- New Line Cinema announced plans for an American remake of Train to Busan back at the start of 2021 and many had objections to the idea, myself included. I just wanted to have a discussion about how western cinema has a history of butchering overseas classics and inserting unrelated big names to maximize box office revenue, but not focus on the film's longevity and impact.

haven't seen the original yet, but like with every other american remake of a foreign film i expect it will be completely inferior to the original and most likely just flat out terrible.

A realistic american zombie movie wouldn't be exciting. It would be everyone rushing home and staying indoors gun ready to shoot anything that walks on their lawn. The infestation wouldn't even be able to spread the first few zombies would be gunned down

So I was arguing with my little sister and her sorority friends last week who all attend Sacramento state, they had to watch a foreign film for class and insisted the Korean movie “Parasite” was “sooooo dumb” because “the acting was terrible”, so I asked if they watched dubbed or subbed and they of course watched dubbed, I said “jeez you watched the entire thing like that??” To which they responded “no we only got about 15 minutes in then shut it off”.
I insisted they needed to watch it subbed but they wouldn’t even consider the idea of subtitles because “reading is hard”…
That to me is the epitome of closed minded laziness.
Some of the greatest movies ever made are foreign and have subtitles (eg Seven Samurai , voted among the best 10 films ever made)
Man, no wonder people today are getting more and more dumber. I even watch English speaking movies with subtitles.

I know right I remember when I started watching anime and I felt this sense of wonder that I still get when watching non American media. Like the movie “the platform” on Netflix is an amazing Spanish movie, very interesting highly recommend it.
I have to say sadly that I'm one of those people. I just can't read the subtitles fast enough and comprehend an action scene at the same time. That's why I feel the need to actually pause the film whenever there's long lines of dialog or a really intense action scene which kinda ruins the experience for me a bit.
The subtitles help but not enough its either me reading to fast to slow or just read and not look what's happening so western remakes or dubs for me

I don't blame them, there is nothing wrong with that but they do miss out on foreign films. On top of people who just dislike it you have older people too who just can't handle reading at a quick pace while watching the movie at the same time. What really needs to happen is companies hiring better voice actors for dubs.
Let's all be real, it's probably going to suck like most american remakes.

The Departed is a remake of Infernal Affairs (a HK film), and that movie turned out to be amazing (according to a lot of people, i haven’t seen it)
I don’t expect much of this remake. Even if it’s shot for shot the same, something is almost always lost in translation. I see another Rec/Quarantine situation. The remake tries very hard and I applaud its efforts. It’s not a terrible movie but it’s missing the special ingredient from the original.
That being said, I’d have never discovered Rec if I hadn’t sat through Quarantine first. So, perhaps it’s not the worst thing.

And what you said reminds me of something FilmCritic said about the Lorax- the movie was terrible (*cough*, I like it but whatever), but it made people go back and read the original book, which pushed the environmental message more effectively and timelessly. So, even if the new one is meh, it’ll inspire a portion of the population to seek out the original
I was just about to say the same thing, i saw quarantine first i liked it plus it came out at time where wasn't anything really interesting on the horror tip, my daughter brought this one to my attention because she knows i'm very picky about my horror movie's, but then one day seaching for more horror movie's i found rec, & what a shocker same movie but not the same movie as quarantine, i forget where this movie was made but it most definitely kicked the shit out of the american version, & yes i also quarantine 2 & rec 2 same result.

Honestly, even if the American version is bad, at the end of the day, we will always have the original to watch as many times as we please.
I have no problem watching and having to read the subtitles. I recently saw Train to Busan, and it felt so natural after like 7 minutes that I completely forgot that I was reading them, and it almost was like I hearing it in English. So, what i'm saying is, don't deny a movie just because you have to use subtitles, it won't be as annoying as it sounds.

I watched Train to Busan and actually liked it a lot.
I don't really feel like we need a remake of it but I'd be down for movies that take place in that universe.
What I love about train to busan is that I think they used real trains like look at them. They have dust and dirt and everything. It just feels more natural since there’s not a lot of filter to it just real lighting.
Please, America... Stop trying to remake or "reimagine" Asian media; we never do it right. Especially anime, which, personally, I don't think should EVER have live-action adaptations by _anyone_ !!!

