Countdown - 'Scary' Numbers and Conundrum - Monday 16 August 2010

- For a couple of special editions of Countdown, the 'big' numbers cards were changed from the usual 25, 50, 75 and 100 to make things a bit more difficult for two returning champions.
Included here are all three 'scary' numbers games and the final conundrum. - บันเทิง
The obligatory "taking a sip of water so everybody knows how quickly I got it".

I always try to find a different way. Yeah it pretty smug to recline while the other guy sweats, but it''s even more smug to say "which solution shall I go for?".
Yeah that dude was a tool and you could tell Rachel didn’t like him.
@@alexjones7043 Fucking lol, alright "Alex Jones". It's a game show, a bit of fun where the literal entire point is to show off how smart you are. They're no match for you though, you can tell what Rachel was thinking and feeling. You'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.

Watson C. It’s been documented in the past that a lot of number games especially these ones with the difficult numbers were rigged with people behind the scenes with calculators helping Rachel out. Why is it so satisfying to see her make these large calculations at the blink of an eye
you just learn a lot of them off by heart. There's no new numbers for her to learn. It's always the same ones. Once you learn a good deal of the "two digit number multiplied by another two digit number" sums, it makes things a lot easier. You don't have to bother with the smaller 2 digit numbers either, you do them in your head anyway.

The numbers game just stresses me out & gives me flashbacks to school maths lessons where you’d be picked at random to stand up & answer a math’s question/times table.
It wouldn’t matter how simple the question, the fear of being made to stand up & talk pushed the ability to do any maths out of my head. Absolutely mad method for ‘teaching’ children.
Sometimes I would have the answer before being selected but then ‘forget it’ once I had to say aloud.

MiniAmethyst ikr wtf
most of the time you can take the prime factorization of the number and that’ll give you the answer. if its not perfect you can try adding or subtracting different numbers in the set, and it usually provides an answer pretty quickly
True. There's a few tricks you learn for the numbers game that make you look cleverer than you really are.
Everyone has relatively similar processing power. "intelligence" is often all about efficiency via such tricks.
I remember seeing this ages ago
12-10 = 2
62 * 2 = 124
124 - 1 + 7 = 130.
+Kanjoos „ProJared 2” Lahookvinhaakvinhookvin
12*(10+1+5) = 192
192 - 62 = 130
Dawid Pietrzak Nicely done.
7 *12 =84
84 +62 =146
146 -10 -5 -1 = 130
12x5=60
60+62=122
122+7+1=130

What does it say about my brain when it completely missed the fact that 13x10 is 130, but then on the second one went "87x8=696, 12x3=36, 36-8 = 28, 28+ 696= 724"?
+DutchDread also, 37x 17 (10+6+1)= 629, 4x5=20. 629+ 20=649 BOEIAH!! Edit: she did it the same XD fuck yeah.
DutchDread It is spelled boo yah.
scootscootriot1020 Didn't realize it had an official spelling.
scootscootriot1020 it actually derives from the word 'booyakasha'
If it's any consolation I totally missed that. Did a few "huh... 12x10... where do I find another 10 from?" attempts then settled on 62*10 = 620, 620/5 = 124, 7-1 = 6, 124 + 6 = 130
I did the first one using all the numbers and felt quite proud... then realised I'd missed the bleedin' obvious 😂
Another solution for 649 is:
A: 5x10=500
B: 37x4=148
Then add together
A+B+1=649
3:22 I got it in about 23 seconds, but I was surprised by this because what I'd done was
87x8=696
696+4=700
700+(3x8)=724
I took a slight shortcut by getting to 28 with (12x3)-8
Two years late, but I got it an even more roundabout way
87x8 = 696
12+3 = 15
8/4=2
696 + (15 x 2) = 724
Who even does 37x17 in your head? Lmao she's too smart
37 is a special number, well known by numberphiles, because 3*37 = 111.
This means, any multiple of 3 (smaller than 30) multiplied by 37 is super easy to compute.
18*37 = 6*3*37 = 6*111 = 666.
And 17 being = 18 - 1, we have
17*37 = 666 - 37 = 666 - 36 -1 = 629
Easy peazy.
that's cool, thank you
Personally I find the easiest way to do it is to just do 37*2=74, add a 0 so the 2 represents 20 and then take away 111.
40*17 = 680
17*3 = 51
680-51 = 629

@@Musicienne-DAB1995 Dont try to hit a round number near the target then make up the difference... e.g. for 649 most people will try to get 640 or 650 first then add 9 or take 1. Instead you should use your biggest number to get as close to it as possible then make up the difference.
She has a math degree, so she obviously has a number talent. Not trying to sound too cocky, but I have a math degree myself and I get the answer in like 5 seconds. The 3 x 6 x 37 =666 is something that just takes a second for you if you deal with numbers every day. It just comes naturally, just like typing e.g., you just do it without even thinking about it. For a mathematician, writing it down takes longer than actually doing the math.
Getting that conundrum in 1 second surprised me more
I completely glanced over the 1st one as being so easy.
My method:
12x7=84
62+84=146
10+5+1=16
146-16=130
Oof, wasted my brainpower
Exactly how I did it, too.
Oh! The special number game!
I did the 649 one different. Don‘t know if this is allowed though
5^4=625
6*10-37+1=24
625+24=649
I got the first one almost right away, but I did it by dividing the 10 by the 5 to get 2, then multiplying that by 62 to get 124, then adding the 7 to 131, and then subtracting the 1 to get 130. I was so pleased with myself for spotting the solution so quickly, and then I felt ridiculous when the contestants explained their much simpler and more obvious solution. Then I more or less did it again with the second one: I multiplied 87 by 8 to get 696, then I multiplied the other 8 by the 3 to get 24, then I added the 24 to the 4 to get 28, then that to the 696 to get 724. I felt pretty silly again when the simpler solution was revealed. But then I felt really good when I got the third one, admittedly right at the buzzer, and neither contestant got it: I added 37 to 6 to get 43 and 10 to 5 to get 15, then multiplied 43 times 15 to 645, then just added the 4 to that to get 649. Of course, I never would have gotten balalaika if I had had thirty days to work on it.
(37-10=27) (27x6x4=648) (648+1=649)
Kevin K 37-(6*4)=13 (13*5*10)-1=649
My answers were a bit more complex lol. Couldn't even comprehend how easy the solutions in the video were.
For first one, 62-12=50, 50*4=200, 7*10=70, 200-70=130
For second one, 87*8=696, 12*3=36, 36-8=28, 696+28= 724
For third one, (37−(6*4))=13, 13*(5*10)=650-1=649
With the first one, I did:
5×10=50, 50+62+12=124, 124+7=131, 131-1=130.
How characteristically convoluted of me.
Is it easiest to 130, or most numbers used?
I did (5*10) + 62 + 12 + 7 - 1
+Morten Larsen Neither. The closer to the target you are, the more points you get, but how many numbers you use has no effect on your score.
LastStar007 Thanks ;)
Or: ((62*10) / 5) + 7 - 1
(12×5)+(7×10) did it for me
I did (7-5)×62+7-1
5:29 that guy fell in love
I’m happy to say I could do all but one
I was so proud of myself for getting the 130 in a ridiculous way I didn't notice how easy it was.
(Dumbass me did 12*10, then made 10 by 62-7, 55/5 then 11-1.)
6 x 4 = 24
37 - 24 = 13
13 x 5 = 65
65 x 10 = 650
650 - 1 = 649
