First, let me just say I love you two. Secondly, I'd like to tell you about one of my best experiences in life. I'm a long-time high school science teacher, and four years ago I lead a team of other teachers and students on a trip to Peru (Machu Picchu, etc.) It was a wonderful experience, but one special moment was the night we walked out at night onto a pier that went far out into Lake Titicaca. This was just adults, the teens stayed in the hotel. So a bunch of us, all gracefully aging hippies, walked to the end of the pier. We looked up at actually, for the first time in our lives, saw the Southern Cross. One of us summoned up the song on their cell phone, and we sang and danced to it, beneath the actual star formation. I'll never forget that night.
What an awesome experience - no doubt a 'one off' you'll always remember. I'm not too fond of this whole aging 'thing' ( turned 77 this past September ). However, I know one thing for sure - we had the best music of the 20th century hands down! CSN exemplifies some of the quintessential talent of that era.

The Southern Cross is a star constellation only visible below the equator …just amazing when at sea with no earthly lights to impede the view and effects.
This is not a Southern band. It’s a California band…the LA sound, actually. When they created CSN, they wanted to be able to sing harmonies so tight that it sounded like one voice! Stephen Stills is singing lead on this one. You should watch a documentary on how they got together and became a group. They are a Supergroup, coming from The Byrds, The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield. Thanks to people like Mama Cass, they found each other. It’s a great story, including how Neil Young joined the group.
"Echo in the Canyon" from 2019 is a great documentary about the musicians who lived in or hung out together in Laurel Canyon in the late 60s. It was put together by Jakob Dylan, son of Bob Dylan and lead singer of The Wallflowers, who interviews a lot of the surviving participants of the day. There's also a great soundtrack that goes with it. In it, Jakob sings duets with musicians from both then AND more recent times, covering music of the period. Several artists such as Beck (not to be confused with the late Jeff Beck), It does mention CSNY, but the focus is on the "Laurel Canyon sound", which CSNY was a big part of. Highly recommended!
One of my favorite songs, although this video leaves out the last verse which is one on the most poignant ever written: "So we cheated and we lied and we tested. And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested. Someone fine will come along and make me forget about loving you, and the southern cross."
Crosby ,Stills Nash ( and later Young) were of the Woidstock "hippie" era...no Southern Rock here. During this time before heavier rock, late sixties there was folk type sings. I was in my late teens when these guys were out . Time of peace, love and great music and a lot of "partaking" in what made the artists of that time more creative and the music more of an " experience " for the listeners( most ,not all) and I happen to think they were great looking people making great music...no so artificial as so much of later decades. Old music is the best ,had more talented people .
One of my favorite songs of all time. It's beautifully sad. About realizing that your relationship is over and accepting it. "We never failed to fail" is a hard truth.
Those harmonies are on point!. This song was meant to be sang like this. What a loss it would have been for us to not ever have been able to hear these voices and this amazing song 😢 💔 ❤ 😔 💙 😪 😢 💔
Because David Crosby did not reunite with Stills and Nash until the album was well underway, his vocals are not featured on the album version, although he did appear in the video and subsequently sang the song with the group in live performances. This song also features Timothy B. Schmit (from Poco AND The Eagles) on background vocals.
Well, when he WAS there he was so wasted he could barely function. But one of my favorite Crosby songs came from this album - "Delta". Jackson Browne forced him to sit at the piano and finish the song, even though Crosby wanted to wander off and get high(er). It was the last song he wrote before he went to prison and got off the drugs.
I have loved this song sense it first came out, sadly you got the radio edit not the entire song. the last verse explains so much. Keep rocking guys, ill include the last verse here: [Verse 3] So we cheated and we lied and we tested And we never failed to fail It was the easiest thing to do You will survive being bested Somebody fine Will come along, make me forget about loving you In the Southern Cross
@@mainmanjimmiblue The audio on this vid is HORRIBLE, especially considering how beautifully produced this album was! And to edit the last verse? smh...
CS&N will go down in history as one of the greatest bands of their era. and Amber is so right when she says they are simple..... they do the simple things so well. RIP David, a troubled soul finally at rest.
I'm so happy you listened to this one! It's actually my favorite out of all of the beautiful C,S & N songs. Glad you loved it! Stephen Stills, who sings lead, wrote this song after a terrible divorce, in which he was left with just his boat. He took off sailing the Pacific, and wrote this during the voyage. Once again, I want to recommend Dragonforce's "Through the Fire and the Flame." You will be amazed!