I've been watching foreign language films all of my life. From Samurai movies with nearly invisible "white-on-white" subtitles to "yellow/black outlined" subtitles of current movies on Turner Classic Movies' TCM Imports. Whenever Hollyweird's cookie cutter films get me down, I "take a trip around the world" for a movie like "Central Station" (1998).
I remember Netflix disrespecting me, and starting me automatically in dub.
Obviously it had a dub, it was on Netflix.... Weeb.
The ending of Train to Busan legitimately made me cry. I highly doubt the remake will bring me even close to that feeling
Honestly this doesn't need a remake, I watched it dozens of times and it's perfect, I could care less about the fact that I have to read the subtitles, it's an awesome movie and a "american remake" of it just sounds like your dissing the original because it was made in a different country
It makes no sense to put this movie in an American setting when it's deeply rooted in historical and societal conflicts specific to Korea, they would have to rewrite the script beyond recognition, and that means they'd be better off just making a zombie movie unrelated to this gem, I'm so mad

As someone who’s taken trains going into Boston a lot, let me tell you, they are CRAB! The early trains I’ve taken are usually a only bit delayed, but the later ones going out, they are an average of 10-20 minutes late (the one I take is usually 30 minutes delayed) It’s easier to take the bus, even if the train is slightly discounted for people traveling for healthcare. If it’s really going to be set here, everyone will die in the first ten minutes.

I'm a 35-yo movie buff who's been going back in time to discover every good movie. Whenever you think you've seen it all, you find a new gem. I recently "uncovered" 'F/X' 1 & 2 and 'Black Rain', some of the most entertaining 80s movies. And that's after I have been watching South Korean movies for over decade.
The only reason this remake might not suck 100% is Timo Tjahjanto. He knows how to make a gory & tense movie. He's the only hope this movie got.
I had the unfortunate experience of watching an English dub of "Train To Busan." The spoken dialogue was the same as the subtitles, but something was missing. Each major/minor character has a distinctive sounding voice that is lost when the dubbing pool is too small. The impact of the Korean dialogue at certain key points became as limp as overcooked pasta. In short, what we've got here is a failure to communicate. Is James Cameron doing anything/looking for another mountain to conquer? As for the final bit of advice, I "get on the train" whenever a naive reviewer does. Each experience is different; recently I saw two reactors gossip throughout the movie like Valley Girls and were quite blase during the final moments of "Train To Busan." (They failed the Empathy test.)
It just felt really weird how America wanted to remake this. Almost felt like they were saying "wow what a cool idea, love it. It would be better to take out the Asians though" Just really weird.

Also unsurprisingly, they wanted to add white actors to their live adaptation of Avatar, which would make no sense because it is only asian and native american rep but hey, you gotta make the americans feel comfortable!

But the part about using well-known actors, Gongyu, the main protagonist in Train to Busan is a famous actor in Korea like everyone knows him. Ma dong seok too, the buff guy is a super well-known famous actor too, so I don't think it really matters if the casts are famous or not, what matters is if they can fulfill their roles to a point that everyone forgets that actor's real-life persona. And the character Seok-woo, does care about his daughter, and honestly, there are a lot of fathers out here in America that can relate to his character. Not all fathers are super caring and their form of caring can be portrayed differently. Such as, a father who cares about his family, but would do selfish acts necessary that his family won't approve of, but he still would because that's his way of taking care of his family. Seok woo's character development came from his willingness to care about others besides his family, not his daughter. He cared, but he didn't have a strong enough connection because he was a busy working man who wanted to provide financial stability for his daughter rather than spending time with her.
What you said about subtitles is completely on the money. The Red Light Green Light song that the robot girl sings adds so much more to the eerieness and tension of that scene.
TBH if it's pretty much just an English version of the movie that pays homage to the original that's the only way I'd be interested. If they dumb it down and inject more action to appeal to wider audiences it gonna be shit, no doubt, which is probably what is gonna happen.

What was wrong with subtitles?! I know that as soon as that cursed film pops up on Netflix, everyone I’ve told about will think I’m talking about the American one, and no! I’m talking about the beautiful Korean one. I bet they’ll even give Ma Dong Seok a RED jacket, and somehow make the wife give birth to a zombie in the film. Oh, and put in guns, always guns. And what will they do for the song at the end? I don’t think “Mary Had a Little Lamb” will suffice.
Also, Train to Busan isn’t a horror, it’s just a tragedy with jump scares.

As someone who lives in the Bay Area, Caltrain would make a perfect train for a “Train to Busan” style apocalypse.
I would call the movie “Train to Gilroy.”
Here's my thought: People who refuse subtitles probably help keep the non English speaking filmmaking higher quality. They have to fight extra hard to make sure people are interested, so they will often make better quality stuff. That and the fact it's a young industry outside the US are what I think make European and Asian cinema come out with some good movies and shows.
I'm not sure about a "young industry". People in all countries have been making movies as long as in the U.S., and sometimes (e.g. Europe) even longer. However, since the advent of sound and English cultural dominance, foreign language movies disappeared from U.S. cinemas, except for art houses, though they still made movies for themselves. Now with Asian movies becoming more popular worldwide, you know what? Maybe they're caring less and less about connecting to the English language market.

