My first bass was an Ibanez bass, and I have to say they really are fantastic for the price you pay for them. This bass however, I'm amazed how clear cut everything sounds, love that the upper register notes still sound like it's coming from a bass, and not to mention that the bass looks very nice! Great demo as always Ed!
I have always loved the Ibanez line of basses. My very first bass was a Ibanez Les Paul Recording copy of a Gibson. Glad to see them on their own, taking no prisoners.
@pleximanic - Actually, I originally wanted to review the Willis bass, but Ibanez asked if I would do the Veasley instead since it was newer. I will ask for the Willis the next time I get to review an Ibanez.
@XaviOrtega1 - Theoretically, but it depends on the bass. If your bass is being made custom, tell the guy to make sure the control cavity is big enough.
@MobiusBandwidth The "hunk" bridge design is to improve resonance of the strings into the body, indivdual string saddles reduce sympathetic vibration (when one note causes teh same note in octaves to sound, on some basses it can be a serious issue, but most of the time it just adds a tiny but of "mud") These saddles run into the body so provide just as much sustain and resonance but less sypathetic vibrations. for $5k Ibanez did think things through!
@riccaliolio - Don't try to stick your entire finger in between the strings for popping. And keep your thumb as parallel to the string as you can for slapping to avoid hitting the wrong string. Or... get a bass with wider spacing.
@dTbFan72 - Lots of influences. Jaco, Marcus Miller, Larry Graham, Jerry Jemmott, Chuck Rainey, James Jamerson, George Porter, Willie Weeks, Jack Casady, Michael Manring, Alain Caron..... and that's just electric bass players that come to mind. Favorite band? Steely Dan, The Meters.... Bill Evans Trio, Weather Report.... and many more.
You could almost call this a review of the Aguilar OBP-3 as well - I have them in my 4 Spectors, and they're absolutely killer preamps! Great review of the electronics... and the bass it's attached to! :D
@BassGuitarMag The K5, when tuned to standard is actually REALLY smooth! Its designed to have very few mids (but its very versatile, as you can dial almost all of them out, but the pre-amp is fantastic!) Great smooth jazzy sound, really lightweight and it has a great neck! (Its smaller than a normal SGDR and they are LIGHT anyway!) :) These are almost custom basses pretty much! And its not as bad as Tom Araya ESP shop one! Its like 4 to 5K for nothing more than his LTD one!
The price tag is spot on. Remember this is a SIGNATURE bass. Sure you can pop out a Fodera or Tobias bass for that price, but this is Ibanez and this is what Gerald Veasley sounds like not Victor Wooten. There is a difference of course, but you gotta admit this is one heavy gun of a bass. And Ed makes it even more amazing.
@Metal626 - It could happen. I'm interested in that bass, but it depends on my assignments. I write for Bass Player mag now, and they are not hiring me to do video at this point, just writing assignments. But if Ibanez wants me to do a review... I'm down for that!
Speaking of reviewing Ibanez again. How about the new ATK1200 prestige or even the high end grooveline? As always Ed, you give great review, keep up the good work! In the future it would be nice to see some Orange Amps too.
@12matty31 But its not just about tone! I mean this thing has an INSANELY slick neck(with custom neck profile), and 14mm string spacing, a custom finish, hand built, and the pickups are custom "voiced" (like custom output and exact number of winds etc, though its meant to sound like an SR) As well as the features Ed mentions! The neck is as thin as the JEM guitar, and the Aguilar OBP-3 pre-amp combined with all those figures shows why its a custom! Though $5K i'm still not totally sure...
@nolliefIip - I like the Shuttle 6.0, Streamliner 900, Shuttle Maz 9.2, that's what I use depending on the gig. There are other good amps out there too. I like the TC Electronics stuff too.
It's the price for the MIJ. The one that you can find at a bass dealer is sold around 1000€ in Europe. It should around 1000$. Or buy the SR1206 Premium for the price !

