The most realistic part about this scene is that soldier boy disowns Homelander because he sees how he is in the inside: a needy crybaby that starves for peoples attention. Due to soldier boys upbringing, he clearly hates the idea of "a real man" like him being related to someone like homelander and because such moment also mirrors the same moments soldier boy had with his own father when he desperately attempted to win his approval. He saw the same weakness in homelander and when he says "I AM YOU", you can see soldier boys pain in his eyes. Not just because he is related to a manchild but also because that manchild has become a permanent reminder that he wasnt "a real man" like he always thought he was.

That's crazy how Homelander's most emotionally vulnerable instance was simultaneously both his most narcissistic, manipulative self and Soldier Boy's point of no-return for atonement. Homelander practically used Ryan as an emotional human shield to make the latter's grandfather plead for HIS cause (not he and Ryan's cause) , while by crossing that line Soldier Boy became the absolute monster his late father was seeing in him and has no qualm harming and attempting to the life an innocent child-- his own blood.

What the actual fuck? There was no 'manipulation' on Homelander's part. That was genuine emotion coming from him, with 0 ulterior motives. And 'using' Ryan? That isn't at all what he was doing. He gave his grandson an opportunity meet his grandfather, and if things really had worked out, it could have been a truly wholesome gathering, which Homelander truly felt from the bottom of his heart. Soldier Boy was the absolute monster, lacking a shred of emotion.

Ryan is the only thing in the world that made Homelander be good. I got a feeling he will sacrifice himself to protect Ryan and whoever kills him will be the final boss of the series(instead of his BlackNoir clone, like in comics).
Or maybe that final boss kills Ryan and Homelander fully loses his shit, fights him no mercy, and Butcher finishes whoever barely survives that fight.

Genuine shock. Homelander tried his absolute hardest to be emotionally vulnerable and bond with his father for his son’s sake, and the irony is Soldier Boy is even crazier than Homelander ever was. Vought deserves to burn for what they did to these men.
What I don't understand is why Butcher has this sudden need to save the boy (even if he is the b*st*rd child of his wife). Also, at the worst, the blast from Soldier Boy likely wouldn't have killed Ryan, but just taken away all his powers (just like Homelander). Why not go ahead and just let that happen? Why screw up the whole plan and likely their only shot at taking out Homelander once and for all?
Because Butcher did not expect Ryan to be there, and he promised Becca at her death that he would try to protect him.

Soldier boy is the absolute of what a soldier is …every day is war to him and when you at war thinking about your family and not the battlefield can get you killed that’s why he sees homelander as weak ..he craves attention as soldier boy craves combat ..he would have had more respect for homelander if he had come prepared to fight but homelander tried to tug as soldier boys heart and it back fired

Solider Boys shield was able to repel Homelanders laser vision. So there is a Metal able to defeat Homelander. I wonder if Soldier Boy just agreed if that would've filled the bottomless gaping pit of insecurity that is Homelander's soul and he would've been a good little hero from there on out.
This scene was superb from both ackles and starr. I cant imagine a version that could make it better. Slight hesitation when he brings out ryan makes you wonder if he'll flip sides. But then he goes into that dialogue that confims hes still with butcher. looks like hes coming back next season. I wonder if he finally goes with homelander after this betrayal of butcher. Butcher could have finally had homelander here.

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the dominating motive, even though Butcher says he kept a promise.
Butcher wants nothing to do with Ryan. Multiple scenes made that very clear. He could not be happier with Ryan living the rest of his days trouble free and out of his life.
But after his experience of reliving his greatest mistake in that forest, I think he just found…his line.
Lol Butcher was ok with Soldier Boy blowing up next to Ryan, but then when Soldier Boy pushed Ryan, he decided it wasn't ok. I mean, yeah, he did tell Ryan to get out of the building, implying that he cares about him, but he clearly saw that Ryan wasn't moving so shouldn't he have just grabbed Ryan and left the building then? Yes. Yes, he should've IF he really cared about him however instead, he just kept holding Homelander and was going to allow Soldier Boy to blow up with Ryan next to them.
This makes Butcher's promise to Rebecca meaningless. When he hurt Ryan, that was a mistake you could tell, but here? Here, Bucther didn't care that Soldier Boy was gonna blow up next to Ryan. He cared a bit, but not enough to get Ryan out of harms way. Or maybe he was thinking, you know what? It's good if Soldier Boy blows up next to Ryan. He won't die, and he will lose his powers, so win win? Lol, but I doubt Butcher was thinking that.

What a tragic character. Created by a scientist who wanted to exploit him. He didn't have a mother or a father. Forced into experiments, that traumatized him. Isolated in a room, alone and afraid. Indoctrinated, and turned into a corporate illusion for profit. He, has never experienced a sincere romantic or platonic relationship in his entire life. This is caused by his own villainy, as he is too damaged to ever develop true friendships. Homelander was a good man at the start of his Vought journey. His inability to control a hostage situation in the finale of Diabolical was the catalyst of his villainy.
