  • As we get older we become conscious of money in a new way. Feeling like a millionaire in retirement is often a distant reality or dream. It is scary to watch our savings diminish and often insecurity and fear set in.
In this video, I talk about how luxury (and feeling like a millionaire) can be a state of mind. There are many ways to feel pampered and luxurious by adding some simple things to our life.
What small things to you do that makes you feel like a millionaire? Do you have any tricks or attitude adjustments that create luxury in your life?

Being around water. Going to a library and checking out half a dozen books on whatever looks interesting. Putting my folding bike in the car and taking it to a trail in the everglades. Rowing a $20 DIY inflatable rowboat. Finding a way to cook a low-cost plain food item and make it into something special. being outside but under a roof in the rain and having coffee while listening and watching it. Looking at my cupboard and seeing it full. Having an old reliable car that is paid off and not having a lot of monthly expenses or debts and no extra drama. Being grateful for having recovered from a long illness and being aware of all the treasures I have.

Nothing makes me feel like a millionaire more than getting dressed, doing my hair and makeup (instead of slouching around) and also having a clean house. If the house is clean, and I feel pretty - that's all it takes for me for me to feel like the upper crust, whether I am or not.

I enjoyed this. I celebrate myself and attend worship on Sundays. Its the first day of the week so I take personal time before church and do my hair, facial and sometimes a pedicure. Then, I dress up and go and thank our Lord with lots of other people. I dont wear "whatever" to church.

Hi Margaret. I agree so much with the content of this you tube session. I live a stone's throw away from a canal and we have 30 degree weather at the moment here in the UK. I decided to buy a small bottle of wine and put this in my back pack together with a wine glass and set off cycling along the canal path. I found a lovely big shady tree opposite a canal lock and sat down. It was out in the countryside with only the chattering of the birds and the "phut phut" sound of the odd canal barge. As I watched the barge go gracefully down in the lock with little whisps of smoke coming from its chimney against a blue blue sky, it seemed sheer heaven. Just sitting there with the lightest of cool breezes.

omgosh, what a nice idea .. I live in a small hamlet just minutes from the city. Our little town lines a lake with a park ... everyone in our small town is a short walk from the lake. I'm going to borrow your idea today and pack something yummy and fizzy into a pack and take my bike to the park, get comfy with my drink - people watch, bird watch and small plane watch (many homes on the lake have personal water planes taking off and landing on a nice day). I really need to take in that scenery more, especially when it's so close ;) Blessed day to you!

@@stopsthismadness9924 I have that same worry, but here in USA, most people when they retire, they get social security but it depends how much you contributed while working. But it's not enough to retire. But after retirement, you can still work part-time. I did not work much but am lucky coz I get my husband's retirement money for life, which is my lifetime. But still worry but I realize that worrying too much will stop you from enjoying life. So in your case, just enjoy the now and don't worry too much of the future coz we don't know what the future brings on all of us. Of course, you have to stay on budget and enjoy life.😊

Simplicity. 22 years ago, when I was 50, I lost my first husband to cancer. I wrote one word on sheets of paper and hung them around the house. Simplicity. That is what I wanted for the rest of my life. Oh my. I’ve end up with much more than I had ever had. I re-married and gained a whole new family and life (we have 5 kids and their spouses, and 13 grandkids). But we built a dream home in the country and it is the simple pleasures that bring the greatest joys.
Thanks, Margaret, for pointing out the simple pleasures that truly make me feel so rich. Example: we have 130 acres with a mile of creek front in the middle of a national forest. Do you know it’s one tiny little garden spot that i my favorite. I sit down there and day dream of being a minimalist. = )

Hi Margaret, greetings from Kansas City to everyone!! I enjoy many of the small luxuries you mentioned, and one thing I often do to enhance my home environment, is to turn TH-cam on to a full burning fireplace-one with all the crackles and pops of real wood burning. I find gazing into the fire to be extremely relaxing-even on hot summer days. In addition, I try and soak in the tub a couple times a week. Sometimes, I use bubble bath or bath bombs', and sometimes I'll play some spa music on my phone while I soak. I also invested in a large, cotton spa towel, and I have a soft, long robe and slippers. These feel very sensuous against the skin after I've bathed. At bedtime, I often play relaxation/meditation/reduce anxiety music on my phone, using the plethora of available channels on TH-cam. Last night, I listened to a soft rain for several hours as I drifted off-it was yummy. Sending my best wishes to all!