You can just buy pickups and preamp for the 36 and save substantial amounts of money. The only IMPORTANT concern in my opinion is the Wenge strip in the 1006 supposedly really helps stabilize the neck with all the tension from the 6 strings. That alone could be a deal breaker with the 36. Opinions???
5k wow! I like the fact that it's an Ibanez, it has somewhat of a "sleeper" look. People wouldn't know that it's a top notch bass. It is kinda humbling. If I had 5k to spend on a bass I wouldn't buy it. Just because it's not my style, but if someone gives me one, I sure as heck would treasure it. Now the true test! side by side comparison to a higher end regular SR Ibanez bass? SR706? I'm curious how much of a difference it is in sound.
hey Ed you're the best!!! love your gear and instruments reviews!! thanks! best wishes from Argentina... pd: thats a new rackspace for your genz benz amp?
Hey man, I dig and love your reviews on everything, but I am curious if you will do a review on the Ibanez SR Prestige SR5005E? I CANNOT find that bass In Austin, San Antonio, or Houston area here in TX.
Hi Ed!. I´m making my own fretless bass, but I still can´t decide wich pickups will fit better.I´m looking for a warm vintage tone,In fact I want it to sound as near as possible to an upright, but I also want good response with the harmonics. So what do you recomend?,sinlges, humbuckers, active or passive?,Duncan,DiMarzio,or EMG?. By the way,I´m a HUGE fan, you´re awesome!.
@tylerwylie - Have you tried the Stainless Lo Riders? I just put a set on my Smith 6, and they are working out great. I would think they might be a better fit for your Bongo than the Fat Beams... hex core vs. round core... 34" scale bolt on neck.... probably benefit from a tighter feel than the Fat Beams. Just my opinion.
Hi Ed, long time ago you mentioned that you were going to do a review on a Fender Steve Harris P Bass, are you still planing to do it ?. Great Work, Amazing Videos !!!
Wow, those chords really sing. 5 grand is a lot for a bass but this looks to be extremely well built with great features. Tone is not my style but it sounds killer for what it is. Seems like it get be a seriously versatile bass.
great bass it sounds awesome, ed i have a question about your right hand and the angle you have your wrist bent at. Ive read a few things about having it not bent but yet i see everybody doing it, what would be your opinion as a teacher?
@henry12350 - I like Rics, classic tone and look. They are well made US instruments, and yes, most likely I will not get to review one. They sell every bass they make, they don't seem to be in need of promotion.
5k sounds fair for something built by master luthiers. Just because it has an Ibanez name doesn't make it inferior to other basses made to similar level of craftsmanship. The value is up the player in the end, but i get the impression many players are brand conscious for the wrong reasons.
hey ed! i've always wondered this. what do you think of Rickenbackers? i know that you prolly wont be able to get one to review given there are really only two kinds out there right now. still i respect what your opinion alot and would like to know what you think! thanks :D

