Fun fact: in the episode "the one with the football" (ep 9, third season) Phoebe wears a "That Girl" t-shirt. The star of "That Girl" is Marlo Thomas, who plays Rachel's mom 😉
Her father, Danny Thomas , should be canonized a saint for starting St Jude's Hospital for cancer stricken children. Marlo , her sister, and brother have done a great job continuing what he started. God bless them !
Wonderful how she says how the cast was so nice to her. E.g. saying how David Schwimmer held the door open when she arrived on the set of Friends for the first time, like a true gentlemen, and Jennifer standing up for her in terms of supporting her creative input as the golden girl of comedy. She was a great addition as Rachel's mom. It's a shame we did *not* got to see her more often, including when Rachel gave birth in season 8. But of course it wouldn't fit whatever drama would eventually unfold between Rachel and Ross of course.
Her last comment is 100% true. It's comforting to visit those shows and particularly those characters again and again. Even after the actors pass away as is the case with 'The Golden Girls', their characters are eternal.
too bad she never mentioned another episode she was in - the one where Phoebe & Monica forgot to invite her to Rachel's baby shower. How she was being rude to Monica - it was a masterpiece of acting.
I was saving this interview to watch when I had time to savor it. I notice she has a mini version of the "That Girl" 'do as Sandra, Rachel's mom. Her being on "Friends" was like the passing of the "That Girl" baton. Her "Friends" character was daring, outspoken, and uninhibited, much like Ann Marie. It's good to hear that Ms. Thomas had a good experience on this show.
Marlo Thomas looks fantastic! It was perfect casting to make her Rachel's Mom! When Marlo was n 'That Girl!', her hairstyle was all the rage. Then years later, 'The Rachel' was the big deal! Like TV mother, like TV daughter!
Marlo is right. It was a great line, "At least I know I have options." Marlo in That Girl was a superb comic actress. And Ted Bessell was incredible with her. And Ann's father had incredible comic timing.
She observed the part very deeply, no wonder why she made such a wonderful portrayal of Rachel's Mom. The scene where she hangs out with the girls, it's funny but underneath it's rather sad just like she says. I remember when Rachel asks why on earth she would understand all those annoyingly weird things her Mom's doing, her Mom says "Because you didn't marry your Barry honey, but I married mine!" and that is so touching and sad!
I remember an episode where Rachel's mother, played by Marlo Thomas, walks in Rachel & Monica's apartment when a whole bunch of people were there and some random guy that opens the door says something to her, and Marlo says, "I'm not looking for just any girl," as she points at Rachel, "I'm looking for THAT GIRL!!!" A takeoff and reversal of Marlo's old show That Girl. But I forgot which episode it was. A guy that runs a Friends Twitter page says no such gag ever occurred. Yes, it did! I told him I'm not making it up! So I found the three episodes Marlo appeared in on rerun and watched all three, and sure enough, that gag is not there! Why? Was it edited out due to copyright concerns? Does anyone know? And what episode was it supposed to be in?
I suppose we should have empathy for Rachel's mom (even though she's unlikeable at times) as she was married to such a horrible man. Rachel's Dad was so spiteful and really cruel to people.
Oh my gosh, Marlo Thomas is not a “friends actress “. She starred in and produced a groundbreaking series in the 60s called “that girl “. It broke a lot of rules, as many as They could get away with in the network television of the time. And her “free to be you and me “special was way ahead of its time in expressing the right of everyone to be who they are without conforming to gender specific rules like blue is for boys and pink is for girls. Which by the way was a Macy’s invention to sell more clothing to parents. Prior to that babies were always dressed in white and you could hand down white two boys or girls. But I digress LOL. Marlo Thomas is a lot more than a friends actress. Much as I love Friends.
Marlo: I wanna have a break, I'll be out Directors: no, You got to do this first Jennifer Aniston: let her have a break; she's the queen of comedy! Me: Queen of comedy?! If Marlo is the Queen of Comedy, I would be the King of Comedy
So what if she’s had work done! She comes from era of Hollywood when they wanted every female star to look younger than they actually were and unfortunately this is still a thing. Marlo has always been an activist for women but she still has her insecurities like we all do but This doesn’t change the fact that she’s a kind person who is trying to make the world a better place and in the end that’s all that matters. Side note: I was surprised she was 29 when she started that girl but I could of swarm she was in her early 20s. I’ll be 29 next year and there’s no way I look like I did when I was in my early 20s.
While searching my computer for an old posting, I stumbled upon my very first blog post on ‘appearance journalism’ of some two years ago, after reading it I concluded, instead of things getting better they have gotten much worse. Almost every newscast I encounter, I have to fight my way past sets of greasy red clownish lips, mounds of streaking dyed hair shades not found in nature, and most of all, are those 80year old Larry King types in their youthful hair dyes, its only after the fighting is all over am I able to comprehend the news as it is trying to be reported…
I get yr reaction to the video, but honestly look up more about Marlo and how ground-breaking her life & her upbringing was, whether as an actor, producer, or activist for children & teens and their right to healthcare and expression. She’s more than just an actress on Friends - terrific woman :)
Well it seems that most of the comments indicate that the viewers don't mind. Me included. I say bring them on. They've recycled since we're still riding on the success of the recent release of the Friends Reunion so it's gonna show up on most people's algorithms.
"The one with two parties" was one of the funniest episodes ever. So well done!
It is one of the all-time best episodes...and the one with Bamboozle 😂😂😂
I agree its prob my fav
Definitely! One of the best ♥️
I couldn't agree more
Marlo mother is half sicilian (italian on father side) and half levantine.
"You didn't marry your Barry, I married mine"
That line still sticks with me
Why was the cast of Friends so perfect? Everyone involved was great and well fitted. My goodness… it couldn’t be any better!
Could it be any better? 😂😆
A lot of the guest stars in the later seasons said they felt uncomfortable on set because the main six were so close and made others feel left out.

