  • After a lot of blood, sweat and tears we have finally finished our restoration of the Armourgeddon LEE! Over the last few months our team has been working their socks off trying to get the old girl back to her former glory. She will be taking pride of place in our museum over the winter next to the rest of the Armourgeddon collection.
    Thank you everyone for the support!

Considering that the Hummer has a belly like Charmin toilet paper, and the Abrams and Bradley are just above Silly Putty, maybe some old cast steel is right on the money. A lovely restoration indeed, I I think you did a great job to put it back on the road! But I have two questions for you: the Grant/Lee had the spoked wheels as well the early Shermans, and the " full" wheels was only installed on the later variants of the Shermans, especially after the advance in South Italy and thereby retrofitted on the earlier versions! Is it because it is very difficult to find the spoked wheels? The other question are the padded tracks very worn out, do you intend to replace it?

    • @matthewwadwell6100
      @matthewwadwell6100 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'Day Paolo Viti,
      I've just watched this episode and the start of episode 1, and he states that they got the Lee from Australia.
      Australia didn't get the Lee's until late in the war (the US and Britain had higher priorities - which is why Australia started development of the Sentinel) - so it is very likely that the second-hand Lee's that Australia got were retrofitted with the full wheels.
      And regarding the tracks, he states at the start of the video that the only thing that they are waiting for is a new set of tracks.....
      Later, Matt

    • @paoloviti6156
      @paoloviti6156 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Wadwell thanks for replying! Now I understand why the Lee was retrofitted with the late "full" wheels as it came to Australia in 1944 quite worn out so it had to be overhauled. A last question: the coming new tracks are "rigenerated" meaning that there is a specialized company that cleans off the rust (like sandblasting? ) and install new rubber pads?

      I want to see the promised seven man crew with hatches down driving. :-)
      I hope you have seven people who fit the bill for a tanker: Short and fit or it will be just silly.
      I once had the opportunity to enter the crew compartment of a modern Swedish infantry support/transport vehicle (so not an actual tank) and I am not tall, but I am wide, so I barely got through the hatch in a thin summer jacket and T-shirt, much less combat gear, and I quickly forgot about trying out any other station then the one below the hatch, it was claustrophobic.
      The tank is more cramped.

    How does one get and keep operational artillery pieces in the UK? You would have thought one of the requirements for import would have been to "de-mil" the guns?

      whether its to a battery of lawyers or in fees and taxes.. as we know even in the USA all the "illegal" items are really just a matter of filing paperwork and getting fees paid. i think the only thing off the table are WMDS. the UK is supposed to be gun free for the most part especially military style repeaters.. yet the ex-host of "Top Gear" UK Jeremy Clarkson owns an AK-47..

    Do you plan on replacing the missing commanders .30 cal MG turret that sat on top of the 37mm turret? Also, I noticed some loose bolts in the clutch compartment that look like the nuts are almost off.

      the cupola was found to be a bad idea and that hatch was a retrofit
      the cupola had two MAJOR issues
      1 it filled with fumes form the gun and made the commander nauseous
      2 if it was hit by an HV round at the ring it came off taking the top of the commander with it
      this tank probably had the retrofit done when it was sent to Australia, as the British Grant ALSO had no Cupola

    • @krispybacon9285

      added velocity and range to the round.. this works for the most part in fire arms as well.
      thats why you see very few "shorty" sniper rifles ( usually if they are shortened, its to add a suppressor without adding length. best used in urban areas)

    It's like a Grant, but with a Lee turret.

    • @imagifyer

      its because its an Ex-Australian M3, and the Australian army disliked the little MG turret on top of the lee, so they removed them and replaced them with Grant type hatches

      imagifyer if my memory serves me correct the MG turret was very cramped with limited visibility from inside. I suspect,, but I might be wrong as I don't know, that the MG turret had to be cranked around as it might be quite heavy but it would be cumbersome and slow, just guessing....

      @@paoloviti6156 that was part of it, too hard to use for little to no benefit. Also it added to the height of an already tall vehicle, which cause problems with rail transport as it risked the tank being too tall to fit under bridges or in tunnels. The M3 actually couldn't be transported by rail to certain parts of Australia because it wouldn't fit in the rail tunnels

      imagifyer thanks for the info! I didn't realize that the MG turret was next to useless and of course it was so tall, but I didn't know that there was danger hitting the electric wires or passing under the bridges. I think that the M 4 Lee or Grant had the dubious distinction of being the tallest tank of the 2nd WW!
