    I'm about to buy the Princeton right now because of this video thanks! I was on the fence about the Deluxe vs the Princeton. I think the Deluxe would be better for any live shows but I need it primarily for the studio and that thing sounds awesome with the stock speaker! Thanks for making this video :-)

    • @betterthangold9118
      @betterthangold9118 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve got both. The Princeton is killer for home playing but does not have the clean headroom to run a pedal board much passed volume at 6 with the amp really breaking up. Sometimes it good, sometimes you need more headroom/volume.

  • @davidgarza1301
    @davidgarza1301 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think the Deluxe sounds way better pushed with the 12” speaker. Love those Princeton cleans though applied to jazz tones.

    • @betterthangold9118
      @betterthangold9118 ปีที่แล้ว

      It absolutely does. I’ve got both and they’re great, but the Princeton just doesn’t have the headroom for volume or to run a pedal board through without the amp running out of ability to handle much of a venue.

    I own both. I use the Princeton about 4 times as often as I use the Deluxe. Obviously, if I was only buying one amp, the Princeton wins, hands down. The ratio would be true when compared to the frequency of use for my other amps, too.
    Overall, I use my Princeton 50% of the time. My other amps are 2012 VoxAC15c, 2008 Fender Blues Jr in blonde, 2015 Fender Vaporizer in Seafoam (for fun!), 1968 Univox - about 40 watts (bassman clone), - and the previously mentioned Deluxe and Princeton RIs.
    Small amps rock!

    Have always wanted a Deluxe Reverb, but think I may just have to get the Princeton. Already own a heavily modded Blues Deluxe Reissue that handles all my glassy clean gigging needs, and what I really need is a smaller amp that can be pushed to saturation in the home without going deaf. Thinking the Deluxe Reverb will feel too powerful for that.

    Thanks for the Demo. This is exactly what I was looking for. I used a 69 Fender Super Reverb for over 30 years. As I get older , it is too much to lug around and is more power than I need. So I got the RI Deluxe Reverb. Sounds great, not 69 Super Reverb great, but great enough. I need to lighten the load again and wanted to see if the Princeton at 28 lbs would better suit me in the "lug it around" dept. I think it will.

    I have a real authentic original 1965 Princeton reverb. When the cabinet rotted out, I built a head cabinet for it. I use two speaker cabinets normally, usually together.
    I use a 12-inch EV speaker in one and a 10 inch Eminence signature George Alessandro vintage voiced speaker in the other cabinet. I own 16 different guitars of all types.....and over 30 pedals....
    I HAVE NEVER NEEDED OR WANTED ANY OTHER AMP IN 45 YEARS.

  • @erikhartley2494

    The Deluxe seems to have a more mid focused and smoother tone, more akin to my Ceristone OTS mini (Dumble clone) amp, so I lean towards that tone. The Princeton sounds great but as the more traditional scooped blackface tone. Both great but different.

  • @zeroboyrick1717
    @zeroboyrick1717 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To me the Princeton has a clarity the deluxe doesn't have. It just has a better overall sound quality, seems more expressive and sensitive to picking force. I've owned both these amps, currently a tweed Princeton with the Cannabis Rex 12" speaker. I think either one is as good as it gets for true tone and also reverb. If the Princeton is a Class A amp it's news to me. It's my understanding A-B amps cancel out even harmonics and could explain the difference if true?

  • @rebelcat420
    @rebelcat420 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No, the Princeton is not “class a”
    The brightness you notice with the deluxe is due to the bright cap on the volume knob.
    The flubby low end on the Princeton is not due to the 10” speaker (10” speakers are by nature TIGHTER), the flubby low end is due to the phase inverter design difference in the amps

    Since when is the Princeton Class A ? It is exactly the same circuits as the Deluxe reverb.
    The only differences are. A bright cap on the bright Channel of the DR , Tremelo with photocell on the DR, the Speaker and the Power transformer. There where de Princeton has no bright cap, and the tremelo on the power tubes. Both are class AB Sir, except if somebody has modded it.
    The Princeton can play even loud or louder then the DR when it should have the same speaker. It also has only 4 pre-amp tubes there where the Deluxe has 6. I have 3 Princeton, and at 3 on the volume pot it plays already loud.