Well sort of. He did take a boat trip after his divorce and when he wrote the lyrics he used that as an inspiration, but the boat trip and divorce were some time before he wrote this, and this song is actually a rewritten version of Rick and Michael Curtis' "Seven League Boots." In Stills' own words: "I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it."
@@tonydenucci3684 he would have died years ago if he didn't go to prison. He was crazy. His drug dealer died just after he traded him the pink slip to his Mercedes in exchange for some blow, so he broke into the dealer's house and stole his pink slip back so he could trade it again.🤣
Crosby, Stills and Nash released this as their second single from their 1982 album " Daylight Again". Southern Cross refers to the Crux Constellation in the southern hemisphere that has been used in naval navigation forever. Their beautiful harmonies are spot on and as sweet as honey. The acoustic guitars are a perfect addition. Great time for music. 🎶🎶🎶 Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
AAAAH! I'm so happy! I've been saying for a year y'all need to hear these guys for real! Their Woodstock recording of Suite Judy Blue Eyes not only sounds nothing like the studio recording, but the second and third movements aren't even on the live Woodstock recording, because it wouldn't have translated without the bass, drums, etc. So you've heard the abbreviated and puny sound version of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" and possibly THE most campfire/acoustic-feeling song they have, "Teach Your Children". Don't judge them as "easy listening" by just these songs. Imagine if you had decided what the Beatles were all about based on the first two or three songs you heard. They do have songs that rock (especially when they're joined by Neil Young). At the very least, you'd call most of their catalog "folk rock" and not "easy listening" or even "soft rock". Maybe "yacht rock" lol. You gotta hear their version of Joni Mitchell's song, "Woodstock." It rocks; the Neil Young guitar lead right from the top is nice and crunchy. You gotta hear their version of "Wooden Ships" (cowritten by members of CSN and Jefferson Airplane); it's got a great kind of psychedelic feel. Please listen to the studio version of "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", if not for a reaction, at least as a favor to yourselves. The studio version is an entirely different song, and far superior. They scored that Woodstock gig coming off one of the hottest debut albums of all time, but the Woodstock gig was not long after band formation, so they really weren't ready, and the recording was crap to boot. Love y'all's music and movie reactions, as always!
Me too but I think you mean Nash and Stills. Crosby did not sing on the song for the album but obviously performed it live numerous times. He’s in the video, yes, but this was done way after the song was released
@@Foxyjk50 Yep. David was in rehab at the time this song was recorded, so they brought in a few other singers to help out: Art Garfunkel, and Timothy B. Schmit. Pretty good substitutes, if you ask me...
@@moosecat Actually - the group had broken up and Crosby was only brought back in because Atlantic Records let Nash and Stills know that they wouldn't release the album or pay for it if Crosby was not involved. He brought a couple of songs and his contribution to vocals was severely limited and - of course - not used at all in this song.
Crosby isn't singing on this tune (at least not this studio version). He was basically dealing with legal problems....in fact he may have been in jail during it's recording. That being said, you're hearing Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Timothy B. Schmit (bass player/singer for the Eagles).
It’s crazy that you played this just a day or so ago. 😢DAVID CROSBY HAS PASSED. 😓 There will never be another to match the harmonies that Crosby, Stills, Nash, (and Young) delivered. Beautiful easy songs. RIP David Crosby. Your music keeps warming hearts every day and will for generations. ❤🙏🏼🕊
R.I.P. David Crosby. Thank you for your music not just from Crosby, Steele, Nash & Young but from when you were with The Byrd's. Your music is what put you in the Rock -n- Roll Hall Fame not once but twice under two different bands.🥲
You know your relationship is on the rocks when the following line describes how you treat each other. "We never failed to fail. It was the easiest thing to do."
There have been some amazing musicians who've achieved Mr. Fantasy status (if it was the straight life he had, we wouldn't have known him all these years). He really struggled and I feel we were blessed when he shared his voice. The first time I heard Hold My Hand (Hootie & The Blowfish) I said, No Way, call me crazy but I think I just heard David Crosby singing back up!!! Play it again....NOW!!!
If you guys like harmonies, nobody did it better than The Eagles. You should hear Seven Bridges Road. And while listening to it, remember it was recorded live (and 5 voices). The best harmony I’ve ever heard.
I'm a couple days behind and I came on here to specifically recommend "Seven Bridges Road." Glad y'all beat me to it. My late great rock hating dad fell in love with Eagles because of their harmonies which are unbelievable in this song! Absolute perfection recorded live! And, the sadly haunting "Hole in the World" about 9/11 shows they never lost it.