Chinese people aren't doing anything to connect to us. Or Japan. They do their own thing and it works. To go big, Korean people HAVE to venture outside of their comfort zone. You know why, idiot? Because Korea is physically a tiny country. You know what's in tiny countries? A language and culture that only a small, concentrated amount of people know. Korea is not like China. It's a miracle at all that people have taken a liking to them in such big numbers. Not because they don't deserve it, but because Korea is so fucking small. And believe it or not, size DOES matter when you want to spread something like culture. Nobody hears about Scottish movies either, and they are considered an acceptable white English-speaking country. They are a small country with rich culture. Most people would have to go out of their way to dig to find a TV show made by Scots. It's really not about subtitles. Sure it plays a part, but it's a miniscule part. They disappeared because they know the odds are against them.
Is it such an Alien concept that other countries/cultures could organise their goals without pursuing a US interest as some Holy Grail? No the world "doesn't fight hard to get daddy US's attention. It just does it's thing (especially since most countries approach cinema from the angle of art rather than business) and manages just fine with domestic audiences and arthouses.

If you love the English subtitled version of "Train To Busan," DON'T "do the English dub!" A TH-cam reactor viewed the dubbed version and IT SUCKED! The dialogue was the same as the English subtitles on the Korean original, but the voice actors were either too few or misplaced emphasis. It wasn't as bad as an English dubbed "Hong Kong Kung Fu movie," but it was like limp Pasta. Each major/minor character in "Train To Busan" has a distinct/unique voice that was lost in the "not enough voice actors" version. English subtitles Rule!

As much as I'd love to watch some of the foreign films on the cinema, it just makes more sense for me to do it at home.

As much as i want to have faith in the production team because of the films they've made in the past. Im just not sure how its gonna go until the film comes out. Honestly, if the production team is able to do what they want for the film as long as they understand the source material thoroughly, id be more inclined to give it a try (even as a Korean-American who straddles both the korean and american culture). The biggest scares for me would be if the production team cant or is unable to understand the reasons for why train to busan was made and why it works and also massive studio interference. From what i know , Hollywood's track record isnt that great in this aspect. Ive only heard of two korean films being remade and that both adaptions were inferior to the originals: Oldboy and My Sassy Girl. And I guess a k drama remake: The good doctor which i havent seen but it looks like people in general really like but whenever ive brought up to my coworkers or friends (who've watched it) that its an american remake of a k drama, they dont believe me or are surprised. I havent watched the remake though.
But i guess we'll just have to wait and see. Ill reserve my full judgment till the film actually releases since i still like to give films and tv shows a chance to impress me.
I'd say the only thing that would make me interesting in an American Train to Busan (Or Train to Boston) is if they decide to make it in continuity with the original Train to Busan and Peninsula. Then it could go into commentary about other things and even how disasters can repeat if we get complacent.

How about a space craft to Mars? Collisions with space debris would "black out" the passageways from time to time, and you are in a "fast moving sealed tube" that may have the odd space station stop between here and there. Taking it another way, express submarines between continents have been proposed since the days of Jules Verne. Alternate realities could put the action into a "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" techworld, with Dirigible-based comfort stops.
It will be like the hangover movies but with a zombie twist.

I have a mixed feelings about this upcoming remake project to "Train to Busan. But I know the director:(Timo Tjahjanto) because I watch some of his movies before. I will not be surprised if some people never watch any of his movies.
I watch the movies he directed such as " The ABC's of Death:(Segment- L is for Libido), V/H/S 2:(Segment- Safe Haven), Headshot, The Night comes to Us, and V/H/S 94:(Segment- The Subject)

