- Twenty years ago, the teenage Superman drama Smallville made its debut on the now-defunct WB network, launching a remarkable run that, despite its firm "no tights, no flights" edict, managed to fly further than any on-screen incarnation of the Man of Steel before or since. A 10-season run, in fact.
After all, those 217 episodes did much more than define the Superman mythos for an entire generation who grew up alongside Tom Welling's Clark Kent, Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor, and Kristen Kreuk's Lana Lang. Indeed, Smallville's reimagining of the classic super-hero paradigm as a conflicted teen drama was a stroke of genius that not only gave renewed currency to the Superman legend but also set the stage for an entire multiverse of live-action DC Comics shows that continue to spread across both network and streaming television to this day, from the Arrowverse to the HBO Max DC shows and beyond.
It all started with a proposed young Bruce Wayne series, but when executives on the Warner Bros. feature film side decided that they didn't want any competition for the Batman reboot they were developing, young Bruce transformed into young Clark Kent. Soon the writing/producing team of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were drafted by Warner Bros. Television's Peter Roth to work on the proposed series, which would eventually evolve into Smallville. And hence a legend was born.
Yes, without Smallville, there would likely be no Arrow, no Flash, no Superman & Lois, Titans, or Doom Patrol. So let's look back at the birth of Smallville two decades ago, how it managed to endure for 10 years, and the super legacy that the show left behind.

@@enochduah3066 doesn’t really matter since in most adaptions of Superman, he becomes Superman at around age 25-28. Smallville ended when Clark was 24. He actually became Superman faster than usual

More than just how he became Superman, Smallville showed why Clark Kent would want to be Superman and specifically why he chose to do it the way he did (reporter with glasses, public hero with the uniform, etc)
Smallville had the best soundtracks and ending music scenes. Loved the rascall flatts ending when clark raced flash
What about Level 33.1, when they first showed it? That was epic!
Season 4 had some unforgettable music moments for me. Pain by Jimmy Eat World, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Untitled by Simple Plan. And then Season 5, with the whole Metropolis Mix.

Arrow premiered the following year after Smallville's end, it was developed years before so yeah the current Superhero TV craze can be traced to Smallville.

Actually the Arrow show was planned during season 6/7 of Smallville and they wanted Justin Hartley from Smallville to be Oliver/Arrow but he rejected the offer

thats the problem, If arrow was made as a spinoff of Arrowverse, than by now we would have a much better DC tv universe than the one we call Arrowverse. Arrowverse is a social disease to our hearts.

Smallville: 10 Years! Best Lex ever! Tom is the only true inheritor to the role! Careers were made! Audiences would rather watch this than Superman Returns or Man of Steel! Special FX that hold up better than modern ones!

@@katabellioniguess Hulk has nothing to do with Blade my guy. The Blade movies success made it possible for the X men franchise to go off and that success then gave the MCU movies the green light to start their run. All Smallville did was influence the DC side of tv shows.
MCU shows are possible because of the MCU film franchises success which flows back to Blade, not Smallville. To me Smallville is still the best superhero tv show ever made but let's not pretend it's responsible for the others sides MCU shows out today.

Smallville Truly was an iconic series that so many of this great DC heroes to life and helped them branch out with their own shows within the Arrowverse. Smallville had perhaps the best versions of these heroes such as Superman, Green Arrow and Supergirl. It also had an incredible amount of heart/soul that made it compelling all the way through.
John Schneider and Annette O’Toole are such a great pairing as Jonathan and Martha Kent.

The funny thing is, at that time, Smallville was tremendously better, creatively, than anything they were doing with WB superhero movies.

Gough and Millar would've handled the Arrowverse way better than Kreisberg and Berlanti
Yes, they certainly would have. They most certainly would have more care in adapting the characters more faithfully from source material. Plus it would have WAY less politics or none at all.

@@thomaspanditfan2435 Berlanti certainly made great stuff. It’s just not Comic accurate stuff. Whereas Smallville took the comic lore and expanded upon it, the Arrowverse creates its own lore

The comment the creators made toward the end about not thinking the show would survive if it were made today almost sounds like they're admitting that the studio doesn't let creators make what they want to. They force them to jam everything with clunky political references/messages, to do only what the higher ups want.
That's always been part of my arguments as to why S.V. was great. It did in 1 show what 8 t.v. shows are trying to do and with less copyright allowances on characters too..

Smallville is great but creating a new show out of that established universe is kinda troubled. You'll have to retcon everything or everyone to the events/stories of that show. A new shared universe, the Arrowverse, isn't really that bad; besides they visited the 'Smallville' universe later on.

But Arrow probably wouldnt have happened if it wasnt for Smallvile, and since Crisis on Infinite Earths happened wihtin the "Arrowverse" you could technically argue Smallville is part of that universe now, so its kind of a chicken and the egg thing with the terminology of whether it should be Arrowverse or Smallvilleverse
The Isobel story was interesting. But all of that lore just went out the window when Jason & Genevieve died and the fortress crystal was formed. Not so sure if it just served its purpose or if Al & Miles and the powers at be decided to go in a different direction.

If you took Stephen Ameil and Arrow and discarded CW, the script, all the other cast and made a complete Arrow reboot movie or Daredevil style tv show you'd have a winner. Netflix needs to make that.

TO the editor you showed ending of buffy series yet that was not the end they were talking about. The Buffy ended on season 5 on the WB yet was picked up by UPN for 2 more seasons which was the clip shown. smallville was on in 2001 on WB with buffy on UPN till 2003.

Arrow was originally meant to be the arrow from smallville sooo 🤷
Smallville ended in May 2011... Arrow launched in October 2012....it wasn't even an 18 month gap. The reason they went with Oliver queen and arrow was due to the characters popularity on Smallville. They chose to reboot because Justin Hartley wasn't available for the show, was alittle on the expensive side, and it allowed them to introduce characters cleanly without former Smallville actors in the darker and grittier arrow universe. However without Smallville there's no Arrow.