If you want to hear one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, check out Crosby Stills and Nash with "Lady Of the Island." Amber will have goosebumps. Another of their really great songs is "Wooden Ships." Honestly, you could pick most any song off their first two albums, especially the first one.
There is a verse that wasn’t included in this video. So we cheated, and we lied, and we tested And we never failed to fail It was the easiest thing to do do You will survive being bested Somebody fine will come along Make me forget about loving you And the Southern Cross Maybe try to find the longer version to listen to. @@SonOfaSonOfaMason They were still doing that throughout the 80s & 90s. The single-edit was designed for top 40 stations that had to meet a demand of playing as many songs as possible, every hour.
This is my favorite song ever. I can't explain why, but it touches me in a way no other song ever has. For some reason, this version left off the last gorgeous verse: "So we cheated and we lied and we tested, and we never failed to fail -- it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested - somebody fine will come along and make me forget about loving you, in the Southern Cross."
Love this song, but this isn't the full version! If you guys find a longer one, it continues with "So we cheated and we lied, and we tested". Definitely give the last verse a listen; it really ties everything together. A beautiful song about loss, failed relationships and moving on, set to some beautiful imagery.
Vale - David Crosby One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81. Along with his mates Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young, Crosby created some of the most iconic late 60's & early 70's music. I know they started in the mid-60's, though to me they epitomise WOODSTOCK. The Vocal harmonies rival anyone else in the music world. Their Guitar work and their sublime Bass lines were ground-breaking and ahead of their time. Even as a very young child I knew their music was very special. RIP Mate, thanks for all the musical joy you brought us.
Perfect song!!!! Great harmonies on all of their songs!! “Marrakesh Express “ bouncy tune (different than a lot of songs) and harmonies!!! Ps. I don’t think anyone has reacted to this one yet … you guys could be the first!!!
"THE LEE SHORE" is a stunning c.s.n.y song a real hippy laid back classic 1969 an absolute gorgeous track a real beauty for reaction, great reaction to a great band. ; )
This is my favorite CSN song of all time. This is a Southern California sound from Laurel Canyon. Many groups such as The Mamas and The Papas, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, etc. made the music scene in Laurel Canyon.
Really nothing to do with Laurel Canyon or the gang from there. The song is based on Seven League Boots written by the Curtis Brothers who recorded it with Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham, and Thom Mooney. Stephen Stills just wrote different lyrics.
@@thomasgill2358 Since you started with "This is my favorite song of all time" I sort of thought you might have been referring to that sound. LOL! The "Laurel Canyon Sound" is nothing more than a catchy new descriptive of a sound ("folk rock") that got it's start in numerous venues in places such as Yorkville, Greenwich Village, and California. Most people only know of Laurel Canyon's link to music due to a popular TV documentary. The tons of marketing to ride that wave have made "Laurel Canyon Sound" a popular - but dubious - new descriptive.
Stills wrote this while on a boat trip. He was trying to process and heal from his divorce. He describes how by harnessing nature's power, one can heal.
My favorite from CSNY is Almost Cut My Hair with David Crosby singing lead vocals and Neil Young’s guitar and Steven Stills’ guitar also! Awesome, different from some of their others!!❤️
RIP David Crosby (1/19/23). Thank you for so many years of beautiful music and harmonies. Rest easy. BTW, that voice you were speaking about is Stephen Stills.
My favorite song by them.BTW: Stephen Stills is lead vocal on this song.David Crocby is firthest from the screen during the harmonizing scenes ,with Graham Nash center and Stephen cloest to the camera.Neil Young was often a fourth with the group but not at this time.
Saw them in concert back in the 80s. 1/2 of show was acoustic/ 1/2 was electric. The harmonies done during the acoustic part were on point. During that part of the show David Crosby told the crowd to be quiet during the songs so everyone could enjoy the harmonies. Everyone cheered. What a great concert.
Harmonies? Yes, great harmonies are a wonderful thing. "Seven Bridges Road" from The Eagles live album is a phenomenal 5 part harmony that never disappoints.
I love when you take us on a memory journey..I had babies of age 6 and 4 when this came out, I hear this, close my eyes and I am dancing around the living room with them again.. thank you! 💞
The word I always use to describe CSN's harmonies is SOARING. When they decide to hit it, their harmonies just soar in unison. Their voices just blend together so well, especially on this song and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. JMO.

