- Check out this detailed graphics comparison between DiRT 4 versus DiRT Rally. Both games look great, each with it's own strength. Both games set to ULTRA settings.
My own analysis about both games graphics. Some say DiRT 4 looks downgraded compared to DiRT Rally. The thing is that DiRT 4 has a different art style. It's more focused on real life lighting and it's not as vibrant as DiRT Rally, which has increased color vibrance, contrast, the shadows are way darker, etc. The motion blur also is more heavily used in DiRT Rally compared to DiRT 4. Cars have more realistic reflections in DiRT 4. And the lighting of the level has a bigger impact on the car paint job. Dusk, cloudy, foggy, rainy. It reflects the sky alot better than in DiRT Rally. In DiRT Rally it's mostly just that vibrant red, blue,yellow paint, no matter the weather setting.
But the trees in DiRT 4 look worse. They look less smoother than in DiRT Rally and the atmospheric fog surrounding them is also missing mostly. The exhaust particle effect is also worse looking in DiRT 4.
Truth is that some levels look better in DiRT 4 due to superior more life like lighting, while some levels look nicer in DiRT Rally. - เกม

It’s doesn’t matter which has better graphics, cos when I’m flying through the courses in Dirt Rally there’s no time to notice anything other then the next turn

it really does matters because otherwise you where playing a less detailed game..... (dirt is not the only rally game though)
If you have a proper setup, a strong desire for simulation feel and lotsa FFB, go for Rally. But if you have a simple steering wheel like me and you're gonna play a game for fun and challenge, go for 4. Both of these games are really good and people around here are just being jerks for insulting these games. 4 is a bit arcadish-looking version of Rally but that doesn't make it a bad game. I still play 3 and love it. Don't take it serious now. Games are here for fun. Not to fight.

but 4 in terms of physics is more realistic than Rally. It's easier to start on the throttle but cars have weight under brakes, added mass just stabilized cars.
DR was harder but not more realistic.

I have XBox 360 controller, tried dirt4 and i can't say it is comfortable to turn on all tracks. Old Logitech MOMO Racing much is more convenience

Dirt 4 is not just rally and looked at environment than just car, while dirt rally is just pure rally and with VR its unbeatable experience. Compared to any other rally games out there who are not up to the mark as code masters these 2 games stands out. Good work!

Never played Dirt 4, but as far as I know the differences are mainly in amount of contents and physics.
Dirt Rally cars are prone to slide, even when in V1 physics where grip level is higher. Dirt 4 cars don't slide as much and seem easier to control (compare the BMW M3 clips).
Dirt Rally has less contents in terms of game mode, cars and courses
As a side note, Dirt Rally is in no way a full sim. I mean, 99.9% of my 300 hours on it is played with a controller...

I like D4 for the single player aspect, it just has more things to do.

2:53 to 3:10 Shading and shadowing is off in Dirt 4. You can see well lit interior behind the grill above rear bumper and through rear window. In Dirt Rally, it's much more natural.
In Dirt4, looks like sparks and smoke are passing right through car body @3:45
The actual car itself looks more vibrant in dirt 4 but everything else even the postprocessing effects and speed looks better in dirt rally
Got a Thrustmaster T150 Pro wheel for Christmas and me and my younger bros and sisters have been playing Dirt Rally on PC (Ryzen 1700 / RX480) ... one of the best parts about the game is that it is hard.
*Buys Both Game. Rally and Dirt 4. Now I have to say I love them both hahahahaha! People who kept saying which one is better doesnt have the other :P

I love dirt rally so much that I now bought it for my ps4 as well, now I can play it for simulation on my PC in my room with my g29, or go downstairs and play with the controller
In case anyone is still making the decision of which one to get, you should wait a little longer for the prices to go down as both games are not worth 40+ dollars so wait till there is a sale and then buy it, trust me it will feel a lot better paying a small price for a game you can’t decide on.

honestly I couldn't pick a favorite, in my opinion, two of the best games ever made!
The physics in DiRT rally look and feel better. In DiRT 4 the car has so much more grip. This and the combination of the slightly more saturated colour scheme means that DiRT 4 is basically an arcade version off DiRT rally. Maybe the developers had this in mind, maybe they wanted to create a slightly less punishing game. But im Rally all the way
Is it me or Rally looks more natural? D4 may have it done more eye-candy, but Rally looks closer to real life
You can modify Dirt 4 physics with RPFE Mod. It's here on TH-cam. The handling is much more comparable to Dirt Rally with it, I love it.
Now waiting for Dirt Rally 2 with even better graphics than 4 and same Rally feel
Dirt 4 is the "forza horizon" of rally games whereas dirt rally is the "forza Motorsport"... Although dirt rally is hard as shit though...
yet if you master the handling dirt rally is champion and reward you with huge satisfaction

Supercool video. Dirt Rally is on Instant Gaming for 6,17 Euro. You can then register it in steam. On steam it costs 2018 over 50 Euro. Both games look awesome. Great work from codemasters. But i find too, the sounds are slightly better in Dirt Rally.

Just did a back to back with the Alpine.. the interior looks much better in Dirt Rally! I think also the car sounds better and the snow particles look more realistic. I dont know why they would water down textures in a newer game..

Dirt rally is VR and is about 19bucks now on store. Bought it snd love it. Hard to learn from scratch though.
Hmmm, I like both of them, but somehow Dirt 4 looks too beautiful. Dirt rally looks more realistic I think. Dirt 4 looks like some photgrapher took real life picture, then played with the contrast and all that, wich looks great, but nicer than real life.

