What does it say about my brain when it completely missed the fact that 13x10 is 130, but then on the second one went "87x8=696, 12x3=36, 36-8 = 28, 28+ 696= 724"?
If it's any consolation I totally missed that. Did a few "huh... 12x10... where do I find another 10 from?" attempts then settled on 62*10 = 620, 620/5 = 124, 7-1 = 6, 124 + 6 = 130
37 is a special number, well known by numberphiles, because 3*37 = 111. This means, any multiple of 3 (smaller than 30) multiplied by 37 is super easy to compute. 18*37 = 6*3*37 = 6*111 = 666. And 17 being = 18 - 1, we have 17*37 = 666 - 37 = 666 - 36 -1 = 629 Easy peazy.
I got the first one almost right away, but I did it by dividing the 10 by the 5 to get 2, then multiplying that by 62 to get 124, then adding the 7 to 131, and then subtracting the 1 to get 130. I was so pleased with myself for spotting the solution so quickly, and then I felt ridiculous when the contestants explained their much simpler and more obvious solution. Then I more or less did it again with the second one: I multiplied 87 by 8 to get 696, then I multiplied the other 8 by the 3 to get 24, then I added the 24 to the 4 to get 28, then that to the 696 to get 724. I felt pretty silly again when the simpler solution was revealed. But then I felt really good when I got the third one, admittedly right at the buzzer, and neither contestant got it: I added 37 to 6 to get 43 and 10 to 5 to get 15, then multiplied 43 times 15 to 645, then just added the 4 to that to get 649. Of course, I never would have gotten balalaika if I had had thirty days to work on it.
My answers were a bit more complex lol. Couldn't even comprehend how easy the solutions in the video were. For first one, 62-12=50, 50*4=200, 7*10=70, 200-70=130 For second one, 87*8=696, 12*3=36, 36-8=28, 696+28= 724 For third one, (37−(6*4))=13, 13*(5*10)=650-1=649
@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Dont try to hit a round number near the target then make up the difference... e.g. for 649 most people will try to get 640 or 650 first then add 9 or take 1. Instead you should use your biggest number to get as close to it as possible then make up the difference.
She has a math degree, so she obviously has a number talent. Not trying to sound too cocky, but I have a math degree myself and I get the answer in like 5 seconds. The 3 x 6 x 37 =666 is something that just takes a second for you if you deal with numbers every day. It just comes naturally, just like typing e.g., you just do it without even thinking about it. For a mathematician, writing it down takes longer than actually doing the math.
I actually managed to get all of these for once! First one I did 7x10 +12x5. Then for the second, I did 87x8 for 696, add 8x3 for 720, + 4. Then for the last, 37 x (10 + 6 + 1), + (4x5). Though I admit I didn't stick to the timer, I paused the video while I worked it out. :3
I don't know how this game works but for the first one I got 62 + (5 x 10) + 12 + 7 - 1 = 130. I was able to do it before the time even ended. Edit: For the second one I got (87 x 8) + (3 x 8) + 4 = 724. Edit 2: For the third one I got (37 x (10 + 1 + 6)) + (4 x 5).
87*8=696
12*3=36
696+36-8=724
I wish i found the simpler way, but that is just how my mind worked it out
same
same
I did it like
87+4=91
91*8=728
12÷3=4
728-4=724
I did 87+8=95
95*8=760
12*3=36
760-36=724
My answers were a bit more complex lol. Couldn't even comprehend how easy the solutions in the video were.
For first one, 62-12=50, 50*4=200, 7*10=70, 200-70=130
For second one, 87*8=696, 12*3=36, 36-8=28, 696+28= 724
For third one, (37−(6*4))=13, 13*(5*10)=650-1=649
Glad you brought these back fun to watch Rachel fun to look at also
Holy shit, I actually got the last numbers one!
3:22 I got it in about 23 seconds, but I was surprised by this because what I'd done was
87x8=696
696+4=700
700+(3x8)=724
I took a slight shortcut by getting to 28 with (12x3)-8
Two years late, but I got it an even more roundabout way
87x8 = 696
12+3 = 15
8/4=2
696 + (15 x 2) = 724
Guy : **drinks water during countdown and wastes his time like a sneaky thing**
With the first one, I did:
5×10=50, 50+62+12=124, 124+7=131, 131-1=130.
How characteristically convoluted of me.
You can't help but dance to the end of the countdown clock tune
Damn, that guy is thirsty as hell! He's chugging water every time there's a close-up!!
On the green ghost E’s 🤣
Is it easiest to 130, or most numbers used?
I did (5*10) + 62 + 12 + 7 - 1
+Morten Larsen Neither. The closer to the target you are, the more points you get, but how many numbers you use has no effect on your score.
LastStar007 Thanks ;)
Or: ((62*10) / 5) + 7 - 1
(12×5)+(7×10) did it for me
I did (7-5)×62+7-1
Does it freak anyone else out how good Rachel is at these maths problems like how on earth does she do it 😫❤️
Years and years of practice, that's how. Memorized a bunch of results by heart
I guess there must be certain hacks.
Getting that conundrum in 1 second surprised me more
Can’t believe this was posted 8 years ago.....
5:29 that guy fell in love
6 x 4 = 24
37 - 24 = 13
13 x 5 = 65
65 x 10 = 650
650 - 1 = 649
Matt Bateman 37-10= 27
27x4= 108
108x6= 648 + 1=649
1+1 = 2
geetarwanabe There is a book that proves this. Check it out