I have a greatest hits and it has the truncated version and pissed me off
Yeah cutting that last verse off is TERRIBLE
Crosby ,Stills Nash ( and later Young) were of the Woidstock "hippie" era...no Southern Rock here. During this time before heavier rock, late sixties there was folk type sings. I was in my late teens when these guys were out . Time of peace, love and great music and a lot of "partaking" in what made the artists of that time more creative and the music more of an " experience " for the listeners( most ,not all) and I happen to think they were great looking people making great music...no so artificial as so much of later decades. Old music is the best ,had more talented people .
Oh yes! I knew something was off on this.
LOVE THIS SONG!!!!
One of my favorites!!!
More:
1. Marrakesh Express
2. Teach Your Children
great harmonies!!!
One of my favorite songs of all time. It's beautifully sad. About realizing that your relationship is over and accepting it. "We never failed to fail" is a hard truth.
But also about being okay with yourself and finding balance even so. "She is all that I have left, _and Music is her name!_ "
It was the easiest thing to do.
It's too bad this is an edited, short version, completely missing that verse. :/
Passed today. RIP David Crosby 1/19/2023
RIP David Crosby loved your tunes
Great song! "Wasted on the Way" is cool too
My favorite of theirs!👍✌️
I think one of their best songs that showcase their harmonies is helplessly hoping. It’s beautiful
Those harmonies are on point!. This song was meant to be sang like this. What a loss it would have been for us to not ever have been able to hear these voices and this amazing song 😢 💔 ❤ 😔 💙 😪 😢 💔
This song has special meaning to me... but it's also one of their best... I'll be a fan forever...😊❤
CS&N is one of, if not the first groups that I can recall having such wonderful harmonies. Their harmonies are timeless.
Because David Crosby did not reunite with Stills and Nash until the album was well underway, his vocals are not featured on the album version, although he did appear in the video and subsequently sang the song with the group in live performances. This song also features Timothy B. Schmit (from Poco AND The Eagles) on background vocals.
He overdubbed his vocal for the single.
@@willdwyer6782 Never heard that Crosby's voice was overdubbed on the single before. Where do you get that info from?
I have loved this song sense it first came out, sadly you got the radio edit not the entire song. the last verse explains so much. Keep rocking guys, ill include the last verse here:
[Verse 3]
So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine
Will come along, make me forget about loving you
In the Southern Cross
I knew that was missing! I was driving through a heavy rain and couldn't comment at the time.
Yeah, a lot of the reactions to this song use this truncated version. Unfortunate.
Yeah, that last verse is so important. Also, the audio on this video isn't great. Peace, everyone!
@@mainmanjimmiblue The audio on this vid is HORRIBLE, especially considering how beautifully produced this album was! And to edit the last verse? smh...
I thought it was just my crappy good headphones, but yes, the audio on this is hirribke and why would you eave out type past verse? smh too
Timothy B Schmidt from Eagles (I Can’t Tell You Why singer) sings backing vocals in this.
:-)
RIP David Crosby. Thank you for being a big part of the soundtrack to my childhood.
Sadly, David Crosby passed away today. May he RIP.
Southern Cross refers to the Crux Constellation in the southern hemisphere
that has been used in naval navigation forever.
Their beautiful harmonies are spot on and as sweet as honey. The acoustic guitars are a perfect addition. Great time for music. 🎶🎶🎶 Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
We Love our Canadian Brothers and Sisters!🥰
👍✌️🇨🇦🎶🤗❤️
Crux is visible as far north as Hawaii for half the year.
One reason the harmonies sound so good is Art Garfunkel and Anthony B Smit are singing background. Crosby actually didn't sing on it.
@@jmwsr474 Timothy B Schmitt?
RIP D. Crosby. Southern Cross is so sweet listening to those harmonies.
A filling memorial , You will be missed M r Crosby.
The harmonies of Crosby and Nash in the chorus sends chills down my back every time I hear it. One of their best works.
@@moosecat yes, in rehab. And I agree, they sound wonderful on this track!
@@BobSoltis1 It's funny how the groups known for their vocal harmonies are usually the ones that have the most acrimonious histories and break-ups.
"EVERYBODY I LOVE YOU", "WOODEN SHIPS",
"4 & 20", " CARRY ON", "ALMOST CUT MY HAIR", " WOODSTOCK",ALL ARE GREAT!!🎵🎶🎸🎶🎵
David Crosby's gift is simply pure harmony. You sing a melody, and he'll drop a harmony so perfect...