Myung has tight string spacing on his Custom Musicman Bongo 6. I guess economy of movement is correct as John Pattitucci said in one of his old bass videos.
Interesting little fact here, the neck on this bass is thinner than some of the necks on certain Ibanez guitars, such as the Joe Satriani models aswell as the Paul Gilbert Fireman.
it would be great if you could show a bass guitar with bartolini clasic bass series, with single/serie/parallel switches, I´ll buy a medium quality ibanez and i´m wondering in upgrade the pick ups with US classic serie bartolinis and aguilar obp-3 but I haven´t desided yet. sorry about my bad english
Hi man epic sound. Hows that bass whats your feeling from that? And how about slapping cause i am slapping a lot but i think about that a lot. And i know there is a little much closer spacing for strings. And is it good for metal ? Like mudvayne or the arusha accord a lots fo slapping and stuff
Hi Ed, i have a big important question, can the aguilar obp3 be installed in any bass? I'm getting my custom bass with EMG pickups, and i was wondering if i can add a aguilar preamp? please answer back... Greetings
@BassGuitarMag yeah its not the same, since Alain plays it much more faster, but i thought you were doing it slowly to show better the slap sound, couse the fast stuff sometimes looses the pure sound, couse of all the percusive sounds. I guess amazing bass players share a consciousness then. Nice reviews btw, a hug from Argentina.
The price point seems really high indeed, it still to me seems to sound no different from the SR 506 I had many years ago. They should have priced it slightly above the prestige series imo. you can get many a nice hand crafted bass made here in the US for that price...... I find that very strange.
@bustabo23 - Really? I've never heard that song. I guess I must have lifted that lick through some sort of psychic ability. It's just a funk blues in D... but I'll check out Alain's thing to see if I really did steal it.
@MrTheguyofbigbite - Good idea, very labor intensive. And then, there's the big question... who pays me to do it? I did do a pretty extensive review of all the different DR strings with sound samples.... it's up at the Bass Emporium website. Go to bassemporium (dot) com, look under resources, then newsletters, scroll down the page and you'll find it.
Just gotta practice that economy of motion thing man. I've learned how to do the double thumb technique on a Yamaha JM2, very tight string spacing, tons of people will say its not a slap bass. Perfect practice makes perfect.
Great looking, fantastic sounding bass. I have no doubt in my mind that the construction is top notch, but for 5 grand I think I'd rather have a bass custom built to MY specifications instead of someone elses.
John Jareo Don't know what he thinks about the GVB 36, but I have one that I paid about $700 for used. It's a great axe. Has the same narrow neck and string spacing. The electronics are killer and booms the signal through my Ampeg SVT 7 PRO, and out of the matched 410HLF Classic cab. Took what would have amounted to the other $4.3g's for the model he demos here and bought a new Ken Smith custom 6'er. I like it better than both of the Ibbies. 👑🎸🎵
I've always loved this bass. It's the thinnest neck I've seen on any 6 string bass. Most of them are a little wide for my taste. But this GVB1006 is just thin enough and perfect for my hand. BUT....damn, I wish Ibanez can do more different colors, though. I would buy it immediately if it's Red/wine/natural/brown/ or blue'ish. To me, I just hate "yellow" or ugly yellow'ish "Amber." This is why I haven't bought it yet. Lol. However, if I see that Ibanez will NOT add more color options, then I'll have no choice but buying it. Then, I'll immediately sand it and change to my taste (red wine or dark-brown wood stained). 😜
sounds nice, but a "cheap" Ibanez is plenty awesome. I think one solid hunk of brass is a better idea for bridge resonance. also my engineer is totally over active electronics, which he says are all inherently noisy. I like the neck reinforcing aspect of the wood, I have a 5 and a 6 string Ibanez, my 5's neck is bowing a little. this does sound a little cleaner than my Ibanez 6 in the upper register.
First off, Ed makes everything sound good. The thing with Ibanez -- the pr-amps are so specific, they all sound pretty much the same -- making the series with Bartolinis an amazing deal for around $600. (And they look nice too.) But $6000? For an Ibanez? That's absurd. Actually it's absurd for any electric bass.
Nice review, and nice bass. Signature models are always that expensive, IMHO it's nonsense. For 5k I could get a top notch luthier bass built on my very own specifics. Well, people are free to spend their money their way.
Can't decide which is the highlight of this video: the bass or the bass player. Ed rocks it again.
Always Ed...never the bass...lol
@BassGuitarMag Thanks, it's always an honor to get advice from guys like you, really appreciate it.

It has great tone and a nice natural finish, the bass sounds great.
@nolliefIip - Yeah, between all the various models they make, you can get pretty much any sound you want. Great stuff.
The tone is incredible!!!!
@Shilinsky - Yes, it's done, just waiting for it to get printed. Probably in a month.
First song is D-Code from the great Alain Caron. For those wondering that.
@XaviOrtega1 - Theoretically, but it depends on the bass. If your bass is being made custom, tell the guy to make sure the control cavity is big enough.

When you slapped the high C with the bridge pickup it sounded close to a Clavinet haha.
Nice review and awesome playing as usual.

Any chance you are demoing a Ibanez gwb1005 in the near future?
Thanks for doing the best demos on the planet!

Is the 1006 worth $5000 for a reinforced Wenge neck, fancier top, fret treatment, better pickups and preamp?
You can just buy pickups and preamp for the 36 and save substantial amounts of money.
The only IMPORTANT concern in my opinion is the Wenge strip in the 1006 supposedly really helps stabilize the neck with all the tension from the 6 strings.
That alone could be a deal breaker with the 36.

@FingerLickinGoood - Generally I use a little bass and low mid boost, maybe 1 o'clock.
Uou sound great on all the six strings. Do uou still play them?
Love your reviews. I would to ask if you can do Ibanez BTB review? best regards
@henry12350 - I like Rics, classic tone and look. They are well made US instruments, and yes, most likely I will not get to review one. They sell every bass they make, they don't seem to be in need of promotion.
So when are you reviewing a legendary wal bass?
at 5k is it really any better than a ritter? thier cora sires is great, i've played a 4 string cora and it was the best thing i've ever played.
killer tone, the pick ups are installed in serie o parallel way???
5k sounds fair for something built by master luthiers. Just because it has an Ibanez name doesn't make it inferior to other basses made to similar level of craftsmanship.
The value is up the player in the end, but i get the impression many players are brand conscious for the wrong reasons.
@TheRedSandwitch - Maybe. But don't ask me to play any Korn licks....
@Kuuuks - Modes are scales... learn arpeggios too. Learn them through the full range of the fingerboard.
hey ed! i've always wondered this. what do you think of Rickenbackers? i know that you prolly wont be able to get one to review given there are really only two kinds out there right now. still i respect what your opinion alot and would like to know what you think! thanks :D
Wow, nice video. what was that bossa nova bit at 5:48? loved it.
Thanks. It's not a song in particular, just a 2-5-3-6 vamp.
Alright:
Ed Friedland, you're always the best!
Nobody displays no matter the instrument the way that you do
You know what?
I'm on talkbass.com and you're almost an icon over there.
There used to be a thread about Ibanez GVB1006 revived with the introduction of the entry GVB36: a few remarkable enthusiast, myself included, were dreamin' about features of that bass...