Just listen to if for a short time each day, maybe there is a station near you that plays classical music. We have KUSC here in California and I would listen only in my car. Or you can get it on the internet. Over the years I learned to love it and learned a lot too! Few if any composers like that these days.

Tea time is such a wonderful indulgence, and, it can be made as luxurious as you like (or not). It doesn't really cost much to make it seem, "luxurious". I've always admired furs, but, I'd never wear real ones; now, they make faux fur look and feel so soft. I like anything with a touch of that. I'm pretty simple, actually. This was a great topic..thank you! Take good care; see you soon. 🙂

I make like a simple caftan top that can be used over a swimsuit in summer or worn with a belt They look so nice and very simple as they are already hemmed a simple slit for the head can be hemmed by hand or made more elaborate with beading around it .

I understand that spending money on things isn’t all that great. Other things like just walking in the mornings will give a feeling of happiness. But it is also good to spend some savings on yourself because when you die, the savings is not going with you. But it is also important not to go through all of your savings in case you need it to continue enjoying life. So that’s the big question. How long will I live and how to budget savings for the rest of my life? Maybe it’s a good idea to spend a little, continue to save a little. At the end, end up with a little savings for a cherished charity. But I definitely appreciate the importance of finding luxury and happiness in nature, tea /coffee, smiles, etc.

This is my first time to watch your video. Lovely to see a channel with so many positive people and positive thoughts. I have been retired for sometime and have enjoyed living simply in a few different countries; Panama, Indonesia , Argentina, USA, and currently living in Mexico. My luxury is waking up and having the pleasure of a leisure lifestyle. I typically have coffee on our veranda while watching hummingbirds, y birds. Daily I cut hibiscus flowers and place them in tiny vases on our kitchen and bathroom counters. I live with open windows y fresh air year round. We shop for vegetables at local street markets. Before Covid, I enjoyed dance classes. and socializing with other dancing doll retirees. Now I stretch on our mirador while watching cloud formations. I plan to add candles , tea time, and a crystal water glass. Thank you for your post.

Stepping out of a hot shower/bath and drying myself with a clean fluffy white towel. Sleeping on freshly ironed white bed linen (must be cotton). I also feel, that as we embrace getting older, many women are actually choosing to work into their 70's. I have several friends who both work full time and are 72, and 74. They are vibrant, healthy, and are single women. If I ask them if they consider working maybe three days a week or retiring, they look horrified. They are both financially more than able to retire, but simply wouldn't want to. I'm 52, and I can also (God willing) see myself working into my 70's. Its interesting because I was also talking to a male work colleague of mine, a psychiatrist. He said 'oh no, I'll never retire, in my country, where I grew up, we don't do that'. Interesting perspectives I feel from both sexes on value of working past retirement age, that has nothing to do with money.

I only use a small amount at the end of my shower so it lasts longer but the smell and feel is outstanding. Also I invested in a silk pillow, if you hand wash it in cold water, it lasts for a few years. All these make me feel like a million :-)

Great video! As you say there are lots of ways to feel like a “millionaire in life” rather than a monitory millionaire. Simple things like going on a gorgeous walk, being in nature and listening to bird song, observing the change of the seasons and the joy each of these changes bring and the different colours and scents of nature. Appreciating the time we now have in retirement to take in all these wonderful things around us. Being able to do what we want when we want ( within reason ) and being free to just be spontaneous. I have been retired for 11months now and it is a work in progress to adapt for me, to adapt and appreciate the gift of retirement - if it’s a choice you’ve been able to make and it hasn’t been forced upon you. I initially was very concerned about money and I still have the odd anxious moment when I worry if it will be a problem in the future, but then it’s amazing what you can actually live on when you discard all the unnecessary purchases. I decided to take the risk and haven’t regretted it and feel blessed to be more relaxed. Thanks Margaret for this video 👍

I use a body brush in the shower to help circulation and use Dove products I buy a Christmas present of the toilet bag with 5 products in each Christmas and it,s so nice but not expensive.
