The Cars, Weezer, Pixies and Devo... yep, agreed... Although, I'd say Sharp brought this influence to the first two Weezer albums and that's what made them great... after he left, not so much.

The Rentals is my all time favorite band... why? I never tire of their music and lyrics. It's as fresh as it was when I first heard it. Unlike countless others, I've listened to 7 More Minutes at least 300 times over and again, and have yet to 'burn it out'. Thanks for this vid. Best song is debatable. But this song is a great example of how Weezer without Matt is awful. How is it that Matt can create great music on his own, but everything Weezer post Matt is awful?

I agree with SendMeBelow22, and this came from the Weezer demo, Mrs Young btw. You can thumbs down all you want for posting Weezer bullshit on a Rentals video, but the fact is, with Matt, Weezer would have probably remained a better band than they are today. It was Matt and Rivers that made My Name is Jonas, Matt and Rivers that worked on a collaborative project while their bands were on hiatus, and it was as such that I think Matt and Rivers really worked well together.
I always wished I got more into these guys when they first came out with "Friends of P". They kind of remind me of Imperial Teen... And Maya Rudolph is pure f'ing awesomeness.
I have to find my copy of that CD now, I haven't really listened to it since 1999. I also need to find the girl from "the man with two brains", because I can tell from her voice that I want her to be the mother of my children :).

When River went to get his Harvard degree, after Pinkerton, my favorite, the long hiatus gave Matt time to see the band in this direction and Rivers saw it in another. So they parted ways, but still play together, if you are lucky enough to see them. Matt did write some of the best weezer songs, but Rivers and him collaborated to write some of the best rentals songs. It seems like the rentals are all about fun, & the "new" weezer is about making good music...that sells. Ever notice how there is a green,red,whatever color weezer album and then an album that is called maladroit, or named after a dog? One is for the record company and the other is for good music. They still play together and I think Matt wrote the sweater song and rivers wrote please let that be you. But not intended to be played with a Moog & a guitar. Anyway, I may be off a little, but the gist is there. They are all still cool with each other, but a reunion of the original weezer would kick so much ass, nobody could sit down for months. Please free free to correct anything I am trying to remember correctly. Unlike the trolls, I try to tell it like it is. Because music IS my life, ask "insert famous name here" so I can be cool. Like I or anyone cares. Just enjoy life. It seems like yesterday I was at the weezer show, with NERF HERDER opening for them in a 200 max club.

As much as I hate to admit it, you're half right. Whether Matt had stayed or not, if Pinkerton was successful when it came out, then Weezer would go on to make the same style of music. If Matt still stayed despite Pinkerton being a flop, there's no doubt in my mind the sound would still be grittier due to his bass sound. But the Pinkerton sound wouldn't have stayed regardless, as Rivers has written every Weezer song since, besides some stuff on the Red Album.
Rivers didn't release SFTBH because one of the head producers at Geffen told him it was crap and too ambitious for a sophomore album, and that Blast Off! was the only listenable song on it. There may have been other factors but that is the main reason I think...

Yea it was kind of a dick move for Sharp to take the sound from that album and start his own band with it. I can't wait until Weezer finally releases the album from what I've heard from it it seems like it could be better than anything they've ever made.
I guess stealing is a bad way of putting it. Basically as Weezer decided on a sound for their new album which at the time was Songs from the Black Hole. It was supposed to contain alot of synths and distortion alot. Matt Sharp started writing songs around this sound that the band was going for but then decided to start a side band around this sound and used some of the songs he was writing for weezer. That's why Rivers didn't release SFTBH because it sounded too much like the Rentals.
