Well-written, but they made a major factual error: they claimed Gwen Verdon was divorced from Fosse, when they never divorced. They separated but were still legally married when he died.
He trained me from a very young age. He always said kid hurry up and turn 18 so you can work in one of my plays. I got the best happy birthday call a few day's after saying you ready Kiddo? Happy Birthday he died 20 minutes after I got the birthday call I waited for gone. Proud I at least got the gift of his technique from Bob. Bob didn't teach anyone. I just got lucky. I miss you dearly you tought me so much even yelling teaching me if I ever find out you did anything dumb. He was just bob to this little girl. Kiss Adler for me. She was the best Agent.
He admitted that he asked to go to dance school to be close to his crush, then to meet lots and lots of beautiful women. He also developed his early athletic style because, as a kid, he thought that ballet was too effeminate.
@@RedactedFreePress - That is such a tired cliché & stereotype. There are a lot of straight male dancers. In fact, I'd wager there's more straight male dancers today as opposed to 30yrs ago when Fosse died. Broadway has come a long way in the last few decades and there's a lot more to musical theatre now than shows like The Sound of Music and Hello Dolly. Broadway has become more hip, exciting and "cool" thanks to shows like Spring Awakening, RENT, American Idiot and Hamilton, just to name a few. The Great White Way has come a long way from Rodgers & Hammerstein and so too has the diversity of the performers.
it's very interesting that not a single one of these clips mentions Pippin, there isn't a single clip or photo of it, and even though there are several interview clips with Ben Vereen and even John Rubinstein, there's no mention or view of Pippin.
Judging by his example, adversity also makes us insecure, always hungry for more admiration, attention and adulation, however superficial and fleeting, and it leads to the inability to sustain a long-term monogamous relationship in which the partner is not just an object to be used and dumped whenever one feels like it.
She didn't, they were separated for a long time though, he really lived his life his way, fast and complicated but he was extremely talented and I'm so glad his style of dance lives on 😁
@@deaner1955 Yep. Exactly right- they never divorced. All things considered, it’s not surprising that she alone was by his side, holding his hand as he passed away. She must have been such a strong woman. She was integral to Fosse’s success- as they say, behind every successful man, is a strong woman. RIP to them both. 💔
These top news agencies got so much information wrong. He was with his third wife who did not divorce him when he died. One report says it was the opening night while another says it was the shows final rehearsal. If it was the opening, he was the kind of man who would have been there. They reported that he recently suffered a heart attack, it was something like fourteen years earlier that he suffered that heart attack. His style was perfection and he brought a new sexuality to dancing that caught Michael Jackson's admiration who reportedly wanted Fosse to direct Thriller. The idea of the gloves and socks was Fosse's, Micheal used it with his flare. Michael idolized Fosse and became the next in a line of dancers created by Fosse's influence. He was a great man, talented and driven and gone to soon.
Jackson was far more of a creation of James Brown, John Bubbles and Fred Astaire... Fosse used jazz dance moves that existed decades before his career began, so to say the likes of Jackson were created by Fosse's influence is just absurd.
@@ExposeDrift Was referring to the wardrobe (socks, glove, highwater pants) rather than the jazz moves-but highly likely those were also taken from the jazz dancers from the 20's and 30's.
Great artist and friend but an evil terrible father husband, partner, boyfriend. It’s a shame he did not get help when young he might have been even more impressive in his private life. Which apparently was a fucking hot mess.
When there was respect for an artist, and art was meaningful. I do have hope for a Renaissance
Talent that you just never see anymore. Thank him for so many years of such wonderful art.
🎩🕺🏾
That’s BS. You see that kind of talent everyday. Just go to a dance-heavy Broadway show and you’ll see it.
Fossie lived an amazing life and left so much joy..come on how many people can say that. ❤️♥️😇
My favorite all time director. A true master.
BEAUTIFUL! Saw DANCIN 7 times, Fosse 12 times, that is how much I love FOSSE style!
A true pioneer and innovative dance genius. Thanks for inspiring two of my favorite recording artists, Michael Jackson & Beyonce!
What a great dancer, director and choreographer.
One of the most underrated film directors, a true pop culture icon with an influence that'll be felt by people that will never even hear of the man.
One of my favourite directors of all time.
With all the awards he won I don't think he was underrated at all. He was appreciated in his lifetime.
Aaron Taylor I don't think he's underrated at all. He remains as influential today as he was 40 years ago.
The true pioneers are always underrated or unknown. It's just how it is...
Err. He barely directed... his career revolved around choreography.
The opening clip is so well-written. Hard to believe he was only 60 when he passed. Far too young.
Well-written, but they made a major factual error: they claimed Gwen Verdon was divorced from Fosse, when they never divorced. They separated but were still legally married when he died.
All That Jazz had it all, and said it all.
Let's not forget about the made for television concert "Liza with a Z."
I miss him dearly he was in my life from 8 years old and I was so lucky to have his train me , he trained no one :(
He knew how he would die. He predicted it so clearly in “All That Jazz”. We, who saw it, knew…
I love how all the different channels use different clips, and give them a few seconds, rather than the same frantic jump cuts on every news show.
A Icon never before and never again

[sigh] When dance was dance ...and news was news.
John Rubinstein's comments made me tear up.
Gwen never divorced Bob. They were still married when he passed. They didn’t live together anymore, but they never divorced.

For the sweet love of God, Fosse was a *straight* Broadway dancer/actor/director/choreographer? lol!
I love it!
True fact
He admitted that he asked to go to dance school to be close to his crush, then to meet lots and lots of beautiful women. He also developed his early athletic style because, as a kid, he thought that ballet was too effeminate.
unheard of today!!
So was Gene Kelly!

He and Gwen never divorced.
He and Gwen never divorced
Although Gwen Verdon and Bob Fosse separated in 1971, they remained married until his death in 1987.
His art imitated his life
I think he is proof that adversity in life is often that je ne se qua, that makes us persevere, ponder and strive for greatness
indeed. he took elements from so many styles of dance and blended them for MJ to steal. XD
Judging by his example, adversity also makes us insecure, always hungry for more admiration, attention and adulation, however superficial and fleeting, and it leads to the inability to sustain a long-term monogamous relationship in which the partner is not just an object to be used and dumped whenever one feels like it.
@@RedactedFreePress Nope, Fosse stole from decades of Jazz dance moves that existed well before he showed it to the white mainstream.
indeed.
They never divorced! They lived apart but remained friends and dancers. She was with him when he died.

I came to say the same thing. Gwen Verdon was Fosse's wife til the day he died.
I am auditioning for the role of Amos Hart in Chicago in a few days, so I am on a Bob Fosse kick.
I was Amos Hart in a production years ago

I always assumed the white socks were from Gene Kelly. I attributed the glove and the high water pants to Fosse, though (Steam Heat).

The dance isn't sensual: thrusting and marching. I kind of hate it.