Funny, to me it's the opposite. Dirt 4 has more realistic colors, while Dirt Rally has some saturation and brightness that although beautiful, they're not realistic.

U All right about the few elements of Graphics in Dirt 4 are more fresh, but some elements i lke more in dirt Rally. They made really big difference with driving model in Dirt 4 becouse game priority is to give much fun and possibility to bit opponents (Computer). Sometimes im angry cuz of physics in Dirt Rally is a bit over hard... (example any touch of snow frame with not a high speed is ending with a swirl or crash. With normal street car i can drive my car better with these situations) I think that's why the made a bit easier system of driving. But of course i like Dirt Rally more. Dirt 4 i think is a little mistake. I know that its nice to drive easier but with comparsion to Dirt 2 or 3 is a bit impossible thing to drive so easy in Dirt 4 :)

I doubt that they changed anything. Sounds completely the same to me.
Check yours. Dirt 4 and Dirt Rally have the same underlying game engine and most of the same sound samples. Why should they sound much different?

The sound on Dirt Rally is magnificent.
I have both games and I often play one just after another... After 30 seconds of gameplay I notice much more difference in physics and how car behaves than visually. I like to play DiRT Rally more than DiRT 4, although noth games are awesome. I even prefer playing those over Project Cars 2, where I am still stuck with setting up and driving Formula 3 in career.
Dirt 4's lighting looks so good. The sunlight looks softer and colors look more accurate.
DIRT 4 is like a remastered of DIRT rally :)

What game should I get? I am very experienced with arcade racers and want to move to sim, I have played sim games like forza Motorsport 6 and loved it. I don’t have a steering wheel, would dirt 4 be a better choice for me? I want a game that feels realistic but is fun at the same time. I also like how dirt rally is cheaper.

Graphics are very similar, what changes is the gameplay.
Dirt 4 is for fun when Dirt Rally is for sim.
You can see it when seeing how the player rocks it when on dirt 4 and struggles as hell when on dirt rally (0:14 Vs. 0:34 or 10:25 Vs. 10:40).
I was about to sell my Dirt Rally, think I’ll keep it now.

For some reason the trees seem inferior on Dirt 4, just noticed because the shadows they produce are really crappy also. Also Dirt 4 is missing night shadows.

I think there is no clear winner here. Textures, shadows and reflections look way more detailed on Dirt4 but some backgrounds look better on Dirt Rally because there is some haze, more of a filmic warm color palette and the trees in the snow around 6:45 look totally generic against what Dirt Rally has. Actually what I find more interesting is how equal these games sound. There doesn't seem to be any difference at all.

I don't know about you but both Dirt 4 and Rally look amazing at certain times and a bit naff at others. I remember being wowed at the graphics in one rally, then absolutely disappointed in another.

Yea shortly after this comment I got DiRT Rally. I don't regret it at all, it's a ton of fun and a challenge. I tried 4 and Rally felt more sim than 4 from my experience.

Having played both they are good games however if you want more of a sim experience and what I imagine would be the closest to driving a rally car Dirt Rally is spot on. If you so much as sneeze while playing Dirt Rally you’ll end up in a Ditch. Dirt 4 will appear to a bigger audience as it’s much easier to play.
Dirt Rally is also a swear simulator lol. I like both. Why pick one or the other when you can have them both. Especially now you could pick up both for less than 40 USD combined.
I also wanted to add that Dirt Rally supports VR where as Dirt 4 does not.

I know Dirt Rally is a better Sim, but only works, if we have a wheel. Dirt 4 is much more fun, for players who only have controllers, specially the ones who still play "old school" buttons, like me!!
They are both so great that i will keep both, even in the future!!

Ok, lets get this straight, both games look good but dirt 4 has higher tech and its more fun because its more relaxing but I also like dirt rally because its still relaxing but more intense. but I think I might go with dirt 4 because of the better physics and the terrain looks a bit more realistic and newer tech like I said.

Dirt rally better and more realistic visuals, better physics on gravel better overall needs a little color corection, dirt4 have better lighting. Also in dirt Rally you can tune the suspension not to be so wably.
You can do the same in dirt 4.

For playing on keyboard dirt 4 is better and also visuals are great. But legendary hill track is missing on dirt 4.
Dirt 4 has better textures and visuals, but I have to admit that Dirt rally has some fine and stylish af cars P.S: does Dirt 4 has an Impreza 2005 I speak of the " hawkeye " version of the car ? so far I've only seen the 2001 edition or the "bugeye" version, the Hawkeye is Beautiful !

They are visually identical both are on CodeMaster's "Ego" engine with identical texture resolution and weather.. Buy either, but yes they are the best rally games ever made.. I think 4 is just Rally with some textures changes and mechanics added and moved..

Whats the main difference between the games? why did the developer make basically 2 games that are very similar?
The main difference is the content and driving mechanics a bit. Dirt Rally is more like the original Dirt, meaning trying to replicates pure rally racing in a more focused fashion with point-to-point races where the clock, not other cars on the road, is your main opponent. Dirt 4, on the other hand, is more akin to Dirt 2-3: you have a variety off road events that go beyond rally with rally, 4x4s, and full car grid race events, etc.

What car is that in the beginning?
The one thing I don't like about DiRT Rally is that it has this very slight motion blur which hinders the graphical appearance of the game. Everything else about it is superb.
Turn the shaders to low, fixes it.

Dirt Rally for color pallette/tint. Dirt4 for lighting effects. Dirt 4 is way too bright and 'warm'.
The SOUND is way better in Dirt Rally.

I play DiRT4 because I'm not very good at racing games and I use a controller and not an actual wheel which is what I see people saying is that Dirt rally should be played with a steering wheel