    Thanks for vid. I"m trying to decide whether to go Princeton, or Deluxe at the moment, so this is really helping me to clear up my thoughts.
    My head says the Princeton is the most sensible option because I'm mainly playing at home for my own pleasure. But when I've demoed them in the shop the Deluxe has the sound and response I want, i think the low end is where the big difference is. Even though the Deluxe is 22w and I read lots of comments about it's 'wall shaking' volume, it doesn't sound as loud to me as my Wem Dominator did (15w), and I used to get away with cranking that thing on Weekends in my flat, without complaints ;)
    It was also really useful to hear the Princeton through a 12inch speaker. I've heard some other demo's of Princeton's that come with a 12inch speaker (stock) and they sound better to me than the 10inch, it got me all confused ;P. But hearing them side by side is helpful.
    I think it's going to have to be Deluxe, the saggy low end response of the Princeton just isn't what i'm looking for.
    Tasty playing as well my friend ;)

      Toby thank you! Glad you enjoyed my video. Both amps are amazing amps! Both have their perks and downsides. I have to say, my rig right now is my Princeton going into an Eminence EM12. A lot of the princeton sag is due to that 10in speaker it comes with (low power handling) the EM12 handles something crazy like 250 watts. Very clean sound! You can hear my princeton on my most recent posts

    very thorough reviews. good job. having owned both (i still have the prri 65), the tone stack was definitely more mid-focused on the drri. thanks for pointing out the differences in the tremolo circuits. it's quite glorious on the drri, but seriously lacks on the prri.
    all things considered, i chose to keep the princeton. i don't gig much. i mainly just home record. the pr was always a favorite for recording, and the ri still delivers in that department.
    good job, buddy!

    • @cameronstolhand7149
      @cameronstolhand7149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The tone Stacks are identical according to the schematics. The majority of the tonal differences are from the speaker. The other differences in tone probably are because the deluxe has more gain stages. Other than that the circuits are pretty similar they even use the same Transformers. The deluxe has a choke but I wouldn't think that would make a difference in the tone. The reason the vibrato sounds different is because the vibrato circuits are different. The deluxe uses a Optoisolator in the vibrato circuit.

    Holy moly... that's all I got to say. I' be curious to see how the Deluxe compares to the new '64 handwired Deluxe. Have you had a chance to test it or compare the 2? Fantastic comparison video man!

    Great demo - many thanks! Really good to hear them with the Celestion Creamback - think the stock speaker sounds better in both instances. The Creamback better suited to British voiced gear, imho.

    Can you tell me - How high do you have to set the DRRI to sound comparably loud as the PRRI at volume setting 4-5? The PRRI at 4-5 sounds great, and as far as I remember, the DRRI needs to be at at least 3 to sound good.
    Here in Norway, I've never had the chance to try them both at the same time. English is my second language, hope my question is clear enough. Keep up the good work! :)

    I had a Drri with the bright cap mod, and a Cannibas Rex Speaker, and I have a Prri. I kept the Prri., and modded it with a 12 in. Speaker and a Heyboer OT.

    Very nice Demo! I want one of those amps but couldn't decide which one. I was leaning toward the Deluxe but it would be primarily for home use so I think I would benefit more from the Princeton. They both sound great but the Deluxe would just get to loud. I want to get some good overdrive without the neighbors calling the cops. I have an 97 fender american standard strat and a boss blues driver pedal that I think would be a nice fit. Maybe I should look into a tube screamer. Thoughts?

    I heard that the original 1968 Princeton reverb amp that has the silver face but it is still a black face circuitry is the best of the Princeton Reverb amps. Is that so? The drip edge

    It seems that the speaker and cabinet size really has an impact on the sound of these two amps. You can still har the difference when put through the same cabinet, but the sound is much closer.
