As someone whose cousin was scammed by a videographer for her wedding, I'm just glad I realized what was happening and I ended up using my cellphone to get all the video footage of that night. The videographer gave her 5 minutes of footage and I ended up giving her a full 3 hour video. This scamming is so hurtful to the people involved, but really solidifies that I will never pay anyone I don't trust to do things I find important.

My sister’s videographer ghosted her after the wedding and didn’t send her ANYTHING. She spent literal years sending him messages asking for updates, and at one point just gave up and asked him to at least tell her if he just lost the footage somehow. He never responded, and 10 years later she’s still upset about it. It’s something that can never be recreated, so he not only robbed her of her money, time, and energy, but also memories.

I’d be honest, as an artist, £1,200 is so cheap for a live art work, especially a portrait. But that quality is…. Yikes…
One of my artist friends was paid £5,000 for a portrait of a couple for their anniversary. Oil paint, took a month to complete, and she’s been a professional painter for 40ish years now. The finished piece was beautiful and well framed, to the point the couple gave her a tip of £500 on top.

“Pretty standard” is the problem. We are in an era where artists are confidently charging the full value of their worth, and everyone else is understanding you shouldn’t haggle. That’s great! Except people don’t understand that “what you’re worth” is based on the quality of your work. Everyone from cake decorators to painters think everyone is entitled to a “standard” even if they don’t meet that standard.

  • @flamevix

For anyone not understanding the pricing of thr art:
A live custom painting like that could run $500-$1500. Based on time and supplies. Travel, room and board may be a factor too.
Now the person's paintings shown in this video were not a very good example, but of the other many wedding painters I have seen, that price is entirely reasonable.
Artists deserve to be paid their worth. And most people who do hire them know the cost and will treasure the art. 6:42

I agree. They should have also asked to see the portfolio of the artist they’re hiring. • @Carrybean
      @Carrybean ปีที่แล้ว +140

Exactly. The wedding painting is as absolutely not professional by any means, it was terrible, but actual professional artists do need to be paid by industry standards.
Often times the price for a finished 2 dimensional one of a kind painting (not a reproduced print, original one of a kind piece) bought from a genuine professional artist, the universal industry standard is determined by height + length in centimeters and add one zero to the result.
So a painting that’s 150 cm by 60 cm, is in total 210 plus one zero so it’s $2100. This is the GLOBAL industry standard. Buying an actual fine art piece is vastly different than buying a print from the IKEA or whatever. It’s like buying a couture hand-sewn evening gown, you are paying for professional, high quality expertise and artistry, you are not buying mass manufactured basic clubbing dresses made by child labor in a 3rd world country.
The price goes up as you become more successful and sought after but that’s the starting point, if you are trying to be a genuine professional artist if you charge less than that, you are either saying you are so inexperienced and so naive that you don’t know the industry standards and in fact art is really a little hobby rather than a genuine passion for you. Or alternatively you are saying you don’t take yourself seriously as an artist, so you don’t price it seriously because you yourself deem it as not worthy of the industry standard prices, so potential buyers or other artists immediately know to not take you or your work seriously either.

1200$ sounds like a fair price as "live" painters actually paint during the whole wedding + art supply is pricy + if it's a job, you have taxes.
Those live paintings we see on social media, wouldn't be surprised if they payed more than 2 times that. It seems to be a very fancy service, just finding someone with the skills/will to do it on the spot and who has the time to is not easy. (a quick google search tells me entry price 1500$ up to 10k$).

It depends on the skill though, I know I could do it for that price because I'm good lol, (not being cocky it's true) but a lot of people charge a ton because it takes them a long time. WHICH ISN'T BAD, IT'S A SKILL THING and there's a sweet spot. But let's think about crochet as an example - a beginner crochetter might take 10 hours on something simple like a steering wheel cover while an experienced one can do it in 3-4 hours. The beginner isn't going to break even for their time unless they charge like $75-100 even though almost nobody is going to be willing to pay more than $30-40. It's not wrong it's just that they have to get good enough to crank work out. DOES IT KIND OF SUCK? yeah, and it can take the fun out of the art too. I can do a pretty decent pet portrait in about 1-2 hours and I charge about $80 (depending on size) because I'm good and because I'm fast that shakes out to $40 an hour. It took a long time to get here, and I could charge more but I'd get fewer people. So it's all a balancing act. I do not think that live painter was particularly great, I think it's not even a stylistic thing (I love abstract art) I just don't think they have great technique. But to each their own. I definitely think art is subjective, and I don't want to be a gate keeper of art, but I also don't believe in like "support small business yeehaw" if the small business isn't that great. Supply and demand baby.

Even if it was a joke, I was vehemently refusing that I could do so, because I don’t paint traditionally hardly at all, and could only imagine the stress having to live paint a wedding would be! I’ve never done something like that before! ONLY hire people who have the portfolio and background showing that they can and will do a good job! And be aware, art, especially custom made art, is EXPENSIVE! If you pay nothing, you’re probably gonna get nothing! God bless!

As an artist, I can tell you why the painting looks off. The medium (paint) doesn't match the cartoonish art style. If the piece was done in marker (markers are not less professional than paint), the painting would look less crummy and more put together. It seems like the professional saw that wedding paintings were trending online and tried to take an opportunity to participate in the trend, but they don't have enough experience with paint itself. It looks nice, but for many clients it would appear that you're not confident with using paints, and to professional painters, it looks like paint was not needed to make this art piece.

As an artist myself I see too often middle aged women who paint with acrylics who went to 1 or 2 art classes and now seem to think they are a professional. I don't know if it's delusion or if it's just overly positive thinking. Why acrylics? Because that's typically what they use in art classes, so that's how you can spot a newbie artist. People who have practiced art since they were kids are typically depressed and filled with self doubt. 45+ women beginner artists are immune to self doubt perhaps because they didn't grow up with all the shitty treatment artists always get.