I still think the "best remake" of an asian property goes to Edge of Tomorrow, adapted from the manga All You Need is Kill, yet it still suffers from the same issues as most remakes do: the loss of core ideas and themes.
SPOILERS AHEAD
All You Need is Kill features a regular soldier getting the power to return back in time every time he dies, focusing on every detailed iteration as he slowly gets better and better before ending in a heartbreaking way where in order to move forward, he has to kill the one person who can truly understand him. He continues to fight the war.
Edge of Tomorrow features a cowardly officer doing the same thing, slowly getting more skilled and trying to survive. However, the film does a cool thing where each iteration becomes blurred together and you, the audience, are being tricked about how many times he's done this. It ultimately ends with everyone living, him finding his crush, and ending the war.
While both stories do focus on the bleak nature of live, die, repeat, AYNiK does the ultimate follow through with its ending, while EoT plays it safe. I love both of them, but it's obvious that EoT was adapted for a Western Summer Blockbuster audience. The aliens, who in comic format, looked terrifying as black-balls with teeth, spikes, and unnatural grins, would look stupid in an irl film. The setting was changed to Europe, so it makes sense to have English and American actors. The film also changes the pacing since it has only 2ish hours to make an impact rather than two volumes. Most notably are the death scenes, where AYNiK had beautiful, horrifying illustrations of the MC getting killed, while EoT played it for more comedic purposes.
The reason why the Train to Busan remake angers me more than EoT is that EoT didn't pretend to be AYNiK. Plus, AYNiK wasn't that big and I don't consider it a masterpiece like TtB. If someone watched EoT and didn't read AYNiK, I can safely say they didn't miss out on much. But if some watched Train to BOSTON and stopped there, that would piss me off because they would never see the beautiful story it originated from.
Then again, I love The Rock, and him as Sang-Hwa would be hilarious.

I’ve seen Headshot and The Night Comes for Us. They are pretty entertaining action movies but story and characters could use some more depth. The action however is the Raid level of good, well I mean they have the same Indonesian action team so makes sense.

I think part of what makes Korean movies good IS the culture. As an American, my thoughts of "why don't they just" are quickly answered when I remind myself that I have to consider the culture, social norms, etc. If anything it makes me sit and shut up and watch as to understand it more and it pulls me in. Obviously I don't live there, so maybe over there they roll their eyes at the movies the same way we in America roll our eyes at our movies, BUT as an American watching it, it makes me pay more attention to the characters and their motivations and story arcs. I feel like I have to pay more attention because it isn't all just surface level stuff and cliches like American characters.
TTB isn't going to have that as an American version because it's going to be set in a different place with different customs, norms, etc. It literally just can't capture the same thing because American eyes view the world differently than Korean ones because our worlds ARE different. New Line would have to actually sit down and make the adjustments for the same sort of impact for the American market and let's be real, they aren't gonna do that. It takes too much work.
My first question upon seeing this is.. why? This seems like a straight up waste of money. Sure it's not a perfect movie nothing is but there's nothing wrong enough with the original for an American remake to be necessary.

I have been saying this for YEARS!! Ever since we started remaking Asian horror movies....i.e The Ring, The Uninvited, Shutter, The Eye..and on and on. Then it went from remaking foreign movie to remaking Western movies. So, yes, there are very few original ideas coming out of Hollywood!
You should make a video on Rec. It is another great zombie "infected" movie. As a Spanish speaker I loved the setting and characters. It would be great if you make a review or zombie sins video on it.

Movie idea: A dimensional protection agency has to deal with all the different versions of New York City, making sure they get destroyed or saved according to how that dimensions timeline needs to add up, our story follows a group of agents that is dealing with a saboteur from the same agency that is trying to unify the dimensions because they are tired of dealing with too much work.

This movie really doesn't need a remake but they could use this opportunity to subvert the expectations of people who alredy saw the original. What if instead of a change from selfish to selfless its the complete opposite that by the end of the movie the dad that was originally a good person is corrupted by the actions of other characters in the outbreak. It would be interesting if this remake is something like an opposite reflection of the original but I highly doubt they would do anything interesting instead of telling the same story but worse

Couldn't have said it better myself. Train To Busan was the only only zombie movie where I legitimately sobbed, especially at the end. I feel that Korean made films really understand character development and story telling with Peninsula being the exception.

Timo Tjahjanto also made a foreign action film entitled "The Night Comes for Us (2018)", this film can be watched on Netflix. If you like action martial arts movies mixed with horror elements, then you might like this movie.
I love Timo as a filmmaker, but this still makes me worried because of the screenwriter. The writer of the movie wrote The Nun and Annabelle, two terrible Conjuring movies. Timo's style could save the movie from having a bad script but it's still a fucking bad script. But still a director still can have a misfire. You look at the remake of Oldboy directed by Spike Lee, a very talented Oscar winning director and yet he really failed miserably on the remake. That's what i'm mostly worried about. If this was an original zombie movie, i might like it more but since it's a remake of a masterpiece, that's the problem here. Watching this movie need you to think about what makes the original so great. They need to make a great movie while also honor the original movie
One thing that made Train to Busan good was its earnest look into societal issues without being preachy. Those societal critiques were typically acted out by the characters' actions instead of explicitly explained unless they were relevant to the main character. Those societal issues were specific to S. Korea so in the remake they should be of course critiques of American society. I'd want to the movie to use contemporary American issues like the intensifying Left vs Right culture war tribalism and wealth inequality to be central themes to the plot. You'd use modern day tropes and archetypes such as Karens/Kyles, terminally online SJWs, and trumpists for example as memes that unironically accurately describe the dangerous disparity in thought and reason that will destroy society if left unchecked.
Set the movie in a near future post-covid America and another virus has emerged, but instead of thinking of ways to be prepared but we (Americns) brush the concern away because "Covid wasn't that bad, we'll be fine." You'd have the main survivors of the movie taking part in a Karen situation with people recording the incident when suddenly zombies happen because no one stopped to check on a dying person. The movie will be about a group of survivors of varying backgrounds overcoming their flaws to become better people but not before their flaws gets people killed and ultimately causes the most toxic of their group to sabotage everyone. Most of the group dies but they die as better people than they were before.

