushed families and young children who could need help to the side. And then you are surprised by events like in Cologne. Well, no shit! Just check the rights of women and other minorities and how they are treated in most Middle Eastern countries. That is not ISIS who holds these beliefs, but the average middle-class men of those countries. Merkel most definitively does not deserve a Nobel prize. It's honestly unbelievable how heartless Republicans are, it's disgusting. The Syrian refugees have already gone through hell. They've seen their friends and family die, their homes destroyed, and then when they go to the west seeking help and safety, people seriously want to turn them away. If we don't help them, they will die.
Don't. This isn't a good place thanks to the stupid fvcking moron running our country, Justin Trudeau. If you're in America, TRUST ME, you are waaaaay better off in America with Trump, rather than in Canada with Trudeau.
cromusic ibra Another clueless conservative, if you love trumpland so much why don't you move there. They have that special kind of racism and ignorance that would suit you well.
Fear is not a bad thing. It promotes rational judgement, and to weigh options carefully. The problem is when people take fear too far, to the point where one fears everything, where judgement becomes irrational yet still passes for something rational.
+Typical Gamer What's really irrational is calling someone a racist just because they oppose the crazy teachings/ideas of islam. First of all, islam is an idea/ideology so to call someone a racist for using their critical thinking skills to oppose an idea is crazy. That's like calling a scientist or anyone who exams the pros and cons of different ideas a racist for opposing a specific idea or theory. Do not be fooled people-- islamophobia is an INVENTED term used to silence people for fear of being called a racist lol. Its perfectly rational to speak out against a teaching that says that rape and murder is acceptable. This pc bs will be the death of your grandchildren. Mock my words.
Vannessamariahfan Calm down, friend. Where did I mention Islam? I merely stated that irrational fear is a great danger. Second, those who criticize a religion are not racist. They are critics, and deserve to have their opinions heard, like everyone else. However, a person who fears something that they do not know on baseless grounds is, to borrow your analogy, like a random person who fears science and runs away from it, unable to face facts, and instead resorts to other alternatives that are less effective. We do not call critics racist the same way we do not call critics of a scientific paper discriminatory. We do, however, call baseless, fear mongering people racist due to their ignorance, much like we would call baseless, fear mongering people idiots and discriminatory for criticizing a paper on no grounds. There are differences, and all of it lies with the person, not the political correctness.

Meredith Schwartz America is not a melting pot. We still have seperate identities/cultures and will always
Meredith Schwartz that was beautiful x
I don't think that is entailed by what I said at all. Nor do I think it follows from Canada's multicultural policy. There is sharing among cultures, although there is not a demand for assimilation. I have no idea where you get this "struggle to prevail" mentality from, it is certainly not my experience of Canada. The whole point of the "mosaic" metaphor is that it is not a "struggle to prevail" but instead a way of finding beauty through diversity.
damn that Trudeau is handsome and the right flavor of social democrat.
you're actually not bad yourself😊

Canada deserves a NOBLE PEACE PRIZE!
+Beal Wyene In 1957, the pri-minister won the peace prize. The United Nations Emergency Force was Pearson's creation, and he is considered the father of the modern concept of peacekeeping. Trudeau if following a long legacy of peace advocates.
+sigmet61 He is doing a great job! Heard many heartbreaking stories from ppl who had to leave their country, leaving behind family members, friends, lost their homes, savings... Only holding on to memories, restart their lives from scratch. Impressed by him & Canadians who welcome them. We can learn a lot from their courage & resilience, how lucky we are when u live in a place where u don't hear bombs constantly, especially the kids.
+Beal Wyene Angela Merkel would get it first.
+dothedeed Agreed! She should. I truly admire her hard work. It is unfortunate to hear so much negative publicity about her.
All of you are letting your emotions cloud your judgment.

Canada isn't a melting pot because instead of expecting immigrants to only think of themselves as Canadian we embrace their past culture
That's not what a melting pot is. A melting pot means a society of mixed cultural backgrounds and identities. It has nothing to do with assimilation.
+Ultimaton100 except it kinda does, If a Chinese immigrant comes to Canada he is Chinese-Canadian but if he goes to America he is American
+Ultimaton100 what you are referring to is a tossed salad. A melting pot implies that you all assimilate into one...... which is what happens when you melt a bunch of things together.....
+Shawn S no you're thinking of the old bowl of stew.. Common mistake

why can't America have a leader like Justin Trudeau..
Because not only is his progressivism STRONGLY against the American mindset, but that his policies are also against the intentions of the American Military Industrial Complex. Last time America had a president who went against it, the CIA assassinated him. The last time a presidential-candidate with progressive intentions at least ran for the position, his party illegally kicked him from the running in favor of someone closer to the needs of the establishment.

