    I couldn't get this to work for the life of me; mostly because I'm completely new to After Effects, but I figured out what you missed to point out to make this work. If you look at time code 0:22 in the checked boxes you have the "For Comp Layer: Collapse Transformations; for vector layer: Continuously rasterize" box checked. The icon looks like a star burst. You have to have that box checked to make this effect work at all. I played around for nearly 2 hours trying to figure out what I was missing and then dissected your exact settings from visual keys and noticed this. AGAIN, I'm a complete novice so missing this one key aspect really threw me for a loop. Thanks for showing me the amazingness of this tool :) Will be stopping by often!

    Whenever I write expressions like this in AE (although this one, and “.speed” were both completely new to me, so cheers for that) I’ve always declared a variable at the beginning, then changed the value inside the if/then statement and called the variable at the end. Aside from learning a bunch of stuff about the Echo effect, it made me realize I was making things hard on myself and writing 2 extra lines every time.

      @@JakeInMotion I've added three Effect Controls: a "Shutter Angle" angle control, a "Samples" slider, and a "Native Shutter Angle" checkbox that overrides the shutter angle control with the comp's settings. Then I have 4 expressions:
      On the shutter angle:
      if(effect("Native Shutter Angle")("Checkbox")==1)
      {
      thisComp.shutterAngle
      }else{ value}
      On the Samples:
      clamp(Math.ceil(value),2,128)
      On Echo Time:
      fr = thisComp.frameDuration;
      SA = -(360/effect("Shutter Angle")("Angle"));
      smp = effect("Samples")("Slider")-1;
      fr/(SA*smp)
      On Number of Echoes:
      effect("Samples")("Slider")-1
      I could send the FFX if you're on the MDA/Mograph.com slack, but this should pretty much do it :)

    • @paulvansommeren
      @paulvansommeren 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried making the samples based on the velocity of the layer, but haven't been able to get consistently good results across the boards. Would give a really nice performance boost though, since Echo can get pretty heavy quickly.

    Does anyone know how to make the trace of the "echo" effect not disappear during the entire composition and remain static after the appearance? (I need to recreate an effect similar to the one in the Solitaire card game in windows, probably as many of you know it, there falling cards leave a trace after winning the game). I tried to increase the number of echoes, but this leads to the fact that they are always striving for the "emitter" and dissapear then. In addition, a large number of echoes reduces the performance of the program, without visually increasing echoes after a certain threshold.
    P.S. I came up with the idea of precomposing and using time remapping on compositions where there is an echo. The method is not quite suitable, because the echoes do not appear from the current position of the layer, but from its starting position, so the ladder of echoes is constantly moving, and they must appear once from under the emitter and remain in place. But the precompose at least helped solve the problem of their disappearance after some time.

    • @JakeInMotion
      @JakeInMotion  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely understand your frustrations. I think a big part of the problem is that AE has been around for so long, and there is nothing out there to compete with it. If another piece of software is able to really challenge what AE has to offer and do it in a better or more intuitive way, big changes will happen at Adobe.
