Jay d, I appreciate your comments. Carmol was my Producer for the songs I recorded for Fred Foster and Monument Records in the late 70's....mostly, he was one of the best friends I ever had. He believed in me with all his heart, and he was personally responsible for getting me signed to Monument as a singer/songwriter. I wrote the song you've referred to, "Holding Her, but Loving You". Carmol loved it, and delivered it like no one else could. I'd give just about anything to have a copy of that demo now. I was there when he cut it. We were both infuriated when he made the unfortunate mistake of letting one of his "good friends" hear it shortly after the session. Next thing we knew, it had been recorded, only slightly, cleverly "altered"; same title, same song, and became a number one record for Earl Thomas Conley. But that hit belonged to Carmol Taylor, and to the young songwriter he tried sincerely to help. I'll never forget his great kindness and love for people, and his big, big talent as a singer and very successful songwriter. God bless the many, many wonderful memories and my time spent in his care and influence..
I knew Carmol and hung out at his Nashville and used to watch and listen when he picked up that guitar and just picked and grinned. He was my top musical country hero. I went to his funeral and don't think I ever really got over his death. I was a country DJ. I have stored somewhere, a demo he cut, he was pretty much feeling no pain, and even with one slightly slurred word in the vocal, it was one of the most beautifully produced and recorded songs I'd heard. It was as I say a publishers demo never meant for release. It was called, Holding her, but loving you. He was the best.