How.did u get that bet u used a calculater
Well, I came up with a different solution for the second one, though it took me about 45 seconds:
8x87 = 696, 3x8+4 = 28, 696+28 = 724
I went the hard way the first one: 5x12=60 +62=122 +7=129 +1=130
The colour of that blonde guy’s hair is gorgeous!
For 4:15 you could do [ (37 - 6 x 4) x 5 x 10 - 1 ]
That's what I did as well
And there was me celebrating when I got fifty away...
I did the numbers the long way round, (12*5)+(10*7)
Oh, man. They should do this more often!
That looked like a very good episode.
(37-10=27) (27x6x4=648) (648+1=649)
Kevin K 37-(6*4)=13 (13*5*10)-1=649
2:02. Am I the only one who did 62+5*10-1+12+7, and didn't even think of 13*10 lul
I feel like a toddler after watching this...
Edit 3: I paused each time and gave myself the 30 seconds it looks like they had. The woman actually did my exact way for the third one.
37+6 = 43
10+5 = 15
therefore 43 x 15 = 645
645 +4 = 649

Rachel Riley would be my dream wife. She is so charming and she could do my accounting!
Damn right
As soon as you hit 50 she'd divide you by 2
Watched the Conundrum twice, he beat me both times
The lady who puts on the cards is actually the real mvp.
Is it bad that I didn’t get the first one? 😂
I did 12x10 and didn’t know what to do from there 🤦♀️
Really😂

5:30 admiration or love for Rachel. We will never know
Why? Calculations ? Admire the hottie ;)
Awfully degrading and sexist. FUCK off.
Smol Sheep shut the fuck up feminist dog
For the tough maths one at the end, an alternative to Rachel's method is:
37+6 = 43
10+5 =15
43×15 = 645
645 + 4 = 649
I remember seeing this ages ago
How about use them all... 62+12 + (10*5) + 7 -1 =130
that's what i was thinking, shouldn't they use them all? i thought that was the point of this segment
Srdjan Aleksic How come I got the same answer as you and I'm 14, yet they couldn't use all the numbers
luke pilsbury because you don't always need all the numbers
Jimmy before the Botox is just not as funny.
those numbers werent actually that hard. only simple multiplications of the big numbers with added smaller numbers. I have seen much harder problems with the 25,50,75,100.
All it took is to quickly multiply the big one to get close and add/subtract the remainder.
Rachel is a great mathematician and does this stuff a lot. she also has much more than 30 seconds to figure it out.
The conundrum was actually comparably easy, if you know the word "balalaika"
I agree. It was one of the easiest conundrums I've seen because there wasn't any other word it could be.
I assumed he just knew a word with 2 Ls and 4 As. Plus, I believe you can buzz in more than once, so you would buzz before you were 100% sure.
@@ZipplyZane you can only buzz in once
1:40. (10-12) x 62 + (1-7). =130.... i failed maths and this is the first ever number challenge i've either managed to do in the time.