Yes, and he does it instantly from the first practice, I read! What a gift besides being an excellent guitarist.
@@jeffwestcott6902 I think Crosby was in rehab. I believe Art Garfunkel also helped on vocals.
@@moosecat That's probably what it was. I knew he wasn't on the song, and was used spottily on the record....song still sounds amazing.
@@jeffwestcott6902 Yes, that's true. He made it on.the video and also sang it live on tours. You know ole' Dave!
Absolutely love this song, verses choruses harmonies
You know your relationship is on the rocks when the following line describes how you treat each other. "We never failed to fail. It was the easiest thing to do."
I wish this wasn't the chopped version and had included that verse!
And we never failed to fail. It was the easiest thing to do.... THIS hit me hard at one time 30 years ago or so... and lit a fire under my ass.
Every song I've ever heard about sailing, even sea shanties, take me away and I can almost smell the salt water!!!
RIP Crosby. you had style you had grace you had an amazing voice.
He brought Joy to us ALL through his Art... He will be missed💔🙏
I believe their first gig together was at Woodstock!❤❤❤❤❤no! It was their second gig!
If you guys like harmonies, nobody did it better than The Eagles. You should hear Seven Bridges Road. And while listening to it, remember it was recorded live (and 5 voices). The best harmony I’ve ever heard.
Seven Bridges Road is a GREAT song. I had forgotten about it. At my age, there is a lot about the 70s and 80s that I don't remember. 🪴
Seven Bridges Road has such great harmonies it's like they were just showing off. In a good way!
I'm a couple days behind and I came on here to specifically recommend "Seven Bridges Road." Glad y'all beat me to it. My late great rock hating dad fell in love with Eagles because of their harmonies which are unbelievable in this song! Absolute perfection recorded live! And, the sadly haunting "Hole in the World" about 9/11 shows they never lost it.
th-cam.com/video/9-sQfOIXGb8/w-d-xo.html
While their harmonies were great, I believe CSN's were unmatched.
Amber and Jordan, it's been a long time since we heard this group. The Eagles,-(Desperado)'73. Keep up with the good work 😎👍
They REALLY need to check out the Eagles 7 Bridges road!! The live version.
@@chuckragland9972 yes they do. Trying to get them to come back to them.
Who knew you two would experience this great song the day before David Crosby passed. His voice and songs are treasures.
R.I.P. Mr. David Crosby, Thank You the memories and the harmonies

So we cheated, and we lied, and we tested
And we never failed to fail
It was the easiest thing to do do
You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along
Make me forget about loving you
And the Southern Cross
Maybe try to find the longer version to listen to.
Love this song, and this channel. Be Safe and Be Blessed Rob Squad Family.
The last part was edited out. Probably to keep it short, just like they used to do on AM radio stations in the 1970s and earlier.
My fav verse of the entire song. Hits me every time.
Always annoys me when people react to the edited song and don’t look for the full version!!!
@@SonOfaSonOfaMason They were still doing that throughout the 80s & 90s. The single-edit was designed for top 40 stations that had to meet a demand of playing as many songs as possible, every hour.
@@kasheppard503 Well, if you're not familiar with which is which, how would they even know about it? It IS frustrating, though.
RIP David Crosby you filled our youth with song.
Vale - David Crosby
One of the best & greatest Singer/Musicians has passed away aged 81.
“Marrakesh Express “
bouncy tune (different than a lot of songs) and harmonies!!!
Ps. I don’t think anyone has reacted to this one yet … you guys could be the first!!!
RIP David Crosby. Thanks for decades of my life's soundtrack.
Thank you David. All that I can say is just thank you !!
"THE LEE SHORE" is a stunning c.s.n.y song a real hippy laid back classic 1969 an absolute gorgeous track a real beauty for reaction, great reaction to a great band. ; )
Crosby, Stills and Nash - love love love the harmony and melody. Their voices combine into one beautiful sound. Love it!
@@BobSoltis1 I wasn't talking about the song itself. I was talking about CSN's sound.
RIP David Crosby, your music lives on!
Wow, that's timing. RIP DC
Not simple at all. These harmonists are so rare and precious.
This is my favorite by them. Great choice, and reaction my friends! 😃🤙

Stills wrote this while on a boat trip. He was trying to process and heal from his divorce. He describes how by harnessing nature's power, one can heal.

The word I always use to describe CSN's harmonies is SOARING. When they decide to hit it, their harmonies just soar in unison. Their voices just blend together so well, especially on this song and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. JMO.