    • @NoelleTakestheSky
      @NoelleTakestheSky ปีที่แล้ว +29

Acrylic isn’t an inherently bad medium, though there are certainly cheap-ass quality acrylics with very low pigment in them. I’ve seen stunning acrylic works by very talented artists, and I’ve seen shit work by newbies using the high-end stuff.
“People who have practiced art since they were kids are typically depressed and filled with self doubt.”
This is a shit mindset. A lot of people who start art as kids are creative types who use art as their outlet. Some creative types gravitate toward music, or another kind of art. Some kids are sporty and gravitate toward various sports. It’s supremely stupid to think that what makes kids do art is self-doubt and depression. If anything, doing art takes a measure of confidence since you have to be able to look at your own work and see what can make it better and be confident enough that you can.
Those 45+ women who seem to lack self-doubt are actually the ones with enough self-doubt that they can’t look critically at their own work to see where they can improve. They can’t handle it. So they don’t, and never improve.

The white balance in the videos was way off, but I think I can fix it in post-production myself without any issues, the important thing was that all the funny moments during the reception were captured on video. I've never been to a wedding to know much about them but as an unexperienced person 1.2k seems like a reasonable price. I mean there are humble weddings that don't cost 10k they get their videographers somewhere surely there's affordable services out there. Y'all are just excusing the terrible work and skill of people who charge high, just like the painter in this video. He's just like her.
If you're supposed to expect an even higher price tag just for a decent wedding film, then tell me how are lower income people supposed to afford a wedding? @@LovelyLittleLillies there’s a difference between “expensive” and “a lot of money”. 1200 is a lot of money, but to say if it’s cheap or expensive it depends on the product or service. 1200 for a phone is expensive. 1200 for a car is cheap. I said in my comment that there are definitely talented professionals who don’t charge as much, but it’s up to the client to do their research if they’re deciding to go with something less expensive. Had she taken the time to research his portfolio, she wouldn’t have had this problem. I worked as a professional makeup artist for many years and everything wedding related is automatically more expensive, it’s just how things go. I feel bad for her, but once you work providing service you learn that some stuff is worth investing more on. And if you can’t afford something more expensive (as many people can’t), it’s up to you to do your research and make sure you get the absolute best service that fits within your budget. And there were definitely better professionals to do this job for this price, I’m sure. She just didn’t care to look for them. She didn’t take this decision seriously enough, and she paid the price for it.

@@hellxcas i don't think everything wedding related should be automatically marked up and that it's normal. It's a shame people are accepting this culture or many just don't have other options. It's such a special moment in people's life and people are just looking to profit of it

That clip of the bad videographer filming the couple re-imitating a cute moment for the photos is very funny. Picture yourself attending a wedding and being told to stand somewhere for minutes with a sparkler while the bride and groom do a little 'candid' photoshoot

2:34 it's honestly not that bad. artists are often freelance or commission-based so they need to raise their prices. plus, they're working from life on a time crunch. if they're really good at what they do, it's worth it.

That art pricing is normal idk what you’re expecting. Furthermore, artists don’t have to go to traditional schools or have certification. All you need is a portfolio and someone willing to pay the prices you’re asking. Maybe that isn’t what people expect who aren’t a part of the industry or a client of the industry, but that’s just how it is. What’s more like, art schools can frequently be a scam more than an actual quality education.

That happened to me on my wedding. That day we hired 2 photographers, so one could be around my husband and one around me. I don't know why but the owner ended up being my photographer. And her photos were AWFUL
All were stupidly bright of super dark, and all shaky, I don't think she knows how to use or program her camera. No interesting angles, no creative pictures, nothing, we have people blinking, red eyes, everything just a bunch of useless garbage.
But my husband's photographer was super talented, every photo was like taken from a fantasy land, they are beautiful. We hired him outside the photo business to do a re-do of my side with my family. And those pictures are gorgeous, they are my favorites.
Now he is going solo, and good for him. His work does not deserve to be with that trashy business (I'm pretty sure they stole his portfolio for their business)

Well as an artist myself, just doing a simple drawing using pens and pencils, at least for me, can take hours drawing the base lines then inking it and coloring. Most of the time I’ll work on a picture over a span of a few days, when I’m putting in maximum effort.
Also anything rawly hand drawn is going to have it quirks if you don’t use a computer to photoshop it 😂

I literally just had my wife fly to California and we streamed it on Twitch. The pandemic is still happening even if everyone's pretending it isn't.
I'll be doing a proper renewal with ceremony when it's safe for my immune compromised dad to be there in Europe where I'm moving to and it'll be cheaper because North America has chaos demon levels of price.
ALSO STARTING A MARRIAGE OFF IN DEBT IS THE BEST WAY TO CONCLUDE IN AN ANNULMENT OR RAPID DIVORCE (and ruin your life). Don't do that. Be practical. It's an important day. Be reasonable and focus on what matters: the marriage. It's not about the party. It's about the couple starting together joyfully.

When i got married in 2014 my wedding cost £550 and most of that was food for a total of 30 people. Best thing to do with venues is call one day ask their pricing for your wedding, then a day later call again with the same details just don't mention its a wedding, you'll save yourself a great deal by never mentioning its a wedding event

....okay, but the live painting is literally a reasonable cost for a good quality painting, especially for LIVE painting. 1k is the average i've seen for it. that being said, her art isn't.... i hate putting worth on other people's art, but i. oh noooooooooo
actual live painting is rarely finished same-day. they block out the main area, then get the basic shapes and details before the event is over. then they complete it at home for a highly detailed piece.
