This effect is basically an UV unwrap of a Sphere. So it's mostly used with other effects that generate a sphere. It can generate seamless texture for spherical objects like planets and balls.

I did not get it what it might be used for So I will try to experiment)
If you apply it to a full hd comp with a solid inside it will make from Rect to circle. You can animate things inside the comp.
