Mines was wobbling it’s been liketst for months I bought it used from a crashed 2002 corvette on my new build I didn’t know the damage it would have done to my new motor I cried
Hey C&S Corvette! My C6 Ls3 2009 HB wobbles a little bit when idle. When I give it like a 1.000 rpm or even less, you cant see the wobble anymore. I have a corvette garage here and they told me as long as it doesnt wobble when running at 1.000rpm, i dont need to replace it. Is that true? Thanks for all the Information you gave in your videos. I was watching them all before I got my corvette in march 2022😊 Many greetings from overseas (germany)
Guten Tag, BT! The wobble you describe is typical of the OEM balancer due to manufacturing variances. Best way to keep tabs on it is to use a paint pen and put a line from the outer edge down to and including the edge of the center hub. Use WHITE, as it is easiest to see. If that line breaks after a few hundred miles you'll know it is time to change it. Lyle :)
Harmonic balancer is going in my 97 vette . I want a good product replaced , which would be be a better recommendation, a good aftermarket harmonic balancer or a good quality damper ?
Any quality brand balancer will do, but we recommend you buy the kit that allows you to pin it to the crankshaft to prevent rotation of the balancer. If you are doing track time or hard performance driving, we recommend the summit racing balancer for $199 that will never come apart. Hope this helps! Lyle
Lyle Aulwurm hey Lyle , it’s Lyle lol thanks for your response. I was looking at the ATI dampers but I don’t see one for $199 they are all mid $400’s and up was looking on the summit racing site , is there another site where the prices are around what you mentioned. The only one I saw was a hub for $140 USD . Up here in Canada still have 3 months before I can get the car out. Thanks Lyle
I am working on my C5 harmonic balancer replacement and the rack and pinion steering is stuck on the passenger side, hung up in the passenger bolt bracket. I AM BEYOND FRUSTRATED. I removed the lines it is free on the drivers side, it's stuck where the bolt goes between the two brackets. I try wiggling it doesn't budge. The drivers side goes up and down but won't move. I have loosened the 4 large carriage bolts to the bottom couple of threads and this thing will not budge. I took a 7 foot cold rolled weight bar to try and pry it and it won't come up, the bar is flexing a couple inches and i an afraid i an going to break the carriage frame which i am prying off of. Any suggestions?
Cary, you have approached this the same way we would have. Every step you have done is correct and in the right order. It sounds like someone previous to you tightened the bolt through the rack to the point that the bracket bent inward and locked the rack into place. I do not have any good advice--this will involve equal amounts of patience and swearing to solve. Lyle
Hey guys after my HB was replaced I noticed a high pitch squeal from the belt area can’t diagnose exactly where. Any ideas? I replaced the HB, the main belt tensioner, and front crank seal
@@vicf8919 Then I would look carefully at the A/C belt tensioner---they lean away from the block with age and cause the belt to run misaligned and make noise.
@@razigirl1425 both are good units--almost identical in every way. The summit part availability can be spotty, but the PB unit is always in stock, it seems. Either will work perfectly and be trouble free. :) Lyle
Any LS engine can have this problem. The scarier part of the LS7 is the valve dropping into the cylinder because of faulty manufacturing at the factory. Google LS7 valve drop.
Ok, let me know if this is totally crazy but I was thinking to maybe prevent this or to at least slow the failure to place 4 equal weight small bonds of JB weld around the harmonic blancer every 90 deg (or three every 120 deg) to help hold the inner and outer rings together. Sure, it is a hack method but if I do not alter the balance could it do harm?
@Stew Ramone I agree that this is a very good balancer. If the car owner wants to save money or stay stock, the PowerBond PB1117N from Summit is also a solid (and much more affordable) option. Lyle
@@righteouslife1197 , these balancers are "wear items" and will fail over time (5-10 years). If you want to solve the problem once and for all, you can spend a larger chunk of cash on a solid dampener from Summit Racing for around $200 to $400 that will, in theory, never wear out. Great video! The only critique I have is the video quality. You should be able to produce 1080p video quality... most newer phones have 1080p as the default. :)
Hey Mike! We have upgraded to an HD camera recently, but when we posted this video we were still doing Facebook Live and then sharing to youtube...evidently, those two entities do not play well together and shared videos lose a lot of quality. We now post to each individually. Thanks for watching! Lyle.
I'm in England with a recently acquired C6. Your videos clearly explain what to look out for and how to fix them. Great stuff.
Thank you for these tips, I hope you continue video's on common c5 problems.
Hey buddy, great vid. You really helped me understand what happened to my vette. The crank pulley is not like up with the other pulleys.
Yep...time to address that issue right away, before it walks forward off of the center ring or (worse) backward into your timing cover. Lyle
These videos are life savers!!
Excellent information, thanks a bunch!
Thanks for your info, recently talked to you about C5 codes appreciate help. What's a fair cost for replacing balancer?

I'd ONLY do THAT if I was stuck in the middle of absolutely nowhere.. I did a similar repair and it lasted 50 miles

How much do you charge on average for this job
On a C5, installing new balancer and pinning it to the crank, new belts, tensioners and pulleys with the associated labor is roughly $1400.
@@csvette Considering the labor involved in this job that is pretty fair