Happy nu year Ed

Myung has tight string spacing on his Custom Musicman Bongo 6. I guess economy of movement is correct as John Pattitucci said in one of his old bass videos.
@thefid89 - Well, I keep mine bent, but I try not to put too much pressure on it, it can lead to problems.
@MopGunZ93 - Only if my editor assigns them, or Traben contacts me independently.
Interesting little fact here, the neck on this bass is thinner than some of the necks on certain Ibanez guitars, such as the Joe Satriani models aswell as the Paul Gilbert Fireman.

I only need to type "ed f" into the search engine. It immediately comes up with "ed friedland" - is that cool or what!
@BassGuitarMag You always so humble ED!
Hi Ed, is there any chance you could do a review on Ibanez' more affordable version, the GVB36?
The piece you ended the video on was beautiful. Are you a jazz musician at heart?
Hi Ed, i have a big important question, can the aguilar obp3 be installed in any bass? I'm getting my custom bass with EMG pickups, and i was wondering if i can add a aguilar preamp?
please answer back...
Greetings
Are you reviewing FX pedals again anytime soon, Ed?
@BassGuitarMag yeah its not the same, since Alain plays it much more faster, but i thought you were doing it slowly to show better the slap sound, couse the fast stuff sometimes looses the pure sound, couse of all the percusive sounds. @bustabo23 - Okay, I just checked out D-Code. It IS similar in that we both use a Dm voicing but that's all. Alain's tune is MUCH cooler!
@MrTheguyofbigbite - Good idea, very labor intensive. And then, there's the big question... who pays me to do it? I did do a pretty extensive review of all the different DR strings with sound samples.... it's up at the Bass Emporium website. Go to bassemporium (dot) com, look under resources, then newsletters, scroll down the page and you'll find it.
do u think u could review some basses by a company called Traben? :)
Just gotta practice that economy of motion thing man. I've learned how to do the double thumb technique on a Yamaha JM2, very tight string spacing, tons of people will say its not a slap bass. Perfect practice makes perfect.
@BassGuitarMag Man you can play that bass, what do I need to work on to be like you, lol....scales or modes?
Great looking, fantastic sounding bass. I have no doubt in my mind that the construction is top notch, but for 5 grand I think I'd rather have a bass custom built to MY specifications instead of someone elses.

will have to get a second job!
First off, Ed makes everything sound good. The thing with Ibanez -- the pr-amps are so specific, they all sound pretty much the same -- making the series with Bartolinis an amazing deal for around $600. (And they look nice too.) But $6000? For an Ibanez? That's absurd. Actually it's absurd for any electric bass.
your brain can not comprehend that ibanez is not charity organisation, but company with workers who needs salaries.....
stupid idiot
@silentboy85 only if they all wear matching sun glasses..
@BassGuitarMag Thanks Ed! But...could you expound just a little bit? :)
@riccaliolio - Don't use too much finger.
2:23 AMAZING.....
Nice Brazilian playin Ed !
first line sounds like g-code by alain caron doesn't it?
@BassGuitarMag Sweet man! Keep me posted :D
i had bought off the internet and it had a five star rating so i decided to buy it
Nice review, and nice bass. Signature models are always that expensive, IMHO it's nonsense. For 5k I could get a top notch luthier bass built on my very own specifics. Well, people are free to spend their money their way.
to spensice if i buy a sheap ibanez and i put bartolini pickups and preamp i will get the same sound
I could have a custom bass built to the exact same specs with just as high quality for half the price. It sounds great but the price is ludicrous.
than explain the buzz even thought i got the strings furthered from the neck and how fucking close the strings are
Ouch. 5k? Hmmm. Yea, that is up in Sadowsky 5/used Fodera/Zon 5 territory. Sounds nice on the chords though but still...
