This song did something for me in a deep spiritual way, the line you mention made me cry but they were tears of understanding, i don't know it's really hard to explain!
She has such an unusual distinctive voice but it is very effective. Its a very country voice but lends itself beautifully to folk music....love it love it ..... raises me up to the next level
Hands down, this is the best song ever about the art of songwriting. It belongs in a textbook. Brilliant! I saw Iris perform last night but unfortunately she didn't have time to include this. Her voice has not lost an ounce of its charm and emotion.
Iris DeMent...what can you say? Absolutely fantastic...brings so much joy...and all 4 albums are brilliant. The world is a better, happier place because of her. Her beautiful honesty, sincerity shines through... Iris DeMent what can I say? Thanx...
What is it about a well timed key change that always drives home a song like this? Iris is simply a treasure. Like all my favorite artists, she wears every lyric in her expressions.
In Bonnie Scotland with Aly Bain on Violin & Phil Cunningham on Accordion,SUPERB,recorded in Killiecrankie on the A9 just short of Pitlochry and the beautiful Blair Atholl.Blair Castle is where I played when I was a wee boy when I stayed with my Granny & Grandad Scott, and the memories are still there even though I'm 66 years old now.....Murray
This is pure class - Iris Dement at her best, great backing from Donal Lunny, Phil Cunningham, Russ Barenberg, Jay Ungar and Molly Mason - Wow, you won't see this again.
I had the great chance to see Iris not only once, but TWICE in Petaluma, California at the Mystic Theater...afterwards, as MOST of the audience had left, she came done into the audience and talked with me and signed the CD's that I bought...she is so real and humble...love the way she dresses...right off the rack and her "orthopedic" shoes are a hoot...IRIS, I love you...
At rare times special people have creations of nearly perfect beauty. This is one of those times. This song comes together like a complex puzzle balanced from side to side and top to bottom. It speaks to the heart directly. I love it.
It _is_ magical. Not may people can write such a perfect song, but Iris also has, "Our Town", "Let the Mystery Be" and "Easy's Gettin' Harder Every Day, each one a magical gem.
Has there ever been a better concept for collaboration than Transatlantic Sessions? Wouldn't every artist dream of being a part of such a wonderous thing? I think everyone here knew that Iris was creating a special magic, and Iris knew that she was free to do so with these empathetic musicians.
Now I discovered her i last november and is indeed captivated! I feel blessed to have been in concert with her, 2x standing ovation, and very justly so!!!!!;=) I, for one would not trade that moment for anything! Like everyone here knows, she is the Real Deal, and for those of us who know,, well,,, a True Soul she verily is!
She sings and it takes me back to Tennessee to my wife’s grandma who would break out singing with her beautiful voice...raised in the hills and going to church.
What a wonderful artist! She was one of my dad's favorites , we just said our last "good-byes" to him earlier this year, so I find myself listening to his favorite music a lot and what a treat it has been for me.
I consider myself very lucky to have met and watched her perform about a year ago in Richmond, VA. She is a wonderful person with a very sweet voice. A true American treasure. Thank you Iris for playing Mamas Opry for me.
bravo to ms. Dement and her band...what class act and such grace...destined to be a classic...one of my favorites...kudos....ps, what a yodel, surely she must be part German
Country Folk music came over from 'Old Europe' back when it was a great power of influence in the world. Maybe some day 'Old Europe' will find itself and return to greatness, only by God willin', that is.
These are the cream of the crop as far as musicians go in this genre love the way they dovetail Iris D...they put a lot into this incredible piece....she in a league of her own...much appreciated here in Ireland...
Loves the little shindigs like these. My mother is gone to wexford tonight with my sister for an ould knees up, few guitars, accordion, fiddle etc, the good proper nights in a little country pub.
Thank you for posting this most beautiful song that I've ever heard. I sent it to my son with the suggestion he listen to the words carefully and take it to heart. He said he didn't quite understand. I told him that maybe only us old folks could understand but the only counsel I could give him is that he already started writing the melody that would be there in his place....my grandsons.
Where did she go??? I love Iris more than life itself...her voice is so amazing to my ears. Her first record is a true classic, that the rest of the world seemed to miss.
I saw her at Merlefest. While she was singing, a mosquito or fly flew into her mouth and interrupted her song. She stopped and excused herself for the interruption and started the tune all over. What a tremendous performer. It might have been this song, but I do not remember.
Now, if that's not a compliment, nothing is!;=) Pray that she will make more releases and return to comfort us on this side of the Dam with her most special Voice. How could one not love such a person!
such a pure voice that cuts to the deepest parts, I could listen all day and go to a place where memories of the past and the people I loved are there.
How can I ever listen to another song again? Someone once told me a story of a friend of his who had gone to Australia and there somewhere in the outback had found a place of ultimate beauty. In fact a place that was so perfect that he just couldn't bear it, so he took his own life right there in that place. Listening to Iris sing this song, gives me an idea of what he must have felt.
"An arm's just an arm til its wrapped around a shoulder" One of the best lines in song ever written
This song did something for me in a deep spiritual way, the line you mention made me cry but they were tears of understanding, i don't know it's really hard to explain!
You're not wrong...John.
The greatest dimples in music.
30 years on, and I can't hear this song without crying. Everyone looks so young in this video, those that are still with us...
Hard to say what's more beautiful, Iris or the song. :)

