John A big thank you for remembering three of my closest friends of VAQ 130 Det 4 LCDR. Charles L. Parker (PILOT) LTJG Keith A Christophersen (Nav &ECM Officer) and AT-2 Richard D. Wiehr (Aircrewman) I wrote what happen on that tragic night in the comment section of your video of flight deck operations on the USS Ranger CVA61 in late 1972. Hard to believe it has been 50 yrs ago I remember that night as if it was yesterday.

I did two west pacs aboard Ranger, 76 and 79, while attached to the black knights not too long before they transitioned out of the F4J. Great ship, great squadron, great pics. Thanks for the upload. Brought back allot of great memories.

Thank you, John: I was aboard ship with you in 72-73, and then again in 74. I was with VA-25 as an AT3, working as a pre-flight trouble shooter and in AIMD. It was quite a ride, wasn't it? I took quite a few slide photos, myself, but they managed to escape my grasp over time. So thank you, again, John! Good Job!!

Hey great job. It was hard getting good photos on that cruise - we were fighting a war. I was an ADJ with VF-21. !st cruise plane Captain (brown shirt) 2nd cruise, flight deck trouble shooter engines (white shirt) 1972, 73 & 74. I am inspired now to have the slides I have converted. The Soviet Bear Bombers made several passes on us. We always had F-4's on their asses ;-)

I was in VF-154. AQF 3 radar tech on the F4-J. Two cruises 67-68, 68-69. I remember a fire in the parachute riggers area. Got it under control without to much damage. Also the Ranger went up to the Sea of Japan when the USS Pueblo was taken in January 1969. Steamed around for 1 month, did nothing. The president let 82 sailors from the Pueblo sit there for 11 months. It was cold our sleeping compartments were 42 degrees.

We must have met. After steering was my favorite watch station. The A/C was always working down there and nobody would bother you. I would take other people's watches there and sometimes it was my GQ and Special Sea and Anchor stations. Got the best sleep ever behind the switchboards.

The A-7 in the foreground, number 410, was my friend's plane. He was responsible for moving it and sometimes loading it. He was named Plane Captain of the Month during his second cruise aboard the Ranger with VA-25 ('72-'73).

I went there in 65 and 66. Wish someone had video of the huge fire they had. I almost go a metal for digging into it but that Captain told the Admiral (Backburn?) i was to young at 17. He was such a ass but his replacement was the best ever. Memory won't let me be to informative. Was that fire about april 65?

Hello John - I’m curious to know when you served on the Ranger ? I had a cousin who also served on this ship. He was killed in a training mishap in the Red Sea in August of 1974.

Marc, I was out on the flag deck watching the air show and saw the whole event. I said to my BN next me to me that the flares the A-7 's shot were burning out and I hoped that they (F-4's) would not shot the Sidewinders at them; then I saw the two coming aft of the boat and the one went right into the engine of the helo. Sad day on Ranger boat that day!

I was on deck when the HC-1 was shot down. My good friend, Danny Porter, was aircrew on that chopper. I was in the air with Danny just one week prior to that tragic event. I think about Danny and his entire crew every day!!
