I used to watch Chad Smith back in the 70s in a local Detroit band called Toby Redd. I think its great that he made it to the big time but honestly there are lots of drummers here in Detroit that are very talented that you will never hear. That goes for every city inthe world. There is no such thing as the best. When you start believing your gre atness you stop progressing . Play music because you love it and for no other reason. For 99.9% of us we will never be rich or famous but that doesnt mean we cant be excellant musicians. Practice as much as you can and you will be surprised how well you can play. You may not be famous but you can a well re s pected musician in your r own right
Groove is much, much harder to master/obtain than ANY technical ability. Groove can't be taught, it comes naturally. Speed and all that other nonsense can be taught. Groove > everything else.
Great observation by Chad is that he knows to listen to his band mates and build off them. Also knowing that improve is ok when you know how to do it. Solid drummer.
Great points. Take chances, listen, trust the band (not always easy) Changing it up erynight. I'd go nuts playing the same exact thing every night. Peart is a perfect example. He's been playing that same solo EVERY NIGHT for how many years? Although there's lots of math in a band like Rush, I've never heard em take a chance. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be out there. Chad gets it.
Will Ferrell will definitely play Chad in the Chili Peppers biopic. And Paul Rudd will play Anthony, and Ben Stiller will play Flea. Tell me I'm wrong.
regarding body movement, look at(one of my favorite drummers)Frank Beard. He always looks so calm & relaxed behind his kit & makes it sound s'oh sweet(my opinion). it's what ever blows your hair back. I was watching a good bassist on here TJH3113 & i was going to message him and say you look like a statue when you play.. get in to it.. shake your hips a little.. but he's a great bassist & if it 'aint broke, don't fix it. for me, it's always been, I don't dance to good music.. good music makes me dance. I asked my drummer once if he minds when i hit ghost notes on my bass strings.(it's a bad habit of mine i've learned to stop). He said what ever helps keep your rhythm.
Chad Smith a reliable, steady drummer who works well with other musicians because he doesn't get in the way. He's a hard-hitting Ringo Starr. I think his style is a bit basic and the "best of all-time" moniker that some people put on him are wildly out of touch. He's good. The hi-hat foot insight is pretty cool. I'm self-taught and my left foot is a little retarded (I do not play metal haha)
+suburbanindie Good analogy of Chad and I just love solid meter type players like this. Mike Vanderhule also comes to mind from the band Y & T. That acrylic kit featured in this video is sick!
***** Its only my opinion and taste, chad a has a lesser vocabulary, but has more feel and groove than PC. That is what i look for in a drummer. Not trying to start an argument. And yes my profile picture might actually suggest I am a drummer. I respect your opinion though regardless and thanks for the reply
Well the phrase "no one could play like _____" is kind of to be loosely interpreted. It not necessarily a ranking of technical skill or fame or anything. I guess the easiest way to liken it is that, as you said, you think Chad has a better "groove". I think groove is what separates all those musicians who are on equal levels of skill. Groove is how you use what you've learned to do, and what makes you stand out from someone else. So what Chad said about Phil is sort of what you're saying about Chad.
***** eh PC is obviously a legend overall but as myself being a drummer I can tell you Chad Smith's playing is so unique - covering his songs his taste in writing his drum parts the way he grooves I mean this guy is FUNK!
The physical therapist has almost indefinitely been on some serious psychiatric medications in the past. I can tell by his abnormal facial expressions/hand movements and general zonked out-ness. Edit: the interviewer as well.
Well.... I didn't think the standard brainless troll reply would take that long to come up. There's always some stupid fan boy, incapable of handling someone else's opinion. The guy is a good drummer, but way overrated. And this is because all the ignorant teens out there cheering for RHCP like it is the ultimate groove band, when actually everything they did after One Hot Minute is crap. Now enjoy and feel free to deploy all your bullshit, I'm not interested in silly debates with stupid people.
I had to pause this several times to go play the drums. He's so inspiring. I want to be like Chad Smith.
YES, every time I see Chad I go play
If anybody thinks that Chad's playing isn't technical, you have no idea what dynamics are.

Damn, word dude! Fuckin word.
This is true, all though it's a miserable existence being born with a gift that you can't share.
well said. cheers mate!
I love Chad. He grooves so well. Shows that you don't have to be really technical to be really impressive
Groove is much, much harder to master/obtain than ANY technical ability. Groove can't be taught, it comes naturally. Speed and all that other nonsense can be taught. Groove > everything else.
LiamRenaut I think you might be wrong.

Only time will tell.
Maaan, Chad Smith to me is the best drummer. I love his style! He is my idol. Thank you for making this video.
Great observation by Chad is that he knows to listen to his band mates and build off them. Also knowing that improve is ok when you know how to do it. Solid drummer.

ted hot chili peppers were great writers. had great guitarist, bassist, and drummer. their vocalist is kinda meeehhh. a good writer nonetheless
he certainly rocks the shit out of them cymbals... and drums... ; )
13:00 - In my band I call it the "Chad Smith bob"
nice one
9:44 that was the moment :,)
I think the guy in the red beanie on the left headbanging is his drum tech
thats right he also plays keyboards in the band in some songs
Beast.
I guarantee he shit himself at 10:14 when Terry fucking Bozzio told him "That was the shit!" after that
6:08 Chad looks his most Will Ferrell here :)

It only sounds basic in the mix. The level of complexity and Dynamics in the drums only tracks is quite stunning
He's not a hard-hitting Ringo Starr
GLaDOS' voice (intro) :o
he is the best drummer in the world!!!
that's the best most uneducated statement on the entirety of youtubd

this video would have been a lot better if they had GIVEN HIM FUCKING STICKS!!
Chad seems kinda tense in this video for some reason :/