Love the way Iris presents her singing and lyrics to her songs. They have such wonderful story lines. Keep recording Iris, and I'll keep listening!
Enables the envisioning of a more precious world...pure grace for sure.
"So hard to make every note sound just right" - that's why she is so, so good; she puts her heart and soul into every note of every song.
What a true, wholesome talent. Pure country.
Nothing like her....just amazing voice. Well done miss Iris

She is just too good to make it big in popular music.

arromac I was hoping to hear the yodel twice, at least.
Country Folk music came over from 'Old Europe' back when it was a great power of influence in the world. Maybe some day 'Old Europe' will find itself and return to greatness, only by God willin', that is.
Check out "Let the Mystery Be" or 'Our Town" or any of a number of her other tunes. She is just wonderful.

I can’t believe I only found her after the tragic death of John Prine. She is a treasure.
Saw her live in Aberdeen 21 years ago. She did this song with just her guitar and there wasn’t a dry eye in the theatre .
It doesn't matter when you found her; it only matters that you did.
sometimes there's just no substitute for Iris, the best singer in country music since Hank Williams
Iris is phenomenal...I actually heard her first sing in the movie Songcatcher..and I had to have more!
Beautiful job Iris!
Where did she go??? I love Iris more than life itself...her voice is so amazing to my ears. Her first record is a true classic, that the rest of the world seemed to miss.

a much loved singer in ireland - love her facial expressions - what a voice
One more thing to love about Ireland, then.
happy christmas to all
Sweet beautiful bluegrass music - like the wind on the wheat plains...
One of my favourite singer/songwriters. Excellent Iris!
Iris DeMent is so... special. I am entranced every time I hear her sing. The nose wrinkle is pretty endearing as well.
Everyone is focusing and commenting on Iris, and rightfully so, but the other musicians are terrific as well. This is a terrific video!!!
such a pure voice that cuts to the deepest parts,
I could listen all day and go to a place where
memories of the past and the people I loved are there.
I just can't get enough of iris and this song.
me either, there is something about it that makes you cry, those tears, the ones more than the heart can express
Can't wait to see Iris in the U.K , when this pandemic is over.
I,m not Northamerican but this is the unic I love of this Country, this music
Wish there was a complete showing of this session. It is great.
Buy the DVDs they're worth every penny.
She is such an angel, I wish she would record more often but what she gives us is quality.
Iris is a gift. The voice of an angel.
Her yodel at the end just breaks my heart. Luv ya...
I love watching her expressive face (with the dimple) as she sings so earnestly.
I was pretty bummed by Nanci Griffith’s passing, but we still have voices like Iris.
Pure and clean. Simple in it's complexity. Complex in it's simplicity.
Sometimes It is just so simple and sweet! thanks so very much.
When people talk about "the best minds of my generation," this is who I think about first. Really.
One of the absolute most authentic country singers in America. I'm in love with her!
I love Iris too and the songs she sings have meaning and story
It helps that she's gorgeous
Me too Bless !
Amen