I know. I love that!

You are so right about the Hospital. That Man was. a Champion of children.
That's right! I remember the commercials she did for St.Jude hospital She helped them a lot.🙂
Marlo mother is half sicilian (italian on father side) and half levantine.
What a beautiful and classy lady! And she was so cute back in the sixties ♡
Marlo mother is half sicilian (italian on father side) and half levantine.
Shes one of the best always liked Marlo Thomas - she’s great in everything she does.

She seems like the loveliest lady!
She is the cutest 😭♥️

I like when she said shows last forever because you like and care about the characters. You want to revisit them. I think that's true.
Aww! What a sweet lady! Love when she imitated Matt's voice while talking about him.
She literally aged unbelievably well
lol
righttt her face didnt seem right to me but turns out shes 82!!!
She WOULD have, had she not ruined her face with plastic surgery. Still, she is loved.
Aged well? LOL
@@tutyhasbi9032 It didn't seem right because she had a face lift. That's why she didn't look like 82.

I’ve loved her my whole life since That Girl, but I forgot just how funny and talented she was on Friends.
She does great things with St. Jude!!
Yeah I never made that connection before ... great hospital helping sick kiddos and their fams. Good for her.
Wow she was gorgeous and aged well too!
It's nice to know that I have options 😂😂😂 hilarious

Love Marlo!! 💘 So down to earth!
She’s still gorgeous 😍
She was also this show in the 1960s called “That girl”.
she's still THAT GIRL..and wow Marlo Thomas has aged remarkably well

"bridal shower for rachel" lmao

I have yet to watch her sitcom That Girl. Definitely on my list, just because.
I saw it. I was a kid. All I remember is her looking at mannequin with a wedding dress on. That wrinkled at her. Though a glass department store.
I'm watching it now on Tubi for the first time and it's pretty good.
@@lisaspohn7245 Yes great opening for her show. And That 😉
@@lisaspohn7245 It was Marlo not mannequin winking. But that was so clever
I guess Marlo didn't see, "TOW the Football", because Phoebe was wearing a "That Girl" T-shirt. I think she would have remembered that obvious homage.
How can you not love that girl (Marlo Thomas).
Sounds like Matt Leblanc was really intimidated to kiss Marlo
Matt leblanc is of spanish descent and his original surname is la blanca
RIP Dr Greene!
Just found out now that he passed in December :( Shame I didn't hear anything about it when it happened
Why isn’t she on TV more? 🥰🥰
I loved "That Girl" and never realized this was Marlo Thomas on Friends.
Joey kisses Rachel's Mother

Who doesn't love Marlo Thomas. That Girl😘
I loved seeing Marlo on Friends especially when she hated Monica and Monica almost kills herself trying to impress her 😂
Marlo is beautiful, I have the Barbie, Ann Marie That Girl doll.

She appesrrd 3 episodes
God she is beautiful

Is she wearing the same dress?
I found her repeated comments about the cast being "cute" to be quite condescending yet at the same time not unexpected, coming from an "old" lady.
aw, I think it comes across as endearing and yes, she is 82...

I didn't find it condescending at all. She was old enough to be their mother, so they were "cute" to her.
Did Marlo smoke?? Sounds like it

What is it with these celebrities and the plastic surgery??? If they just knew how bad it made them look.
You're looking old, Marlo. The new face
on top of the old face. Old is old, that's what I say.
