- In the good old days, despite Liverpool winning everything, every now and then Coventry would stuff them.
Terry Gibson's hat-trick in the 4-0 rout in 1983, Ndlovu's hat-trick at Anfield in 1995, Huckerby running the show in the 3-1 FA Cup win in 1998.
On 19th December 1992, Souness' Liverpool came to Highfield Road to play a Coventry team that hadn't won for 3 months.
90 minutes later and Coventry had their biggest ever victory over Liverpool.
Borrows scored from a penalty just before half-time and made it 2 early in the second half.
Gallacher broke away to make it 3, before a young Jamie Redknapp scored a free-kick and then got sent off.
With 10-men, Liverpool were a shambles and a brace from the Scouse Mick Quinn (who rather enjoyed his goals) made it 5-1. It could have been more.
Enjoy the highlights (of probably the most coverage Coventry ever received on MOTD...), then watch the goals from the win over Villa a week later.. • [92-93] Coventry City ...
Great to see Liverpool routed. JFT39.
Footie in early 90’s was top quality. Last few seasons of old league 1 and first few of Premiere were so skillful and pacey. Teams just kept going forwards. Cov were wonderful that night. If they didn’t have a net, that shot by Borrows would still be circling the earth. PUSB. Come on Robins, shows these viddies before games to team now, show the rich history of the mighty Sky Blues. LAST!
I'm a Liverpool fan from Coventry. What at this game as a 6 year old sitting in the family stand above West terrice. Cried my eyes out at full time and my old man will never let me live it Down 😂
i live in austalia now, have done since 2003... but i was at this game. will never forget it.
I remember that game like it was yesterday probably the best week in Coventry's history other than the cup of course
There is another Coventry game a decade earlier where Coventry win 4-0 vs Liverpool. That is on TH-cam. It is rare the same side does that by this type of goal margin vs Liverpool.
Quite the game for young Redknapp.
Great game remember it so well I was a steward their at the time good old Micky Quinn thanks for the memories jx 😀😀😀
Whos here after dons story on espnfc
Yes, & that's Steve Nicol in the Carlsberg Adidas jacket walking alongside Jamie Redknapp when he's sent off at 4:10 (Steve said someone sent him that picture the other day)
Great way to beat the victims. Pusb.
Good old days for Cov....... Can't believe how far we've fallen.
How time flys, 20 years. I was there that day in the Main Stand. What was even better, a Liverpool supporter was sitting next to me! And to top it all, we go and beat Villa 3 Nil next home game on Boxing Day.
Great days, mate. Great days.
Mick Quinn was a coventry legend! So sad to see how far we have slipped as a club..liquidation is a real possibility and we are now playing in Northampton. Football stopped being about football a long time ago.
Other clubs are heading down the path we are now. R.I.P sky blues, 130 years of history down the drain. Football league should hang their heads in shame.
ahh i was there that day, it was the game b4 christmas, and then a few days later we beat villa 3-0 on boxing day...yes!!!
I’m a die hard red from cov was 13 at the time and was playing footy in the spencer park the day of the game I could hear the crowd from the wind and thought that’s abit loud for cov…made sense when I got home and tuned into final score…got crucified that week at school aswell 😂
Was at this, day before my 12 th bday. Lfc fan but a Coventry lad so i couldnt lose that day. Was horrible seeing lfc get abused like that though.
Great game, team was awesome. PUSB.
Tells you everything you want to know about the Souness years
I was there!! Omg its been 20 years!! City will get bk to the prem one day!! When only god knows
It`s mad watching this footage again, can remember it well. Liverpool were almost bullit proof for so long. Though they have won trophy`s since their last league. They are not the Liverpool of old. Some changes ruin a good thing, Man Utd fans may have this to come you never know.
A Spurs fan.
I like this comment.
You were spot on
And as if to rub salt into the wound, four of Coventry's goals were scored by Scousers!
Why a free kick inside the box for a handball?
I didnt understand that either
It wasn't handball. The referee is signaling that it was a high boot from Wright.
As Quinn said of himself, I'm the quickest striker in the league, over the first yard.
how was there a free kick in the box?
I was wondering that. Must have been for obstruction.
@@manfredwilliams9762 It was for a raised foot (ref signalled by raising an open palm a number of times) and should have been taken outside the area as Quinny was stood a yard outside when he got the boot to the face. How the ref let it be taken in the box is for a time before 4th officials and VAR :) Let's just assume the Ref was overwhelmed by Cov's amazing display that day and that the freekick was played backwards out of the box for Bugsy to strike ;)
haha brilliant stuff
Can someone please genuinely help me out , Covs 2nd goal, great free kick, but surely being inside box, was pen
As stated above - The free kick wasn't given for handball but an alleged high foot (didn't look that high to me)
So that would come under the rules concerning either 'dangerous play' or 'obstruction', which back then resulted in an indirect free kick - even inside the penalty area.