I was originally one of the people that didn't like subtitles. Then my sister and I moved in together 8 years ago and I started enjoying subtitles. Then I noticed Train to Busan .... good God that movie was incredible in the original version. Then like 2 years ago I ATTEMPTED the English version and became Ron White "Nope. Bullshit. I ain't doin that. I'm not and I'll tell ya Why. That's not Train To Busan! That's a big pile of shit to jump over and I'm Not Very Goddamn Agile!!"

Wow i didnt realize so many people are missing out just because they dont want to read "subtitles" lol crazy. The only time i dont read the subtitles is if i'm too tired and falling asleep but even then I dont put on the english dubs i just fall asleep listening to them in their original language. Then again i grew up loving books and reading.
I won't bother watching this remake untill it hits the bargain bin or can be streamed for pennies. I can't think of a single American remake or "reimagining" (the term they use when they blatantly change as much as possible to fit a Western audience) of a good foreign film that manages to be decent representation of the original.
The few that do well, really lean in to "We gonna 'Merica up this bitch" and basically become a different but enjoyable enough parody of the original.

As a filmmaker you don't get to depend on the success of other cultural remakes in order to get people to be less critical. When you take an amazing movie and claim to "remake" it into a different culture people are going to be skeptical, whether it was successful in the past or not. because at the end of the day that's one or two dozen successes in a sea of disrespectful, mediocre, or just bad films.
Such as Rec being reimagined into a fairly mediocre film.
It's to be expected that not everyone is gonna be thrilled when you take on the task of turing a good Korean movie into a good American movie, since the first thing most people think is bad acting and cash grabs.
I personally see no reason for Train to Busan ro be remade into a American film. The original was successful, had good acting, good cinematography, a good message, and overall handled the social issues the movie was trying to cover well. You have big shoes to fill and overall I can't see any reason for this film to be remade other than money. Just people trying to profit off the successful concept and plot of a movie that's veiwed as the movie that revived the zombie genre.
This is why when I watch anything I normally watch anime

You have the freedom to make a remake, just have the wisdom to do it right or not at all. As for remakes, a lot of countries do if they have their own film industry, as for fan made fillms if they have the time, money and want. The one thing we don't have to do, watch them, you're not forced to.

What could make the American version interesting if it they do some form of commentary about American culture - like how the older generations feel that they’re being replaced by the younger more progressive generation and both gens are stuck on the train and neither want to help the other thus making it a lot more believable that everyone’s on edge and don’t want to help, how the ‘essential workers’ are the ones the father look down on but as the story progresses he’s more on their side as he sees how much sacrifice they’ve had to make (maybe have one of the teens having to work two jobs for his family while still attending school idk), and also about the stigmatization one gets from their career and job in life vs who they are as a person - like the homeless man could have been someone who was an essential worker until he was no longer valued and thus replaced and it made him have a huge breakdown.
They could still do a thing about the working class vs upper class, but have it be within an environment in which the upper class have to answer for what they’ve done and come to terms with that the ‘lemmings’ are humans too - which could be something that Suck is still adamantly against because he’s more concerned with saving his own life and fear-mongering others so that he would still be in charge.
Might it save the movie? I don’t know. I doubt it will unless the person making the screenplay understands the reasons for why Train to Busan was created and what it’s commentary is about. Otherwise we are just gonna get another zombie movie that, maybe while fun, won’t leave you feeling impacted or thinking about the message of the film.
Hearing the language while understanding through the subtitles is much more entertaining than hearing it dubbed!

It's easy to read subtitles and watch a videos. I mean growing I always had subtitles on to learn the words and how to spell them for my classes in elementary school. So I mean doing it at a early age maybe why I like it so much.

Whenever I try to show my family a movie or series that isn't in english they ask me to read the subtitles for them whilst were watching it but that really doesn't bother me because at least they're interested in it