+eddizz0
Sure, if Canada has that much tax payers funded resources/money to resettle 10-20 million Syrian refuges, why not?
Can Canada divert that much money from other public projects? Nope.
There is a reason Canada -
accepts Syrian families: Syrian families have lower risk of becoming radicalized than single men
establishes private sponsor: encourage liberal Canadians to chip in while minimizing resentments from conservative counterparts.
only takes Syrians from refuge camps: Syrians from refuge camps are already vetted by UN
I may be a lefty, but I am not stupid.
Alex - you do realize some of their children will become single men? How many Canadian lives are worth you feeling good about yourself? Doesn't seem worth the risk to me. Good luck.

Yes, some of them may grow up to be single men.
Should a small percentage of them still choose to become radicalized after spending 20+ years in Canada, then the Canadian society I know of needs certain serious adjustments & soul searching.

It's honestly unbelievable how heartless Republicans are, it's disgusting. The Syrian refugees have already gone through hell. 0:29 He absolutely NAILED the way we Canadians say "sore-y" instead of "sorry."
God I love Canada. I have so much Canada envy
They have that special kind of racism and ignorance that would suit you well.
ilovebats10 omg me toooo
Fear is not a bad thing. It promotes rational judgement, and to weigh options carefully. The problem is when people take fear too far, to the point where one fears everything, where judgement becomes irrational yet still passes for something rational.
+Typical Gamer And that sums up the USA!
You missed your chance to quote Star Wars
***** all fine in '39? I'm hoping that was sarcasm.
can we just appreciate the perfectness of Justin Trudeau
Everyone: Wow Canada let's 49k refugees in their country.
Germany: Wow we took 1.1 Milloin!?
M Beckmann :P
Turkey took 4 million so everybody shut up
Thank you, Canada, for letting my father, uncles, grandmother and grandfather in in 1976 when fleeing fascism and again in 1990 when seeking a home, and my mother in 1995 and for being the home of my brother, cousins and I all these years. There are other countries in the world that will always hold a place in my heart but none will ever be like Canada. There’s no place like home. -an Argentine/Italian
I think that Canadian people is a good model. It makes me feel secure and peace. This is what I need at this time : hope.
Canada let my parents in during war in Somalia so they can be safe, and as a result, I was born and raised there. I'm glad.
I am a Canadian...I know only three things...1)Making my position better day by day, 2) Helping people whenever someone needs, 3) Protecting myself from the enemies...that's all
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau the sanest State leader I've heard! I'd move to Canada if I could take NYC with me :)
What an inspiration. this man is the future.
You guys are awesome
just watched it again, still makes me happy.
The interview with the honourable Justin Trudeau makes me proud to have voted Liberal.
Honourable? We're talking about the same Justin Trudeau, right? The same one who swears at MPs in the House of Commons?
+BekahDurphaird Pretty sure I saw Mulclair losing his cool too.
I've found someone who spells correctly!!!
I do believe Trudeau is a boxer. Hence the stone cold serious look he gave with that feigned coy "You might find that more difficult than you think."
Zoë Wylde I've seen those planks he does. I would believe it.
all the people from the middle east have a good reason not to like us.only reason im hesitant about it.glad other countries are helping but really,we have screwed up middle east since the 50s
Are u American?
Then why don't we give them a reason to like us for a change?
dustin whitesides I think you underestimate the size and diversity of the middle east, you have the saudis and Israelis at your beck and call, as filthy as their dealings are they're your allies
Ah, kind of like how the Ottomans and moors makes us not like them? History is not a strong subject among the morons that buy every narrative in the media. And watch some current events in the middle east ffs. Sunnis are fucking up the middle east.....
It's nice to see Americans own up to their mistakes
With such open arms inviting the refugees with kindness and treating them with dignity above all showing them how to prosper in their lives and making Canada prouder.
A big salute to Justin ❤️
