The Tragic Life of Judy Garland

  • #JudyGarland was one of Hollywood's biggest child stars. She starred in countless films and was almost worked to death by the industry. She was fed pills, cigarettes, and whatever they could to try keep her skinny and young looking. As Dorothy, Judy Garland was able to successfully make it back home, to a house filled with love and stability. Sadly, in the real world, she would never be able to truly make it over the rainbow.

This situation goes beyond Judy. This was a time when thin was in, and because females are known to gain weight quicker than men, the studios would put them on a strict diet. Like with the male actors, they would also give them pills to keep working. Judy wasn't the only one who fell victim to this vicious cycle. Marilyn Monroe, Mickey Rooney, and Elizabeth Taylor also fell victim to it. It was a problem well beyond MGM and I'm so glad we don't have that destructive system anymore.

The fact that child exploitation has always existed in Hollywood is disgusting. Shirley Temple also went through something similar at a younger age.
Hearing what she went through with that creepy man @5:30 was heartbreaking. I went through the same, but with a doctor instead. When I asked questions, he’d tell me it was normal and not to worry. I always knew it was wrong, something in my gut told me so. However, a person of power was telling me to trust them. It’s something you never forget. You learn to live with it.

I feel that they could, but it depends on how it's done. Kids can love acting and it can give them a future career in acting and preforming in which the child may love. Also let's not forget that some shows and movies need child actors to play child roles. But when it comes to a parent forcing their child to work as an actor, that's a big no and something that should be illegal as in some way, it has the same vibe as underground child sex trafficking videos where they force children to star in them. But without the sexual abuse part. Also if a child wants to quit the acting job they consensualy signed up for, they should have the right to do so.

You forgot to mention that Judy had a great relationship with her dad. When she talked about her dad, she never had a bad thing to say about him. In fact, she said she was the only one who was on her side. Unlike her mother, her father didn't force her into the business. He would always tell Judy if she wanted to not go into show business, she doesn't have to (unfortunately, he got overruled by her mother). So while Judy did have an unhappy childhood, at least she got a loving father.
Also, A Star is Born wasn't a hit until years later. At the time, it was an absolute flop, mainly because they had to edit it down due to the long 3 hour running time.

I love your videos on former child stars like Judy Garland because it always blows my mind how twisted things really are behind the scenes for these children. As a recovering addict I take full responsibility for my addiction that started over 20 yrs ago. I made my choices and I've been trying to get help for more than 15 yrs but lack of insurance has made it impossible and getting insurance with a pre existing illness is so costly. If help is that hard for me a nobody to find, I cannot imagine the life this woman endured. Being in the spot light, always having to be perfect and living day to day in such an abusive situation. Sadly this kind of shit goes on constantly. My heart goes out to anyone suffering from addiction and abuse that cannot find help (bc help is not as easy to get as your told) especially those not old enough or are to afraid to speak up.

She had such a sad life but with respect, I can understand her children reaching a point where they wanted some space and not to take care of her. Still, it's sad they had issues (despite loving each other) and judy was so alone to the point she had to sleep on the couches of fans. I hope her last husband was a comfort to her. I'm glad her children have spoken so lovingly of her since and that she has definately achieved respect from people since her death.

I actually read a biography about her when I was about 20 years old. It was so horrible what she went through. There’s so much more. Her mother would pretend to leave her when she was a child- like literally leave her in a hotel room and tell her she was leaving her only to come back a few hours later and act like it was all of a joke. She was never fully in control of her money either. It’s all insane!

Yes Slo4n, you're right. Its been almost 100 years since since Judy Garland has grown up in Tinsletown and not much has changed in the Industry. They should be called out and held accountable. They have ruined countless children stars lives, and it needs to stop. When I was kid, my biggest dream was to be rich and famous, now as an adult, knowing everything that child stars have gone through, I'm so glad i never became a household name and all the horrors that go along with it.

This Poor Child, it's a miracle she survived!! My take on this is, neither parent wanted her AT ALL, so they felt if she must be born they would use her any way they could for as long as they could and because this was so obvious to all around, they too did the same thing. She was not acknowledged as a human, she was never treated with love and empathy. I had a similar experience growing up but no where near to this degree. My heart goes out to her as it must have affected every aspect of her life till the day she died❤

The fact that the way Judy was treated is the Hollywood Blueprint for child actors and it needs to change. Her family and MGM got too much success from abusing that poor kid like that and that’s why they were able to pull off doing shit like this to Brittany until now. This is a fairly new industry still in a lot of ways
Please deep dive MGM. There is good reason Shirley Temple signed with Fox.
